‘We could do this show forever’: ‘Somebody Somewhere’ creators on final season, heart, and the humor of Bridget Everett
Image
"We could do this show forever. We love it so much."

Those are the shared sentiments of Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, the creators of HBO's critically acclaimed series Somebody Somewhere, who recently sat down with Gold Derby to reflect on the show's exploration of love, chosen family, and Midwest quirks — as well as its abrupt conclusion after three beloved seasons. Created for and starring Bridget Everett, the series earned a Peabody Award and multiple critical accolades for its tender yet hilarious portrayal of life in Manhattan, Kan.

While HBO did not pick up the series for a fourth season, the creators are satisfied with how things ended. "Yes, we're sad that it's over, but we're happy that it gets to be out there forever," says Bos. "Especially now ... the world feels a little bit weirder, so it's nice to have a comforting show out in the world."

Thureen elaborates,...

‘Somebody Somewhere’ final season aims big for 2025 Emmys: Bridget Everett in Best Actress, Comedy Writing, and Original Music categories
Image
Somebody Somewhere, HBO's critically acclaimed comedy that aired its third and final season last year, is making one final push for Emmys consideration.

Gold Derby has learned that HBO will submit Somebody Somewhere Season 3 in 22 categories at the 2025 Emmys, including for Best Comedy Series and five of its cast members.

Bridget Everett, who plays Sam, will be submitted again in Best Comedy Actress. The show's star is also being submitted for cowriting the series finale, "Agg," with showrunners Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, as well as her original music and lyrics for "It's Just Love" from the episode "Dinky Dinkies."

A trio of Sam's best pals will battle it out in the Best Comedy Supporting Actor Category: Jeff Hiller who plays Joel, Tim Bagley who plays Joel's partner Brad, and Murray Hill as the newly health-conscious Fred. Mary Catherine Garrison, who plays Sam's sister Tricia, is the show's lone submission for Best Comedy Supporting Actress.

‘It changed my life’: Bridget Everett reflects on the emotional end of ‘Somebody Somewhere’
Image
It’s the end of an era for Bridget Everett. Somebody Somewhere — the HBO comedy series she starred in, executive produced, and cowrote for three seasons — aired its final episode on Dec. 8, 2024.

"It changed my life," Everett tells Gold Derby (watch the video interview above). "It's the best thing that's ever happened to me. I don't have kids so I can say that. Getting to be on HBO with a show crafted for me, around me, partially by me — it just feels like something that you can't even dream of."

Last August, HBO confirmed that the critically acclaimed, Peabody Award-winning series would not return for a fourth season.

Everett reveals that the cast and crew of Somebody Somewhere didn’t know the series was ending when they wrapped Season 3, but she feels at peace with how it concluded. “We wrote it not as a series finale, but as a season finale,...

‘The Baltimorons’ Review: Jay Duplass Delivers a Real Christmas Gift With a Warm and Witty Romance
Image
“Oh wow, we can take 34th Street,” Cliff (Michael Strassner) mentions to Didi (Liz Larsen) making their way to a Christmas Eve party in “The Balitmorons,” clearly appreciating the serendipity of an avenue associated with the holiday. Didi though, shows no sentimentality in suggesting a different route. Director Jay Duplass finds a road somewhere between those two lanes to make a joyful yet bittersweet comedy. Primed to become a seasonal standard, the film tracks two lost souls who find comfort in one another as all the other family get-togethers spark the loneliest of nights.

Both Cliff and Didi are in for a rough go of it; the two meet due to a chipped tooth that the former suffers on the way over to the family home of his girlfriend Brittany (Olivia Luccardi). Didi, a dentist, is one of the few in town to take an appointment during the holiday; for her,...

SXSW Review: Jay Duplass’ The Baltimorons is a Sincere Throwback to Mumblecore’s Heyday
Image
A return to form for Jay Duplass, who’s also making his solo-directing debut, The Baltimorons is a charming throwback to the low-budget indies he directed with his brother Mark. Written and starring burly stand-up comedian Michael Strassner, the Baltimore-set film follows the mis-adventures of an unlikely romantic duo: Strassner’s Cliff, a stand-up comedian six months sober, and his older workaholic dentist Didi (Liz Larsen). Cliff is bantering with his fiancée Brittany (Olivia Luccardi) when he falls and chips a tooth, sending him frantically searching for a dentist who will take him on Christmas Eve. Didi is the only one who takes his call, agreeing to meet him in her empty office for surgery.

Cliff is a silly teddy bear who aims to please even when he frequently oversteps the line into offending. He’s generously curious, often living life to acquire new material for stand-up. Like the personal...

