Hannibal’s Most Overlooked Star Replaced Damian Lewis in George Clooney’s Acclaimed Franchise
Image
Across its three seasons, Hannibal had many talented actors. From Mads Mikkelsen, who gave the performance of his lifetime, to Hugh Dancy, who excellently understood Will Graham, and even Laurence Fishburne, who performed as Jack Crawford, the show knew how to do its casting.

While most of the show’s actors prefer staying in the indie scene, shying away from flashy films, there are a few who balance the two worlds very well. Although Mikkelsen would be the first example of the latter category, there is another actor who also fits but didn’t get to star in the series for long.

Even though Richard Armitage only starred in the six episodes of the show as the Great Red Dragon, his presence was certainly impactful.

All 6 Oscars The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers Was Nominated For
Image
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers may be considered the worst of Peter Jackson's initial trilogy, but it still earned a significant number of Oscar nominations. Much of The Two Towers' legacy is underwhelming only by comparison, but few would ever say that it is not a magnificent movie. The Lord of the Rings timeline is essentially a single, very long adventure, as this is how J. R. R. Tolkien wrote the source material. The result is that the individual movies do not differ much in tone.

While The Two Towers isn't favorably compared to the installments that preceded and followed it, the sequel also faced significant competition from other movies at the 75th Academy Awards. This was a year when one of the best movie musicals to win Best Picture arose, as well as another Martin Scorsese crime drama. Therefore, a handful of movies competed...

Twister Actors Reunite for Sock Monster Horror Comedy
Image
Nearly 30 years after first appearing onscreen together in the 1996 box office smash hit Twister, actors Sean Whalen and Alan Ruck have reunited for a new horror comedy called Crust.

According to Dread Central, Whalen describes Crust as a take on The Little Shop Of Horrors (the 1960 original) mixed with Willard. Crust is both written and directed by Whalen, marking his directorial debut. Whalen, known for his roles in cult classics like Wes Craven's The People Under the Stairs, now being remade by Jordan Peele, steps behind the camera for the first time. The film is co-written by Jim Wald, and is notably the first official theatrical release under the recently revived Anchor Bay Entertainment.

Twister Director Reveals the Reason He Dismissed Sequel Pitches
Image
Twister was such a massive hit that it had the promise of a successful franchise. Director Jan de Bont explains why a sequel to his film would have explored an absurd narrative.

Twisters' premiere is tracking to repeat the box-office success of the 1996 original, which was such a surprise hit that it blew the studios' expectations. The film even gained a fan base eager for a follow-up, with Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt's characters out for new adventures. Twisters is poised to deliver on that promise 30 years after, but it's neither a direct sequel nor a reboot of the original. In an interview with /Film, Twister director Jan de Bont said they explored sequel pitches, but he personally thought the film was meant to be a one-time thing.

'The Fact That It Holds Up Is Amazing:' Twister's Helen Hunt Shares Her Thoughts on Movie's Legacy
Image
The 1996 disaster film Twister recently got a 4K Ultra HD upgrade. To celebrate the new format release, the movie's star, Helen Hunt, shared her thoughts on the classic film's staying power and the success it achieved when it was released.

"It's fun [to see Twister having a moment]. There [are] two key actors who aren't with us anymore who did it with me, so I wish they were here, and there was some kind of all-get-together version of it," Hunt told Entertainment Weekly. "Some people will say, 'Did you know at the time...?' And the answer is almost always 'no,' you don't know that a movie's going to be a success."

At NRA Fraud Trial, Jury Hears About Concerns Over Oliver North’s Secret $1 Million Contract & Fight With CEO Wayne Lapierre
Image
On Wednesday, jurors in the National Rifle Association fraud trial in Manhattan heard testimony about a secret $1 million-per-year contract that was paid to NRA President Oliver North in 2018. The contract was not disclosed to the board of directors.

Previous NRA presidents had been unpaid, so the contract raised eyebrows internally.

North butted heads with NRA CEO Wayne Lapierre, and North resigned abruptly in April 2019, alleging that there were financial improprieties at the nonprofit group.

During a board meeting in Irving, Texas, Lapierre announced his departure from the gun rights group a few weeks ago.

The 74-year-old cited health reasons for his decision.

Lapierre is a co-defendant along with the NRA in a case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James after accusing the organization of corruption. James is seeking to disband the group and make it pay financial penalties.

James claims that Lapierre has used millions of dollars from...

