Trivia

Boyd Gaines

Edit
  • Has been nominated for - and has won - Broadway's Tony Award three times, and each time in a different category: in 1989 as Best Actor (Featured Role - Play) for Wendy Wasserstein's "The Heidi Chronicles;" in 1994 as Best Actor (Musical) for a revival of "She Loves Me;" and in 2000 as Best Actor (Featured Role - Musical) for "Contact." No other actor has won Tony Awards in this many categories.
  • Boyd won his 4th Tony Award in 2008 for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for the revival of Gypsy.
  • Trained at Juilliard, he found early stage work on the NYC stage at the New York Shakespeare Festival, the Roundabout Theatre and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
  • Played Valerie Bertinelli's boyfriend and eventual husband in the last seasons of Au fil des jours (1975).
  • His first two films were Fame (1980) and Porky's (1981). In the first he played an school student and in the second played a school teacher.
  • Boyd received his 4th Tony nomination in 2007 as Best Actor in a Play for Journey's End. The award went to Frank Langella for Frost/Nixon.
  • Boyd Gaines and Frank Langella have each won 4 acting Tony Awards, the most of any actor (actress Audra McDonald has won 6 in competition). Boyd's 4 wins: 1989 for "The Heidi Chronicles"(Featured Actor in a Play); 1994 for "She Loves Me"(Lead Actor in a Musical); 2000 for "Contact"(Featured Actor in a Musical); and 2008 for "Gypsy"( Featured Actor in a Musical). Boyd's only other nomination is in 2007 for "Journey's End"(Lead Actor in a Play), so he has been nominated in all 4 acting categories. Only Audra McDonald has won in all 4 acting categories.
  • Boyd Gaines and Raul Esparza are the only two actors to receive Tony nominations in every acting category. Boyd has won 4 awards in three of the categories (Featured Actor, Play and Musical, Lead Actor, Musical). In spite of receiving 4 nominations, Raul has not won. Three actresses have nominations in all 4 acting categories: Audra McDonald, Angela Lansbury, and Jan Maxwell.
  • Trained at Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts (PCPA).
  • Studied acting with Michael Howard in New York City.
  • Has one daughter, Leslie Gaines, with Kathleen McNenny.