‘The Baltimorons’ Review: Jay Duplass’ May-December Romance Is a Stealth Charmer With a Low-Key ‘After Hours’ Vibe
Image
After co-directing a handful of no-frills indies with his brother Mark and working for more than a decade in episodic television, Jay Duplass makes an agreeably unassuming solo feature debut behind the camera with The Baltimorons. Marbled with a tender vein of melancholy alongside its unforced comedy, the film follows a thirtysomething, recently sober ex-improv comic who breaks a tooth and requires urgent dental care on Christmas Eve, spawning an unlikely romance. It’s the kind of quirky concept that could easily have been cringe material, but the actors give it a lived-in naturalism that sneaks up on you.

Aside from his acting and producing credits, Duplass’ regular gig since 2015 has been directing TV episodes, notably on Togetherness, Search Party, and most recently, Somebody Somewhere. (I will never stop being mad about that consistently great show getting zero Emmy attention.) Just as Somebody Somewhere was molded with piercing character insight around its star,...

What to watch next if you loved HBO's 'Somebody Somewhere'
Image
The feel-good dramedy series wrapped up its three-season run this past weekend, but there are plenty of other shows to watch next.

Pour out one last tiny ‘tini or margarini for TV’s best feel-good series. This past Sunday, Dec. 8, HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere,” starring Bridget Everett, finished airing its third and final season. Everett starred as Sam, a woman in her 40s who returns to her hometown of Manhattan, Kansas, to navigate the death of her sister, where she finds a new and renewed community amongst her family and friends.

Few shows in recent memory have felt as warm and authentic as “Somebody Somewhere,” which also co-starred Jeff Hiller, Mary Catherine Garrison, Murray Hill, and more, never shying away from sadness or loneliness but instead embracing it with empathy toward being alive.

If you, too, have a Kansas-sized hole in your heart and are looking for more comedies about moving forward through life,...

Why the ‘Somebody Somewhere’ Creators Don’t Believe the Series Finale Is Goodbye
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from the series finale of Somebody Somewhere.]

The final episode of Somebody Somewhere goes out on a literal high note. As the HBO comedy’s supporting cast (Jeff Hiller, Mary Catherine Garrison, Murray Hill, Tim Bagley) looks on, Bridget Everett’s Sam offers a toast and performs a stirring rendition of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb.” It’s a fitting end for a series whose greatest strength was often its ability to be sentimental without being saccharine, and it’s easy to view the scene as a symbolic farewell for its stars. “We didn’t know that would be the series finale, but we really have been writing like any moment could be the last moment of the show,” says co-creator Hannah Bos. “We also shot that during our first week of production on this season due to cast availability, so we really were just like, ‘I hope this works.'”

Bos and her longtime collaborator...

Somebody Somewhere’s Bridget Everett Talks Grief and Second Chances in Series Finale — Plus, What Happened With Iceland?
Image
In Somebody Somewhere’s series finale — which TVLine readers are thus far giving a rare average grade of “A+” — a forgotten birthday led to tears, as Tricia finally stepped inside her late sister’s house to face her continued grief head-on. As Sam held her hand through her sadness, we witnessed just how much the sisters’ relationship has grown throughout the years.

“When Holly passed away, she was the buffer,” Bridget Everett tells TVLine. “Over time, when you’re kind of stuck with someone, either you have to figure it out or just live in the misery of what you’ve created as a relationship.

‘Somebody Somewhere’ Star Bridget Everett Says That Song Was the HBO Comedy’s Perfect Unplanned Ending
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Somebody Somewhere” Season 3, Episode 7.

“Somebody Somewhere” sang its final song, and Bridget Everett said the uplifting performance made for the HBO comedy’s perfect unplanned ending.

After three seasons of laughter, music and big emotional lows, the critically-acclaimed series from Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen ended its run with Everett’s Sam inviting her friends and loved ones to a celebration at her bar, where she sang a tearjerking rendition of “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus.

The song also served as the perfect bow to tie up a standout seven-episode season of “Somebody Somewhere,” which followed as Sam, a grief-stricken but lovable resident of Manhattan, Kansas, made huge strides to grow her confidence — and even found a romantic connection in her family farm’s tenant Iceland (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson).

The fact that Sunday’s episode, titled “Agg,” was not originally intended to be a...

‘Somebody Somewhere’ Never Has to End (but the Finale Is Still Incredible)
Image
Editor’s note: “Somebody Somewhere” is IndieWire’s No. 1 TV show of the year. After that decision was made, we called up co-creators Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen as well as star Bridget Everett to chat about what makes it so special.

“Somebody Somewhere” had to end sometime… didn’t it?

Considered by itself, the impossibly endearing HBO comedy from co-creators Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, alongside star and executive producer Bridget Everett, is exactly the type of show that could go on forever. Following Sam (Everett) after she moves back to her hometown of Manhattan, Ks, the slice-of-life series sees her reconnecting with one sister while grieving another, finding friends in unexpected places, and learning to love herself despite all the voices telling her otherwise. In other words, she’s forging the fundamental building blocks of a good life — a continuous process through moments big and small.

