Dolly Parton Starred In A Sitcom That's Impossible To Watch
Image
Dolly Parton, a titan of the music industry, an amusement park tycoon, a philanthropist, philosopher, actress, and probably some kind of benevolent deity, never quite conquered the medium of scripted television. Of course, Dolly appeared on TV all the time, going back as far as 1956's "Cas Walker Farm and Home Hour," but she most typically appeared as a singer or musical performer. Throughout her career, she sang on shows like "Music City, U.S.A.," "Hee Haw," and "The Mike Douglas Show." In 1976, she even hosted her own variety show, "Dolly!," which, sadly, only lasted 26 episodes. That's not to be confused with "Dolly," the variety show she launched in 1987. That, sadly, only lasted 22 episodes. Dolly was on "Hollywood Squares," "Captain Kangaroo," and even the 1983 animated version of "Alvin and the Chipmunks." She played herself on "Designing Women" in the 1990s. Dolly has always been a stalwart, dedicated performer, and...

10 Horror Movies With Terrifying Endings That Will Haunt Us Forever
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for all the movies mentioned in this article. The horror genre continues to terrify audiences with great sequels like Smile 2, and new, original movies such as the Hugh Grant thriller Heretic. It's a genre that has consistently provided audiences with moments of pure terror, by either introducing new characters like Art the Clown in the Terrifier series, or with wildly inventive body horror films like Coralie Fargaet's The Substance. However, many horror movies are iconic because of their shocking endings.

The Substance's ending is a great example of a modern film with a sick, gruesome final act that lingers long in the memory. What's so great about it, is that it isn't just done for shock value. The scene is a great culmination of the protagonist's journey, and is a great way to close the movie's narrative. The movie joins a long list in the horror genre,...

Can ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ claim a trio of acting wins at the 2024 Tony Awards?
Image
The actors from the current revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Merrily We Roll Along” have skyrocketed in Gold Derby’s combined odds for the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. The prediction center displays commanding leads for Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe to win their respective categories. This is an understandable result considering this revival is the hottest ticket in town and this trio of performers has been ever-present in the media. But how often does a trio of actors from the same production pull off three separate acting victories at the Tony Awards?

It’s quite common for a musical to grab two acting trophies, but three awards is much rarer. To date, only 15 musical productions have earned three acting wins. The first time this feat occurred was at the 1956 ceremony, which was ironically the first time the Tony Awards ever announced a slate of nominees (previously...

Stephen Sondheim at the Tony Awards: All 75 wins from ‘West Side Story’ to ‘Assassins’
Image
Stephen Sondheim has almost never been more popular than in the two years since his passing in November 2021. In that time, celebrated revivals of “Company,” “Into the Woods,” and “Sweeney Todd” have come to Broadway, and successful remounting of “Assassins” and “Merrily We Roll Along” have played Off-Broadway, which is a testament to the enduring appeal of his works.

This fall will once again spotlight Sondheim. The tremendously successful Off-Broadway run of “Merrily” starring Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe opens on Broadway on October 10, which will mark the first remounting since its original, unsuccessful run in 1981. In addition, his final musical “Here We Are,” which is based on two Luis Buñuel films—“The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “The Exterminating Angel”—will have its highly-anticipated world premiere Off-Broadway, opening on October 22.

In honor of another “season of Sondheim,” take a look back at every single Tony...

The curious case of ‘Company’ at the Tony Awards: Never any love for the star
Image
Bobby, bubi, we need to talk about the Tony Awards! This season’s revival of the late Stephen Sondheim’s landmark musical “Company” earned nine nominations, the highest for any musical revival of the year and the fourth largest tally of any show. It earned citations for Best Revival, three for performers Matt Doyle, Patti LuPone, and Jennifer Simard, Best Director for Marianne Elliott, and four others.

Glaringly absent from this well-deserved list, though, is star Katrina Lenk, who plays the musical’s central character Bobbie; Elliott has reimagined the piece with a woman at the fore. If this snub seems egregious, it’s one that productions of “Company” past have had to contend with before.

See the complete list of 2022 Tony Awards nominees

Just as Bobby and Bobbie are notoriously unlucky in love, the character has never been particularly lucky with Tony nominators, dating way back to 1971. The very...

