- Romain Gary was born on May 8, 1914 in Vilna, Russian Empire [now Vilnius, Lithuania]. He was a writer and actor, known for Le Jour le plus long (1962), Kill (1971) and Les oiseaux vont mourir au Pérou (1968). He was married to Jean Seberg and Lesley Blanch. He died on December 2, 1980 in Paris, France.

- His 1958 novel "Lady L" was said to have been inspired by his wife, Lesley Blanch. In it, a worldly grand dame works the social circuit, telling captivating stories along the way. Sophia Loren starred in the film made from the book, Lady L (1965).
- He was the illegitimate son of a famous Russian actor of the silent era, Ivan Mosjoukine. His book, "Promise At Dawn", is an account of his childhood and early manhood, and of the influence of his lively Polish mother. It was the basis of a 1971 film directed by Jules Dassin, and three young actors played Gary at different ages - Didier Haudepin had the most screen time of the three.