“The connection,...

Cobra Kai Boss Talks Scandalous Season 6 Hookup: ‘Sometimes Friction Can Create a Spark’
Image
The drama from a kids karate tournament couldn’t stop a pair of Cobra Kai characters from taking a well-deserved break for some, uhh, extracurricular activity. And no, we aren’t talking about Robby and Zara.

Tensions rose higher than ever in Season 6, Part 2, which led Chozen and Kim Da-Eun to get a bit physical. Only this time, it wasn’t a sparring match. (Well, it was until it wasn’t.) While out one night in Barcelona, the two senseis did come to blows, but that frustration quickly morphed into a make-out session and so much more. Let’s just...

Cobra Kai’s Thomas Ian Griffith on Silver’s Return, Rivalry With Kreese: ‘He’s Not a Redeemable Character in Terry’s Eyes’

Daniel and Chozen were in for some major shocks in Cobra Kai’s latest batch of episodes, but they definitely didn’t expect this.

After following the man who abducted Daniel to a spa, they couldn’t believe their eyes amid the steamy air and roar of hot tub jets: Terry Silver was back. “What would life be without a few surprises?” Silver asked the speechless group of senseis, which also included Kim Da-Eun and John Kreese. And with that, the stakes of the Sekai Taikai were raised even higher, as Miyagi-Do (and Cobra Kai) scrambled to get ahead of Silver’s next moves.

Image
Don’t worry, fans of the 1999 movie Cruel Intentions: the creators of the new adaptation for Prime haven’t forgotten to pay tribute to the classic Sarah Michelle Gellar starrer.

To help satiate the old fans while hoping to lure new ones, Showrunners Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman told an audience at Deadline’s inaugural TV Sidebar as the Scad Savannah Film Festival Saturday that they added multiple Easter eggs in the pilot to pay homage to the film.

They’ve already announced one big one: Sean Patrick Thomas, who starred as Ronald in the original, is back playing a professor in the new iteration that stars Sarah Catherine Hook (Caroline Merteuil) and Zac Burgess (Lucien Valmont) as the affluent step-siblings bent on causing mayhem. When a hazing incident puts Caroline’s sorority in jeopardy, she enlists Lucien’s help to get the vice president’s daughter Annie (Savannah Lee Smith...

‘Somebody Somewhere’ Cast & Creators Address Final Season, The Show’s Plot & Those C— Pillows
Image
As Somebody Somewhere completes its third and final season on HBO, Bridget Everett is ready to reveal how her gem of a comedy comes up with stories about life in a small Kansas town.

“Plot isn’t central to our show,” the actress admitted Friday at Deadline’s Inaugural TV Sidebar, which launched this year as part of the Scad Film Festival in Savannah, Ga. “I think that’s what makes it unique. It’s just our taste, I guess. We’re more interested in the way the characters interact with each other. In season one, we tried to do a little more plotting. But every time, it didn’t feel organic to the show. So it’s really more about putting people in situations and how they can grow off of each other.”

Launched in 2022, the series follows Sam (Everett), a true Kansan who struggles with loss and acceptance in her midwestern hometown.

‘Somebody Somewhere’ Used Bridget Everett’s Real-Life Dog for Heartbreaking Season 3 Premiere Twist: ‘She Nailed It’
Image
Note: The following story contains spoilers from the “Somebody Somewhere” Season 3 premiere.

“Somebody Somewhere” kicked off its third and final season with promises of growth and a heartbreaking twist involving an adorable rescue dog named Pepper — who happened to be played by star Bridget Everett’s real-life pup.

The HBO comedy series kicked off Season 3 Sunday with “Margarini,” in which Sam (Bridget Everett) found herself feeling adrift while witnessing her friends and family getting settled into new dynamics. Best friend Joel (Jeff Hiller) revealed a new step in his blossoming relationship with Brad (Tim Bagley), telling Sam that they were moving in together; Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) dipped into the dating waters after officially getting divorced; and Fred (Murray Hill) faced new lifestyle changes as he settled into his marriage to Susan (Jennifer Mudge). Everett wrote the episode alongside series creators Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen.

Somebody Somewhere Bosses, Bridget Everett Reflect on Sam’s Growth and Fear of Change in Season 3 Premiere
Image
Change can be scary for anyone and in Season 3 of Somebody Somewhere, Sam’s about to face it head on whether she likes it or not.

In Sunday’s premiere, Sam’s world is turned upside down. Her sister Tricia is getting a divorce, Joel is prepping to move in with his boyfriend Brad, and Sam is even considering getting a dog. Even though the drama from Season 2 is well behind her and she’s accepting life’s twists and turns at face value, it’s still a lot to manage for a woman who doesn’t quite know where she fits into this world.

