Flavio Frederico was born on May 23, 1969, in Rio de Janeiro. He studied Architecture and Cinema at the University of São Paulo (USP). Since 1988 has worked in several areas, such as photography, television and cinema. In 1992, he made his first film at the University of Sao Paulo (USP), "Nazareno" (17 min, 35mm). From 1993 to 1997 he was the coordinator of the studio of 02 Filmes, where he produced his second short film, "Vencido(Expired)" (1996/13min, 35mm). The film was very successful in several international festivals. In 1998, he co-produced his third short film, "Todo dia Todo(Day to Day)" with Superfilmes. The film was very well received internationally and won awards in Spain (Bilbao and Barcelona), Italy (Montecatini), the United States (San Francisco), Denmark (Odense) and Germany (Munich). In Brazil, it won awards at the Bahia "Jornada de Cinema" and the Rio Festival. He was also among the official selections of the New York/98 Film Festival, Sundance/99, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Mannheim-Heidelberg, Brussels and Biarritz. In 1999, he concluded his first documentary film, the short "Copacabana" (35mm), which was awarded at the Gramado Festival/99, International "It's All True" Documentary Festival, Brasília Festival, Recife Festival, and Curitiba Festival. On the international scene, it was at Rotterdam, Oberhausen, Vila do Conde, Drama, Bristol, and London Film Festival/00. In 2000, he was the assistant director of the award-winning series of ten TV documentaries "O Povo Brasileiro(The Brazilian People)" (GNT/Cultura), having directed the shooting of 4 episodes. That same year, he released his fifth short film, "Pormenores(Details)" (35mm), which was awarded as one of the five best short films of the year by the Ministry of Culture. It was chosen for important international short film festivals, such as Tampere (Finland) and Aspen (USA). His first feature length film, "Urbânia" (35mm), a docdrama with a script which won the Hupert Bauls Fund support from the Netherlands, was released in 2001, and received awards at Gramado and the Bahia Jornada in Brazil. The film was very well received internationally, and was screened at the festivals of Rotterdam, Montreal, Mannheim-Heidelberg, It's All True, NY Latin Beat, Mar del Plata and others. In 2002, he made another short, "Ofusca(The Beetle)"(35mm), premiered at Oberhausen Film Festival, with a script that received an incentive award for shorts in Brazil. The film was awarded in Portugal (Santa Maria da Feira) and in the brazilian festivals of Recife and Cuiabá. He also made the executive production of three feature films: his "Urbania"(2001); the Murilo Salle's feature film; "Seja o que Deus quiser"(2002) and Lirio Ferreira's new film "Árido Movie"(2003/04). Since 2004 he's been working with documentaries for tv as "Serra(Ridge)"(2003/Betacam) premiered at the 2004 It's All True Film Festival. Now he has just finished the documentary "São Paulo-portraits of the world"(2003/Betacam), produced by Dezembro, as a part of the oficial calendar of the 450th anyversary of São Paulo and is working in other two: "Quilombo" and "Caparaó".