Will Brandon J. Dirden be the latest to earn Tony nomination after doing two shows in one season
Image
The 2021-2022 Broadway season has been quite a busy one for actor Brandon J. Dirden. First he appeared opposite Phylicia Rashad in Manhattan Theatre Club’s presentation of Dominique Morisseau‘s play “Skeleton Crew” this past winter. Now he can be seen in Second Stage Theater’s revival of Richard Greenberg‘s 2003 Tony-winning play “Take Me Out.” After having previously appeared in award-winning Broadway productions of “Clybourne Park” (2012), “All the Way” (2014), and “Jitney” (2017), will either of Dirden’s two main stem appearances from this past year make him a first-time Tony nominee?

In “Skeleton Crew,” Dirden played Reggie, the manager of one of the last auto stamping plants in Detroit. The company is on shaky ground and the workers have to make choices about how to move forward if their plant goes under. All the while Reggie is torn between doing right by his work family and the red tape in his office.

3 classic roles that never won Tony Awards could break the curse this year
Image
In this year’s Tony Awards race for Best Actress in a Musical, there are three classic roles that have been nominated before, but haven’t won: Bobbie in “Company,” Caroline Thibodeaux in “Caroline, or Change,” and Fanny Brice in “Funny Girl.” Can any of them finally prevail this time?

See‘Hangmen’ could finally earn Martin McDonagh a long awaited Tony Award for Best Play

As of this writing Sharon D. Clarke is the front-runner according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users with 9/2 odds. In “Caroline, or Change,” she played Caroline Thibodeaux, a 39-year-old African-American maid and a single mother of four working for a middle-class Jewish family in Louisiana back in 1963. For the original Broadway production back in 2004, Tonya Pinkins was the odds-on favorite to win Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as the title character. In what was considered to be a hotly contested race that year,...

‘Company’ reimagined revival honors the late Stephen Sondheim’s ‘indelible’ score
Image
Over fifty years after its debut on Broadway in 1970, Stephen Sondheim’s genre-redefining musical “Company” has returned in a reimagined production by Tony Award-winning director Marianne Elliott. The classic musical is a series of vignettes that coalesce around its protagonist Bobby on the occasion of his thirty-fifth birthday, but in this revival the main character is now a female Bobbie. “Company” opened at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Dec. 9.

Tony winner Katrina Lenk steps into the role of Bobbie, previously played on Broadway by the likes of Dean Jones, Larry Kert, Boyd Gaines, and Raúl Esparza. Her Joanne – the character known for singing the sardonic Sondheim showstopper “The Ladies Who Lunch” – is two-time Tony winner Patti LuPone. The ensemble boasts a number of Broadway staples, including Nikki Renée Daniels, Matt Doyle, Tony nominees Christopher Fitzgerald, Christopher Sieber, and Jennifer Simard, plus others. George Furth contributed the original book.

The Goldfinch Trailer: Ansel Elgort & Nicole Kidman Star in Long-Awaited Adaptation
Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for The Goldfinch. This is the long-awaited adaptation of Donna Tartt's highly acclaimed, best-selling novel of the same name, which was awarded the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Now, Warner Bros. has partnered with Amazon Studios to bring it to the big screen with an absolutely stacked cast. Based on this first trailer, it looks like this could instantly be an Oscar favorite coming down the pipeline later this year. Get the tissues ready, because this looks absolutely intense.

The trailer itself is cut beautifully and is loaded down with striking imagery. While seemingly not giving too much away, it manages to be incredibly compelling. We see a lot of Baby Driver star Ansel Elgort, who plays the lead character Theo, as well as Nicole Kidman, who has really been on a roll lately. There are plenty of rattling moments of heartbreak and intense emotion,...

It was his second feature ever, and it came sandwiched right between This is Spinal Tap and Stand By Me. It's a brilliant, character-driven script with two great leads in John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga. It elevates '80s sex comedy material to some endearing levels, and the whole movie has aged remarkably well. Highly, highly recommended if...

When we think of the rise of the teen sex comedy in the current movie generation the focus easily moves to American Pie and maybe even Superbad. The brashness and move against being controlled by the ratings system pushed the boundaries of what could be included on-screen. Looking back to the eighties though there was a movie that arguably created the blueprint from which these films would work from. That film was Bob Clark’s Porky’s.

Set in 1954 we see a group of high school kids from Florida, trying to find the best way to get their friend Pee-Wee (Dan Monahan) laid, and finally “lose his cherry”. With a few disastrous failures under their belt,...

