In her feature film directorial debut Seeds, Kaniehtiio Horn tackles what happens when social media influencing and Indigenous identity collide through a rather violent lens. It’s a perspective we haven’t really seen in the genre, or in cinema at large, so to say it’s a crucial piece of genre cinema is an understatement. Ahead of the film’s release on VOD this September, we have a new trailer for the film below!
But first, read the film’s full synopsis:
Ziggy, a social media influencer, is hired to promote a seemingly eco-friendly campaign celebrating “nature.” However, she soon uncovers a dark corporate conspiracy to exploit Indigenous knowledge, erase cultural practices, and patent ancient seeds for profit. Realizing the campaign is a sham, Ziggy finds herself hunted by corporate forces. To protect her heritage, Ziggy must reconnect with her Mohawk community, language, and ancestral lands. She rediscovers her strength,...

Magnolia Pictures will be giving the post-apocalyptic thriller 40 Acres, starring Danielle Deadwyler of The Woman in the Yard and Carry-On, a theatrical release on July 2nd – and in anticipation of that release, we’re proud to share an Exclusive clip from the movie! You can check it out in the embed above.
40 Acres marks the feature directorial debut of R.T. Thorne, who also wrote the screenplay with Glenn Taylor from a story by Lora Campbell. The film has the following synopsis: After a plague eradicates all animal life, famine spreads across the globe leaving society at war and in ruins, but the Freemans are surviving — even thriving — on their ancestral farm so long as they dispatch the occasional raiding party. But what good is surviving the end of the world if it means snuffing out your own humanity? Former soldier Hailey made that choice years ago, believing that isolation was...

Reservation Dogs star Kaniehtiio Horn plays a cat-and-mouse game with a home intruder looking to steal her family’s spiritual legacy in the trailer for Seeds, which dropped on Friday.
The release of the teaser comes as Horn’s directorial debut has its world premiere Friday at the Toronto Film Festival. “War has been declared and do you know what my people did to our enemies during wartime?” Horn, who plays Ziggy, a young Kanienkehaka (Mohawk) woman, says at one point in the trailer while brandishing a rifle on her reservation and ancestral lands to protect her aunt’s cache of seeds from a menacing thief named Bondsman.
Eventually, the seeds hold a totemic power as they come to represent Ziggy’s family’s indigenous legacy, and she discovers her inner warrior to hold on to them. The tense thriller with comic overtones marks Horn’s first effort in the...

Indigenous horror has become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly in Canada where efforts are being made to seek out, fund, and promote First Nation stories (see also: Slash/Back and the late Jeff Barnaby’s work like Blood Quantum and Rhymes for Young Ghouls).
With Seeds, we can add Kaniehtiio Horn’s name to the list. The multi-hyphenate is known for her acting work on series like Letterkenny and Reservation Dogs, but for her first feature, Horn takes up writing, directing and starring duties to tell the personal story of a Mohawk woman thrown into battle with a corrupt corporation.
Ziggy (Horn) is a late-twenty something living in Toronto. She’s an ambitious woman – hustling to carve out a spot as a social media influencer with cute videos of her and her cat Potato in between making a living as a food delivery woman.

Horn has taken the lead in their own film, along with writing, directing and executive producing it. They have added legendary Indigenous actor Graham Greene, character actor Patrick Garrow, Reservation Dogs' Dallas Goldtooth, Meegwun Fairbrother (Burden of Truth) and Dylan Cook (Letterkenny). Warning: Major Spoilers For Fubar Season 1 Below!Fubar season 1 ends on a suitably dramatic note for Arnold Schwarzenegger's Luke and his family, but it still left some unanswered questions behind. The first season of Netflix's spy comedy saw Luke learn his daughter Emma (Monica Barbaro) was secretly a CIA agent too, so the two are forced to work together and deal with the stresses of the job and the toll it takes on their personal lives. Fubar's ending followed Luke as he tried to win back ex-wife Tally (Fabiana Udenio) as she was about to get remarried - only for the church to be invaded by gunmen.
In the aftermath, Luke and Emma drive their family to safety, only to learn their secret identities have been exposed, meaning every terrorist or criminal they've ever crossed with be coming for revenge. This is a promising setup for Fubar...

Jack Reacher is the hero we deserve, a massive hulk of a man whose incredible physicality matches his sharp wit and intellect. He's the perfect dude, capable of taking down armies with nothing but his bare hands while outwitting the most cunning of villains.
I've read almost all of Lee Child's sprawling book series featuring Reacher. Each comes jam-packed with intricate plots, violent criminals, and beautiful women. Think James Bond with more violence and fewer jokes.
Reacher's journey to the screen kicked off with the brilliant Tom Cruise vehicle "Jack Reacher," but has since found new life in the form of Amazon's "Reacher," starring Alan Ritchson in the title role. The series, adapted from Child's first novel, "The Killing Floor," is a dream come true and perfectly captures the character's nature without compromise. That includes a flurry of fight sequences that pit our muscle-packing hero against swarms of enemies,...

