'A Breed Apart' Directors Explain Their "Different" Approach to "Unofficial" Wes Craven Sequel
Image
It's been 10 years since Wes Craven passed, but his legacy lives on. The horror master helmed a number of classics, from A Nightmare on Elm Street to Scream, and he also served as producer on countless other "scary movies." More recently, there was The Breed (2006), a creature feature set in an island cabin and centered around ravenous dogs. Now, almost two decades later, the sequel A Breed Apartis being released to the masses courtesy of Lionsgate and helmed by Griff and Nathan Furst. MovieWeb recently spoke with the filmmaker brothers to learn more about their uniquely meta follow-up to The Breed, which, as you'll find out, incorporates the actual production of the Craven-produced 2006 film into the plot itself.

"It's an unofficial sequel, and the reason why is, it was actually originally pitched to us. We didn't come up with the idea. One of the executive producers, which is the international financier,...

A Breed Apart Movie Review: A Fast-Paced Thrill Ride That Falls Short Of Emotional And Narrative Depth
Image
Man versus beast—the tussle traces back to primordial times. Human beings have staked their claim on planet Earth and pushed the animals to live on the sidelines, but what if they retaliated right back at us? A Breed Apart explores how dangerously lives could be affected if compassionate, domestic creatures like dogs turned on us one day. The film makes us question the loyalty and domestication of animals, asking if nurture can really win out against the nature of the predators and whether we are truly in control of the creatures we claim to tame. Directed by Griff and Nathan Furst, the film is an adrenaline rush of one and a half hours that puts humans in a dangerous survival game in front of an island full of rabid dogs.

A Breed Apart literally signifies the rabid breed of dogs that inhabits Vince’s private island, Vincetopia—a sort...

A Breed Apart Review – Absurdity Unleashed
Image
When I was twenty-years-old I watched The Breed, a cheesy killer dog movie starring Michelle Rodriguez at the height of her popularity. By no stretch of the imagination was it a “good” movie, but nearly twenty years later I still remember it. It’s the type of mind-numbing popcorn flick that goes great with an extra cheese pizza and a cold refreshing beer. It’s not the type of movie that I’d ever imagined would get a sequel, especially not nearly two decades later. While A Breed Apart isn’t exactly a direct follow-up to its predecessor, it maintains the absurdity of the original while doubling down on the comedy.

The plot

A movie set is abandoned when the canine actors unexpectedly contract rabies and attack their animal handlers. The dogs are left to freely roam the island until several years later when a group of influencers are called...

Interview: Grace Caroline Currey Talks A Breed Apart’s Humor and Calls for Her To Be the Next Wonder Woman
Image
Grace Caroline Currey is no stranger to film audiences. She starred as Carol in Annabelle: Creation, Becky in Fall, and Mary Bromfield in DC’s Shazam! films. Now, she takes on the role of Violet in the barking-mad A Breed Apart, from directors Griff and Nathan Furst. Fortress of Solitude chatted to Currey about A Breed Apart, which can best be described as Jurassic Park with rabid dogs hunting down social media influencers. She spoke about what attracted her to the part, the most ridiculous scenes from the movie, and the Wonder Woman fan art calling for her to be the next Amazon warrior in the DC Universe. Fortress of Solitude: Why A Breed Apart? What was it about this specific movie that drew you to it? Grace Caroline Currey: I’ve played a lot of characters where I was crying almost the whole movie – specifically in Fall – and it...

'A Breed Apart's Grace Caroline Currey and Riele Downs Face a Wes Craven-Inspired Horror in New Image [Exclusive]
Image
One of Wes Craven's cult classics is getting a spiritual successor this summer in the form of A Breed Apart. Written and directed by The Furst Brothers, the survival horror comedy puts a new spin on 2006's The Breed, a film produced by the legendary Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream director that starred Michelle Rodriguez and followed a group of college kids on a "deserted" island where dogs were bred to kill. The new feature modernizes the concept, instead centering on a private island retreat where a group of social media influencers are confronted with man-eating beasts and forced into a deadly fight for survival that pits them against one another. We're excited to include the chilling survival flick as part of Collider's Exclusive Preview event for summer movies and share a new image highlighting two of the stars who will be thrown to the hounds on...

Image
Hayden Panettiere (Scream VI) is digging back into her horror roots with Collider’s exclusive first look at Lionsgate’s A Breed Apart. Hayden Panettiere Joins ‘A Breed Apart’ As Survival Movie Based On Cult Wes Craven Film Rounds Out Cast
Image
Exclusive: Hayden Panettiere will star in A Breed Apart. Known for playing Claire Bennet in Heroes, Kirby Reed in slasher franchise Scream and Juliette Barnes in Nashville, Panettiere will take an as yet unspecified role in the film, which uses Wes Craven’s cult 2006 picture The Breed as a jump-off point.

In addition to Panettiere signing on, Deadline can also reveal the film has rounded out its ensemble cast.

Joey Bragg, Troy Gentile, Riele Downs and Page Kennedy will all appear. They join the previously announced Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey, who were seen together in vertigo-inducing Netflix movie Fall.

Billed as a reimagining of Wes Craven-produced and Nicholas Mastandrea-directed The Breed, the upcoming movie is more accurately a sequel of sorts and is set after events of the first film. The new picture originally bore the same name, but the title has now been tweaked.

The plot...

All Eyes on Aaron Paul & "Drool-Worthy" Stars at Need For Speed Premiere
"The action and the cars," as Matt Lanter from CW's "Star-Crossed" put it, are what everyone was excited about at the premiere of Need for Speed. Both car lovers and gamers who've enjoyed the "Need for Speed" videogame knew they would feel like kids in a candy store.

For Gilles Marini (ABC Family's "Switched at Birth") and his son George, watching the flick was just some good father-son time. "We bond all the time," says Gilles. "You know I'm a dude, he's another dude, we just want to watch a good movie."

The action scenes should be especially intense, considering the stars performed all of their own stunts. When Aaron Paul heard that was the plan, he thought "it was incredibly brave. I also thought the director was out of his mind."

No one was more celebrated than Aaron Paul by everyone walking the red carpet. There was not...
