He was a writer and actor, known for Gandhi (1982), Mon nom est Tsotsi (2005) and The Guest: An Episode in the Life of Eugène Marais (1977). He was married to Dr. Paula Fourie and Sheila Fugard. He died on 8 March 2025 in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa.
