5 Underrated Clint Eastwood Movies Every Self-Proclaimed Fan Needs To Watch
Image
Clint Eastwood got his start in an uncredited role in a hokey monster movie "Revenge of the Creature" in 1955. Cut to 70 years later, he's still in the business of making movies. It was his starring role on the long-running Western series "Rawhide," where he played the first of many cowboys throughout his career, that launched him to fame. Now there are over 100 credits to his name on IMDb, not only as an actor, but as a prolific director, writer, and even composer.

As one of the last true relics of the classic Hollywood studio system, he has witnessed or been a part of nearly every major change or movement in film, making his filmography vast and varied. For as many famous and highly-rated Clint Eastwood movies — such as Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Westerns, where he plays the now legendary Man With No Name, or his Academy Award-winning "Unforgiven" and "Million Dollar Baby...

Grammys 2025: The Complete Guide to Parties and Events (Updating)
Image
This year’s Grammy week will be looking a little different, as the show will take place shortly after Los Angeles was devastated by wildfires in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena. Music’s biggest night will mark the first awards show to take place in L.A. since the tragedy began on Jan. 7, and many of the typical Grammy events have been canceled as the usual players — including Spotify and the major labels — redirect resources to aid wildfire relief efforts.

However, a handful of events will carry on with a charitable component, including the starry Clive Davis party and MusiCares tribute concert. Check out this year’s still-on Grammys celebrations below.

Wednesday, Jan. 29

Rampd (Recording Artists and Music Professionals with Disabilities) will present DisCo House, which aims to amplify disability inclusion in the music industry in partnership with the Recording Academy’s Raa+D Network,...

Monty Python Only Played the Hollywood Bowl Because They Were Avoiding Writing ‘The Meaning of Life’
Image
1982’s Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl, is one of the all-time great comedy concert films, perfectly capturing the iconic troupe’s electric stage presence back in the days when they were all still alive, and didn’t hate each other’s guts.

The Pythons spent four nights in September of 1980 headlining the famous venue, which they themselves revered. “There was just something about performing at the Hollywood Bowl which I think tickled all of us,” Michael Palin once confessed, “because we were all brought up on LPs of people 'Live at the Hollywood Bowl,' whether it was Sinatra or Errol Garner or the big bands that played on the stage there.”

Terry Jones noted that it was “kind of a party,” and the chill vibe even infected noted crank John Cleese. “I enjoyed every minute of it, and had a wonderful time,” Cleese later admitted. That rock...

A 60-year-old song topped the Billboard charts after appearing in 1.8 million TikToks
Image
More than 60 years after it was recorded, Lesley Gore‘s “Misty” is the hottest song on TikTok. Gore’s 1963 take on the Erroll Garner standard achieved a first-place finish in the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart thanks to its use in a widespread trend.

Gore’s shuffling rendition of “Misty” has appeared in more than 1.8 million TikToks. In recent months, the song has provided the soundtrack for a viral meme, in which participants show how their appearance changes with or without a particular attribute. As memes are wont to do, the “Misty” bit has evolved to become self-referential.

@pokeballbabe♬ Misty – Lesley Gore

“Misty” is the oldest song to reach #1 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50, which debuted last September. The recent addition to Billboard’s pop charts is meant to recognize songs that are going viral on TikTok and measure their subsequent cultural impact. Billboard noted that the next-oldest TikTok chart-topper, Mariah Carey...

Why Clint Eastwood Never Considered Another Song For Play Misty For Me
Image
When you think of Clint Eastwood, your first, second, or even fifth thoughts wouldn't associate him with psychological thrillers. This is a man who makes Westerns, crime films, and character dramas about people who the system tries to squash. However, he plunged directly into the psychological thriller for his directorial debut "Play Misty for Me" over half a century ago. This is a classic tale of an obsessive, spurned ex-lover that we see time and time again in cinema, most famously in Adrian Lyne's 1987 blockbuster "Fatal Attraction." In this film, Jessica Walter plays the knife-wielding woman, and Eastwood is the radio DJ with whom she develops a parasocial (and then physical) relationship.

The reason the film is called "Play Misty for Me," aside from being a wonderfully mysterious title, is that the jazz standard "Misty" by Erroll Garner is at the heart of the film. Walter's character frequently calls...

’30’ Is the Best Adele Album Yet
Image
“Mama’s been having a lot of big feelings recently,” Adele announces early on in 30. Hands up—who’s surprised? This is Adele, after all. She was born with big feelings, and ever since the day she first stepped into a recording studio, she’s been off-the-charts brilliant at sharing them with the world. That’s why total strangers hear ourselves in the swoops and raptures of her voice, even as it gets more flexible, stealthy, dangerous. If you were expecting this woman’s divorce album to be a smooth ride,...

Adele's 30 Album Is Coming! Here's Everything We Know So Far
Image

Adele finally has new music on the way! On Oct. 14, the singer released "Easy on Me," her first single from her long-awaited 30 album, which will be dropping on Nov. 19. She announced the big news on social media. "I was certainly nowhere near where I'd hoped to be when I first started it nearly 3 years ago," she wrote. "Quite the opposite actually. I rely on routine and consistency to feel safe, I always have. And yet there I was knowingly - willingly even, throwing myself into a maze of absolute mess and inner turmoil!"

"I've learned a lot of blistering home truths about myself along the way. I've shed many layers but also wrapped myself in new ones. Discovered genuinely useful and wholesome mentalities to lead with, and I feel like I've finally found my feeling again. I'd go so far as to say that I've never...