Touching upon much of his internationally regarded iconography as well as looking ahead to current and future endeavors, Jones eloquently expresses his observations on acting, art, humanity and life itself. Focusing on the ScreenVision presentation of Alfred Uhry's Driving Miss Daisy starring opposite fellow icon and InDepth InterView participant Dame Angela Lansbury, Jones astutely outlines the themes of the touching Southern drama depicting the unlikely friendship between an uptight society woman and her dedicated chauffer as well as opens up about his own experiences with culture clashes and race in his life. Additionally, Jones juxtaposes his observations of working alongside...

Fund This Film: ‘No Pay, Nudity’ Features an All-Star Cast of Non-Stars (Like Brent Spiner)
I’m not exactly sure what I’m selling here. At first I thought No Pay, Nudity was a documentary about actors. I thought Laurie Metcalf, Nathan Lane, Ted Levine and others were appearing to talk about the positives and negatives of their profession. Then I thought maybe they were at least playing themselves in the movie. After watching the Kickstarter campaign video I don’t know what the finished result will be. It has a scrip by Ethan Sandler (Whitney… wait, don’t go away yet), so it’s fictional. And in addition to the actors already mentioned, the huge ensemble on board includes Lewis Black, Brent Spiner, Jessica Hecht, Austin Pendleton, Boyd Gaines, Mark Blum, Peter Jacobsen and many more whose face you’d recognize before their name. It’s basically a movie full of “that guy” non-stars. But not Curtis Armstrong, apparently, though he does show up in the campaign video. I...

Do Stage Actors Have A Future On TV?
Anjelica Huston, Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Christian Borle, Leslie Odom Jr., Jennifer Hudson, Katharine McPhee, Megan Hilty, Jeremy Jordan, Krysta Rodriguez, and Andy Mientus in Smash (2012)
New York — The slow, lingering demise of "Smash" has felt more like a punch to the gut to the folks on Broadway.

The TV series about the making of a big stage musical came with a flurry of attention and some big names: Steven Spielberg, Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston. It was going to be a valentine to Broadway.

Sometimes, though, love letters get sent back.

After a first season with a healthy-sized audience averaging 7.7 million viewers, it returned this year to such dismal ratings it was banished to Saturday night. It won't be back for a third season.

But while TV was finally focusing on Broadway, plenty of stage veterans jumped to TV during the two-year run of "Smash." Some flamed out, some are holding on and some still hope:

_ Three-time Tony winner Sutton Foster's show about ballerinas, "Bunheads," has been picked up for a second season on ABC Family.

Daphne Du Maurier
This Week on Stage: Paul Rudd and Michael Shannon in 'Grace'
Daphne Du Maurier
The theater season has just begun, but it’s already claimed its first Broadway casualty. Producers scuttled plans for a musical version of the Daphne du Maurier novel Rebecca, which was to open this fall, but failed to secure all of its $12 million budget amid reports of phantom investors, sabotage, and fateful producer inexperience. Not all of the drama was backstage, however, with several high-profile productions making their debuts with (mostly) mixed critical response:

Grace: Despite some terrific performances by Broadway newbies Michael Shannon and Kate Arrington, I found Craig Wright’s dramedy to be “glibly funny and flawed” in...

A New Broadway Season, A New Set of Tony Hopefuls
By Sam Negin

Theater Editor & Columnist

***

A new Broadway season is about to begin and, with it, new life has been brought to my posts. After over 900 posts, 50 comments, over 325 Tony nominees and over 75 winners in the two-and-a-half years I blogged independently about the Tony Awards, I am proud to be joining the team at ScottFeinberg.com.

Without any further ado, I would like to begin with a look ahead at the Broadway shows that will be coming up this year. I have made this list as comprehensive as I could given what information is available but, as is often the case, there is much more data available right now about the fall season (September through the winter holidays) than the spring season (Christmas through the Tony Awards in June) on Broadway. I will update this post with more details as information becomes available.

The list of shows we expect to see this year,...

News Nuggets: Who are Grammy contenders for Album of the Year?
Cheyenne Jackson
Cheyenne Jackson withdraws from Tony nominating committee: "The actor has had to recuse himself from nominating duties now that he will star in the new Broadway play 'The Performers' this fall. Previously announced committee members Boyd Gaines (who will star in 'An Enemy of the People') and director Pam MacKinnon ('Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?') will also not serve on the board. No replacements have been named at this time." Broadway.Com BAFTA adds news writing category to its awards: "BAFTA is to introduce separate prizes for comedy and drama writers at its annual craft awards, following pressure from the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain. Up until now, BAFTA has only awarded a best writer award at its television craft awards ceremony, meaning drama writers have been pitted against comedy creators. Last year, the guild began discussions with BAFTA to address this issue. Today, the union has...
