All of Netflix's nominations ever in big six categories of the Academy Awards
Image
Netflix produced its first non-documentary feature in 2015. It was called Beasts of No Nation, and it was fine. However, the film did not get nominated for an Academy Award. Lots has changed in the last decade.

Your favorite streamer often gets nominated for major awards each year. 2025 is no different. Emilia Pérez has 13 nominations alone, including one for Best Picture. So far, Netflix has yet to get a win in that category, and Emilia Pérez is not the favorite this year, either.

In fact, Netflix has also almost been entirely shut out of wins in the acting categories. Only Laura Dern won, and that was for Best Supporting Actress in 2020. But the streamer does do well in some other categories. Those might not be part of the Big 6, but when it comes to documentaries, Netflix knows what it is doing. Just see below, and you'll know.

The 2025 Oscars will be held on Sunday,...

The Netflix western “The Power of the Dog” entered these awards with a leading 12 nominations, which is also the most nominations any Netflix film has ever received. But was it destined to become the first film from a streaming distributor to take top honors? To achieve that the film had to battle against Apple’s “Coda,” which only had three nominations but won crucial awards from the Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild, and Producers Guild, the last of which uses the same kind of ranked-choice voting as the Oscars.

As predicted, Jane Campion won the Best Director Oscar during Sunday’s 94th Academy Awards ceremony for her intricate work on the psychological neo-western “The Power of the Dog.” (See the complete Oscars winners list.) Campion is now the third female to win the directing prize following Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland” (2020) just last year and Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker” (2009) a dozen years ago. Oscars 2022: Jane Campion Wins Best Director, Making Her Third Female Winner Ever
Image
It’s a fitting end for an extended awards season that so often saw “The Power of the Dog” director Jane Campion running off with award after award: The Kiwi filmmaker has won the Oscar for Best Director for her work on the lauded Western drama. The award makes Campion only the third woman to pick up the accolade; she follows Chloé Zhao’s win last year for her “Nomadland” and the first female winner, Kathryn Bigelow, who won for 2009’s “The Hurt Locker.” During an emotional speech, she thanked her cast, crew, family, and Netflix, along with the Academy for “the lifetime honor.”

Campion faced off against Kenneth Branagh, Ryuske Hamaguchi, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Steven Spielberg in the stacked category. Campion and Spielberg were previously nominated together in the category back in 1991.

Oscar nominee profile: Jane Campion (‘The Power of the Dog’) would be 3rd woman to win Best Director
Image
Nearly three decades ago, Jane Campion made history as the second female Best Director Oscar nominee after Lina Wertmüller. The film that brought her this recognition was 1993’s “The Piano,” for which she ended up winning Best Original Screenplay. In the time since, Kathryn Bigelow has blazed a trail as the first woman to win the directing prize, and Chloe Zhao followed in her footsteps just last year. Campion’s current nomination for helming “The Power of the Dog” establishes her as the only woman with two in the category and could lead to its first instance of back-to-back female victories.

PGA Awards cliffhanger: Will a streaming service finally win Best Picture?
Image
The Producers Guild of America Awards will be held on March 19, honoring the best achievements in TV and film production, and since the Oscar for Best Picture goes to the producers, the PGA’s Best Theatrical Motion Picture award is one of the best hints we get into what the Oscars might do, especially since both awards decide Best Picture with the same kind of preferential ballot. This year both the PGA Awards and the Oscars could do something they’ve never done before: honor a streaming movie.

Final Oscars Predictions: Lady Gaga, Will Smith and Other A-Listers Expected to Land Noms
Image
Ballots are in, and the nail-biting portion of Oscar season has begun. Nominations for the 94th Academy Awards will be revealed on Feb. 8.

Another jam-packed phase one offered plenty of twists and turns, along with much speculation and reading of tea leaves. Now, that many of the guilds have weighed in, we’re predicting Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” will lead the way with 10 nominations, while Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” are expected to pick up an impressive nine nods each. Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast,” the presumed frontrunner for best picture, is expected to score a healthy seven mentions (or eight if Jamie Dornan can make the cut alongside his co-star Ciarán Hinds).

With an increasingly global Academy, it’s important to consider the tastes of international members that aren’t working on studio lots in Hollywood. While you can argue...