There seems to be endless low budget horror with titles like the one above (and I have watched many!). ‘The Curse of…’ or ‘The Haunting of…’ and it’s always 50/50 on the quality so I generally go in with low expectations.
I will say right off the bat that The Curse of Buckout Road exceeded those expectations. Buckout Road is ‘the most haunted road in America’ and the movie covers some of the myths, legends, ghosts and folklore that apparently haunt the road. There’s plenty on show and I’m sure plenty more if they were needed for a sequel. A group of young people start to think that these myths might...

Before he swung into the Spider-Man suit, Tom Holland found some time to lead an independent drama alongside Joel Kinnaman. Edge of Winter, the directorial debut from Rob Connolly, follows the two as father and son as they venture into the woods on a day trip that turns dangerous. It’s more fitting than frustrating that Slasher, horror network Chiller’s first foray into original scripted programming, unspools as an unabashed amalgam of horror movie tropes. After all, the NBCUniversal-owned channel has carved out a funky little niche for itself broadcasting “scary good” films and TV series, from classics like Kolchak: The Night Stalker to little gems like Harper’s Island, not so much curating its content as airing it all as a bloody buffet for horror hounds.
That approach has kept the lights on up until now, encouraging Chiller to think bigger with original features like Animal and (excellent) SXSW entry The Boy. And so, despite the creative energies of director Craig David Wallace (Todd and the Book of Pure Evil) and writer-creator Aaron Martin (DeGrassi: The Next Generation), it makes sense that Slasher is also guided by the techniques and...

‘RoboCop’ 2014 movie: Full-fledged flop at domestic box office (photo: Joel Kinnaman in ‘RoboCop’ 2014) Directed by José Padilha, and starring Joel Kinnaman and Abbie Cornish, Sony Pictures’ $100 million-budgeted RoboCop 2014 remake opened with disappointing numbers on Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Things improved a bit over the weekend, but there’s no denying that RoboCop 2014 will become a major domestic box office bomb. (See also: José Padilha hates ‘RoboCop’ 2014 filmmaking process.) According to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo, Padilha’s remake of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 "classic" (as mentioned elsewhere on this site, just about anything made before 2003 is considered a classic these days) landed in third place this extended Presidents Day Weekend, February 14-17, trailing both Warner Bros.’ overwhelmingly well-received The Lego Movie and Sony Pictures / ScreenGems’ low-budget romantic comedy About Last Night. Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street), and featuring the voices of Chris Pratt,...

Any movie that tries a lot harder than it needs to is all right in my book. And that’s exactly the case with RoboCop, an impressive reboot of the Paul Verhoeven classic that, much to my delight, fires on all cylinders, blending furious action, strong acting and an inventive script to create a film that uses familiar parts to build something sleek, smart and entirely capable of going toe-to-toe with Verhoeven’s original.
I’m well aware that fans of the original RoboCop will balk at that praise, call it unsubstantiated and probably even berate me for entirely missing the point, but hear me out. What Verhoeven’s film did fantastically was address the political hot topics and concerns of its time (declining industry, privatization, etc.) by playing them out in a futuristic, but believable, setting. And while José Padilha’s PG-13 remake arrives without the original’s enticing ultraviolence,...

Trying to do a beat-by-beat remake of a classic film is usually a recipe for disaster, and to his credit, director Jose Padilha doesn't do that with the new iteration of RoboCop. Paul Verhoeven's 1987 original is a mix of biting satire and ridiculously gratuitous violence, but Padilha turns RoboCop into a blend of familial bonds and social commentary. Unfortunately, both efforts never reach their full potential as the emphasis on the family relationship lacks depth, and the story casts too wide of a net on its commentary, so it never really finds fresh insight into any particular issue. Although it ditches the extreme violence of Verhoeven's film, the new RoboCop manages to be at least a serviceable action movie with admirable goals. Detroit Police Detective Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) is attempting to bring down criminal kingpin Antoine Vallon (Patrick Garrow), but Vallon retaliates by using a car bomb to almost completely destroy Murphy.

We delve into the RoboCop remake to provide a spoiler-filled look at how it compares to the original, and what it gets right...
Nb: this article contains spoilers.
The problem with most modern movie remakes, perhaps, is that they're a compromise where commerce frequently trounces art. With brand-aware studios keen to revive old names and properties for the sake of profit, it becomes the job of a new generation of filmmakers to rework an existing idea for a contemporary and often suspicious audience.