‘Somebody Somewhere’ Review: Season 3 Offers a Ray of Light Among TV’s Dark Days
Image
Singing is an act of faith. Whether you’re alone in the shower or mic’d up on stage, every time you turn your voice into an instrument, you’re asking for trust — trust that others will want to hear it, trust that you’ll remember all the words, notes, and rhythms, and, perhaps most importantly, trust that you’ll be happy with whatever comes out.

Faith isn’t easy to come by for Sam (Bridget Everett). When we first met the Kansas native in the first season of HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere,” she’s working a dismal office job. She’s just lost her sister, Holly, after a year of caring for her in their Manhattan, Ks hometown. Sam’s parents are on the decline, and the rest of her family isn’t exactly a fount of inspiration. Even friends are hard to come by. To say Sam’s...

‘Somebody Somewhere,’ Thank You for Being A Friend
Image
We’re in an era of entertainment maximalism. Superheroes with larger-than-life powers; cinematic universes with a dozen franchises or more; huge swings with even the unlikeliest IP: all are inescapable. So it’s nearly a miracle that Somebody Somewhere, which seems like an experiment in how small a story can be and still enthrall its audience, has lasted this long. With its third and final season, it ends as it began: portraying the vital necessity of true friendship, especially later in life.

In the first season, Sam (Bridget Everett) has relatively recently returned from New York City to her hometown of Manhattan, Kansas, for her sister Holly’s last days. As the series begins, Holly has died of cancer, and Sam is just trying to maintain baseline functionality. She doesn’t realize that Joel (Jeff Hiller), now her co-worker at her job reading college admission essays, knew her when they were both in high school,...

HBO’s ‘Somebody Somewhere’ Returns: ‘The Theme Was G, Double A, O: Growth Against All Odds’
Image
“Somebody Somewhere” is a show about friendship.

It’s also a show about trying. And growing. And about a million other things that happen in the quest to find your people — wherever they may be.

For the crew of “Somebody Somewhere” that place is Manhattan, Kansas, and over three too-quick seasons, the Peabody-winning comedy series centers on Sam (Bridget Everett), a woman attempting to put her life back together in a small town after the death of her sister. She’s dealing with a lot of self-hate, but slowly she learns to build her own community — which includes new best friend Joel (Jeff Hiller), occasional nemesis sister Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison), and many others, including memorable turns from Murray Hill and Tim Bagley.

“One of the things I love about the show is we’re more character driven [as opposed to plot],” Everett told IndieWire. “The most interesting storytelling is just thinking about Joel...

Farewell to ‘Somebody Somewhere,’ TV’s Rare Love Letter to Middle America
Image
In the opening scene of the third season of Somebody Somewhere, Bridget Everett’s character, Sam Miller, crouches on the floor of a bar, talking baby-talk to a dog. When she gets up she shows a patron a picture of a dog she’s dreaming about adopting. Then, she leaves, singing in her truck down a Kansas dirt road, heading into town to celebrate her sister’s divorce with margaritas and queso.

The moments of this show are not seismic. There are no big boardroom deals. No tantruming megarich eldest boys playing with election outcomes.

Somebody Somewhere Season 3 Review — HBO’s Most Underappreciated Show Concludes With Its Best Season Yet
Image
The Duplass Brothers-produced series Somebody Somewhere has long been championed by critics and fans but didn’t receive any accolades on a major scale until it won a Peabody Award for its wonderful second season. This recognition will hopefully bring the show to a broader audience in time for its third and final season to warm and crush their hearts, as it is an incredible work of slice-of-life dramedy that somehow tops the already incredible first two seasons.

Somebody Somewhere Season 3 Review

This season follows the small-town Kansans we’ve come to know — Sam, Joel, and all their friends and loved ones — as they grow apart, each experiencing their own struggles. Although splitting up the cast of an ensemble-driven show like Somebody Somewhere is often a mistake, this approach feels incredibly and unexpectedly natural here because it is rooted in a thematic need rather than a narrative one.

’Somebody Somewhere’s’ Final Season Is Exceptional Television: TV Review
Image
In Season 1 of HBO’s Peabody Award-winning dramedy “Somebody Somewhere,” Sam Miller (Bridget Everett) worked through her grief and anger in the months following her older sister Holly’s death. Now, in the third season of this outstanding series, Sam finally settles into her tiny community and tries to navigate change without retreating into old habits of isolation and self-loathing. Just as magical as ever, the final season of “Somebody Somewhere” is a stunningly honest depiction of friendship, grace and courage.

Set in Manhattan, Kansas, “Somebody Somewhere” captures the quiet, charm and monotony of small-town living. Instead of being patronizing, creators Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen offer a hilarious and beautifully compassionate window into this particular place,...