Producers Guild Award Nominations Tip the Oscar Best Picture Race, Honor ‘Squid Game,’ New TV
Image
The Producers Guild of America (PGA) has announced nominations in the Motion Pictures and Television categories for the 33rd Annual Producers Guild Awards, which will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at the Fairmont Century Plaza.

The PGA is a sturdy bellwether for the likely nominees for the Best Picture Oscar, which will be a guaranteed ten this year. This opens up the field to more adventurous choices. While ABC is rooting for a global blockbuster like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” to gain a Best Picture slot, it is not listed by the more mainstream PGA. Since its inception, the PGA has predicted 22 of the past 32 winners of the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Additionally, the PGA has extended the the voting window for select categories. Final ballots for TV and Film will now close on March 8; Final Ballots for Children’s, Short Form and Sports Programs will remain on their...

PGA Nominees: Netflix Dominates While ‘Being the Ricardos’ Surprises
Image
The Producers Guild of America announced its nominations for the motion picture and television categories for the upcoming 33rd PGA Awards, and it was a good day for the streamers (once again).

Netflix ruled the film side with three films landing in the field of 10 nominees: “Don’t Look Up” from Adam McKay, “The Power of the Dog” from Jane Campion and “Tick, Tick … Boom!” from Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Warner Bros. captured two nods from its slate: “Dune” from Denis Villeneuve and “King Richard” from Reinaldo Marcus Green.

At the best possible moment with Oscar voting opening today, Amazon Studios’ “Being the Ricardos” from Aaron Sorkin snagged one of the coveted spots, which helps its best picture chances considerably.

Some of the omissions were pronounced, most notably Apple Original Films’ “The Tragedy of Macbeth” from Joel Coen missing out on a nod, even though the heartwarming “Coda” made it into the lineup.

Judi Dench, Ciarán Hinds, Jude Hill, Lewis McAskie, Caitríona Balfe, and Jamie Dornan in Belfast (2021)
Producers Guild Nominees Range From ‘Belfast’ and ‘Coda’ to ‘Dune’
Judi Dench, Ciarán Hinds, Jude Hill, Lewis McAskie, Caitríona Balfe, and Jamie Dornan in Belfast (2021)
The busiest single day of film nominations in many years kicked off on Thursday with the Producers Guild of America announcing its nominees for the best-produced films of 2021, a slate of films that ranged from indies like “Belfast” and “Coda” to the bigger budget extravaganzas “Dune” and “West Side Story.”

Also on the list: “Being the Ricardos,” “Don’t Look Up,” “King Richard,” “Licorice Pizza,” “The Power of the Dog” and “tick, tick…Boom!”

Conspicuously missing from the PGA’s list were the Covid-wracked year’s biggest blockbuster, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and the James Bond film “No Time to Die,” as well as “Nightmare Alley,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth” and “House of Gucci.”

Netflix landed three nominations with “Don’t Look Up,” “The Power of the Dog” and “tick, tick…Boom!” while Warner Bros. took two with “Dune” and “King Richard.” Other companies represented were Focus (“Belfast”), Apple (“Coda”), MGM (“Licorice Pizza...

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ ‘Don’t Look Up’ Aim to Increase Best Picture Chances With Guild Noms
Image
A tsunami of buzz and Oscar-telling indicators drop on Thursday, with the major guilds announcing award nominations. The Directors Guild of America (DGA), Writers Guild of America (WGA), Producers Guild of America (PGA) and American Cinema Editors (Ace Eddies) all serve as critical barometers for the Academy Awards, especially in the race for best picture.

DGA has averaged four of their five nominees landing in the Oscars’ best director category, including last year with Aaron Sorkin (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) getting bumped for Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”). The first-time directors’ category, with the exception of Jordan Peele for “Get Out” (2017), has gone on to get a nod at the Academy.

The PGA always provides some big blockbusters and Academy flare, which bodes well for either “No Time to Die” or “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” The WGA has a lot of ineligibilities that won’t provide a strong enough indicator for the screenplay categories.

‘The Power of the Dog’: Why Jane Campion Will Become the Third Woman to Win the Directing Oscar
Image
Editor’s Note: The following story contains spoilers for “The Power of the Dog.”