Johnny Cash in The Johnny Cash Show (1969)
Why Country Hall of Fame Inductee Ray Stevens Is More Than Just ‘The Streak’ Guy
Johnny Cash in The Johnny Cash Show (1969)
Just as the popular portrayal of Johnny Cash as a lawless hellraiser overlooks a nuanced man’s love of faith and family, painting 80-year-old Country Music Hall of Fame inductee Ray Stevens as just a comedy act undercuts his decades of work as a producer, businessman and multi-Grammy-winning singer of serious country and gospel songs.

Stevens’ role as an ambassador for country music began as soon as the Atlanta-area native inked his first record deal in 1957. Beyond making a mark with “Ahab the Arab” and other early-career novelty sides, Stevens...

How Aretha Franklin’s Jazz Beginnings Predicted Her Genre-Transcending Career
Erroll Garner
The trappings are all there: the smattering of polite applause, the tinkling piano laying out the chord changes of a familiar tune — Erroll Garner’s “Misty,” in this case. But with the entrance of the singer, something shifts; suddenly the record isn’t jazz as usual. Aretha Franklin lands on an opening “Ooo” softly and steadily, holding the note for what from anyone else would be too long and letting it slowly expand and brighten before contracting into a perfectly even vibrato. The song’s actual first word, “Look,” goes...

Matthew Shipp, State-of-the-Art Jazz Pianist
Those who keep up with the more avant-garde end of the jazz spectrum have long known that Matthew Shipp is one of the great pianists, but he's reached a higher level of creativity this decade, most recently displayed in his two releases this year, the new solo album I've Been to Many Places and the trio album The Root of Things.

Quick recap of how he got there: While growing up in Delaware, Shipp studied privately with Dennis Sandole, one of John Coltrane's teachers. Later, at New England Conservatory, Shipp studied with Joe Maneri, another avant-jazz great. Shipp's recording career began in 1988 with a duo album with saxophonist Rob Brown, and within a few years the pianist had joined the David S. Ware Quartet; he recorded with that group from 1990 until it disbanded in 2007, then increased his already prolific output by making over two dozen albums as leader or...

Mike Stoller on the Musical Universe of the Brill Building
Charlie Parker, Sven Bollhem, Max Roach International Jazz Festival
As told to Rebecca Milzoff I was born in New York City, and I lived here until I was 16. One of my earliest memories having to do with music in New York was hanging out on 52nd Street at the jazz clubs in the 1940s, like the Three Deuces; the Famous Door; the Onyx Club; Jimmy Ryan’s, where I would go to hear Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, Lucky Thompson, Erroll Garner. I would go up to the bar and in my deepest voice—with my schoolbooks under my arm—say, “I’ll have a beer.” I think if you could reach the bar, they’d serve you a beer. It was thrilling.Jerry and I started writing when we were 17 in L.A., and when we arrived at the Brill Building, we’d had a number of hits already—“Hound Dog,” and “Kansas City,” “Searchin’,” and “Young Blood,...

Doc On Self-Taught Jazz Legend Erroll Garner Coming To DVD In April
Erroll Garner was and still is considered one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. He was called by one jazz critic, a "brilliant virtuoso" and "one of the most distinctive of all pianists." Another writer said of Garner: "playing the piano for him was as easy as breathing is for you and me." His numerous recordings, compostions and performances remain classics, and are held up as standards to which other musicians judge themseves by. However, there was one major surprising factor about Garner that made him even more amazing. A music prodigy from the age of three, what is truly unique about Garner is that he was completely...

Spring Jazz Review Roundup
Eddie Daniels/Roger Kellaway: Live at the Library of Congress (Ipo)

The surprising thing about this album is how wild it is. I didn't expect this clarinet/piano duo playing lots of very old standards to shoot off on weird tangents filled with such startling dissonances; I've heard Daniels and Kellaway in separate contexts before this, and they were less adventurous then. They play the themes straightforwardly, but sometimes open those tracks with left-field intros that would make even Erroll Garner smile a bit enviously. And once they get to their solos (mostly in the sense of "featured," in Daniels's case, though Kellaway really is solo and sometimes he drops out to let Daniels fly unaccompanied), you never know whether you're going to hear a sedately prim excursion on bebop-level harmonies or a spurt of exuberance that takes in a wider range of styles. Their reading of Thelonious Monk's "Rhythm-a-ning,...

Best Soundtracks Of 2011
I didn’t think I would have to insult the intelligence of our readers by pointing out a very simple fact, but based on the first comment we received, I guess I should make something clear. This is a list of our favourite soundtracks of 2011. We are currently working on a list of the best original scores, which should be posted sometime within the week. Let us know if you think we left out any soundtracks you would recommend. Enjoy!

10 – Young Adult

One of the themes of Jason Reitman’s upcoming film Young Adult, is the idea of being stuck in the past, and trying to relive your glory days, and so it’s no surprise that the soundtrack to the film is loathed with 1990s alt-rock cuts. Due December 6th via Rhino Records, the fifteen-track disc features the Replacements, the Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr., Teenage Fanclub, Cracker, 4 Non Blondes, Veruca Salt and many more.

Top 100 movies of the 1970s
Michael York dashes onto the cinematic scene as the blundering but very enthusiastic D'Artagnan in Richard Lester's hugely enjoyable period comic romp. The late great Roy Kinnear is the long-suffering vassal of aristocratic swordsmen Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain and Frank Finlay, whilst Raquel Welch and Faye Dunaway shine as heroine and villainess, respectively.