Jane Campion is enjoying this moment. After winning the Silver Lion for directing at Venice for “The Power of the Dog,” her triumphant return to feature films after 13 years, and soaking up the New York Film Festival applause at Alice Tully Hall, the director settles into a soft sofa at Netflix’s after-party at Tavern on the Green. She had taken a detour from moviemaking to create eight episodes of Sundance TV’s lauded series “Top of the Lake” (2013-2017), which starred Elisabeth Moss and Holly Hunter, back home in New Zealand. Campion smiles as she tells me about the fun she’s having creating marketing materials for “The Power of the Dog” with Netflix, which won the hardboiled 1920s western in a bidding war at Cannes 2019, before production began in January 2020 in remote Central Otago,...

Benedict Cumberbatch Teases Wes Anderson Team-Up & Next ‘Doctor Strange’ Film After Earning Seventh SAG Award Nom For ‘The Power Of The Dog’
Image
After landing a SAG Award nomination this morning for his work in Jane Campion’s Netflix Western The Power of the Dog, Benedict Cumberbatch spoke with Deadline about his recently-announced, first collaboration with Wes Anderson on a Netflix adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, as well as the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Cumberbatch, who is playing the title character in Anderson’s latest, said he is “over the moon” about the opportunity to work with the filmmaker, with production set to start soon, and also “a little bit nervous” as he is before every job. “[Anderson’s] greatness is a fact. He’s wonderful. What a rewarding director for audiences, for actors—the style, the work, the aesthetic, and also the heart and soul of him,” he opined. “It’s a marvelous time and a very different experience I imagine from working with Jane,...

Hear Two Tracks From Netflix’s ‘The Power of the Dog’ Score by Jonny Greenwood (Exclusive)
Image
Variety can exclusive debut two of the ominous tracks from Netflix’s highly anticipated film “The Power of the Dog,” one of the leading contenders for the Oscars this awards season. The songs, composed by Jonny Greenwood, digitally release on Oct. 26.

The two tracks, titled “25 Years” and “West,” show the range of Greenwood’s composition on the western drama from director and Oscar-winning screenwriter Jane Campion. Lakeshore Records and Invada Records will release “The Power of the Dog — Music From the Netflix Film” on Nov. 17 on CD and vinyl.

Uniquely distinct from one another, Greenwood’s choices have always been diverse in tone and what it calls upon the viewer to feel in particular scenes. His stylistic experiments have been well-documented throughout his composing career, but his choices in Campion’s film may be his most accessible for conventional orchestral enthusiasts. He shows his gift for infectious melodies on the track for “25 Years,...

Jane Campion wins Silver Lion in Venice
Image
Jane Campion has won the Silver Lion Award for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival for The Power of the Dog.

The auteur’s first feature in 12 years, based on the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage, premiered at the festival to a four-minute standing ovation.

An Australian-New Zealand co-production, it has been hailed by critics, and is already generating Oscar buzz.

Set in the 1920s, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons play brothers Phil and George Burbank, who own the biggest ranch in the Montana valley.

When George secretly marries local widow Rose (Kirsten Dunst), a shocked and angry Phil wages a relentless war to destroy her, using her effeminate son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee) as a pawn.

Campion is the only the second woman to have ever won Venice’s director prize since it was introduced in 1990 and given annually since 1998; the first being Shirin Neshat in 2009 for Women Without Men.

Jane Campion Talks About ‘The Power of the Dog’ and the Myth of the Sensitive Cowboy
Image
Before shooting “The Power of the Dog” back at the start of 2020, Jane Campion kept having crazy dreams. “I’ve had this terrible fear of being on this big black horse and trying to go down this little lane on this cliff,” she said. “The horse was very testy. And I was proud to be on such an exciting animal, but I didn’t really know it at all. I was going down this trail, it’s getting smaller and smaller. And I can see we can’t fit here. And we can’t get back because this horse and I don’t know each other, I can’t get it to go back. ‘This is certain death.’ Then I woke up.”

Campion faced her fears with a woman who “facilitates a dialogue between yourself and your dreams and work,” she said. “She’s a genius. Most people are just too scared to do it.