Academy SciTech Awards Make a “Triumphant Return” As Lens Designer Iain Neil Accepts Oscar
Image
After 40 years in Hollywood, veteran lens and optical systems designer Iain Neil received a standing ovation as he accepted the Gordon E. Sawyer Award, an Oscar statuette, Friday evening at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Scientific and Technical Awards presentation.

This capped a celebratory gathering of the close-knit entertainment technology community, where 20 innovators were honored during a ceremony in the Geffen Theater at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. At her first SciTech Awards ceremony and the first in-person SciTech presentation since 2019, Academy president Janet Yang opened the show, noting that the Museum was “a fitting venue for our triumphant return.” She told the SciTech community, “I’m in awe of the work you do.”

Due to the stormy L.A. weather, the buffet dinner and after-party were moved from the Dolby Family Terrace to the 5th-floor tea room — and appropriately, the first honorees of the evening...

The Rescue (2020)
Check Out the Larger Than Life Special Effects and a Behind The Scenes Look at The Upcoming Film The Rescue
The Rescue (2020)
Hong Kong’s highest grossing director, Dante Lam, will soon be releasing his next action-packed film, “The Rescue“. Arriving in theaters just in time for the holiday season, the film chronicles a Chinese rescue team’s death-defying mission to save survivors of a fiery offshore catastrophe. Comprised of men of women from various backgrounds and led by a maverick captain (played by heartthrob and action star Eddie Peng), the unit must set aside their differences to face escalating challenges across air, land and sea. In addition to Peng, the film’s ensemble cast includes Xin Zhilei (Crosscurrent) and Wang Yanlin (Operation Red Sea).

The Rescue is, to date, the largest Chinese film production set at sea. Many water scenes were filmed at Mexico’s Baja Studios facilities, which was first built in 1996 for James Cameron when he filmed his epic “Titanic.” The Rescue used the studios’ largest tank, which has...

The Big Reveal: New York’s Attorney General Suing To Dissolve The NRA
Image
New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit on Thursday to dissolve the National Rifle Association, accusing the powerful gun rights lobby of engaging in a pattern of self-dealing to benefit its leaders.

In the hours before her press conference, there was wild speculation of what she planned, as her office had informed members of the media of a pending “major national announcement.”

The lawsuit — read it here — singles out the longtime leader of the NRA, Wayne Lapierre, as well as current and former senior executives Wilson “Woody” Phillips, Joshua Powell and John Frazier. The suit claims that Lapierre has diverted millions of dollars away from the charitable mission of the organization, at the cost of core services like gun safety, education and training. Among other things, the lawsuit claims that Lapierre and his associates used NRA reserves for personal use, including trips to the Bahamas, private jets and expensive meals.

Oscars: ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Wins Best Animated Feature
In a major validation for Sony and Marvel, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” has won the Academy Award for animated feature for Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

While accepting the award, Lord celebrated what the representation in the movie meant for many. “When we hear that somebody’s kid was watching the movie and turned to them and said, ‘He looks like me,’ or ‘They speak Spanish like us,’ we feel like we already won.”

Sunday’s win capped a strong awards season run for the film, which won the top animated film honor at the Annies, Golden Globes, BAFTA and Producers Guild Awards. It’s one of the biggest awards to date for a title based on Marvel characters, along with “Big Hero 6,” which also won the animated feature trophy in 2015.

Oscar-Nominated Film Series: Third Harry Potter Movie a Major Letdown. Is CGI Enough to Create On-Screen Magic?
'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' poster. With Daniel Radcliffe. Rupert Grint. Emma Watson. 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' quiz question: Does state-of-the-art CGI equal movie magic? (Oscar Movie Series) Alfonso Cuarón seems like an odd choice for director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third installment in the Harry Potter movie series. That is, if one thinks only of Cuarón's pre-Harry Potter sleeper hit, the François Truffaut-esque Y tu mamá también, while ignoring two of his earlier efforts, the critically acclaimed A Little Princess and the moderately respected Great Expectations. This time around, working with a reported $130 million budget (approx. $163 million in 2015), state-of-the-art special effects, and the Harry Potter franchise, Cuarón surely could do no wrong. At the box office, that is. For although Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is stylistically superior to Chris Columbus' previous work in the series,...

Tech Support: Visual effects Oscar race features apes, raccoons and 'Interstellar'
John Frazier
The Best Visual Effects is often the place where the Academy recognizes what it is frequently accused of avoiding elsewhere: mainstream spectacle. Blockbusters reign in this category, at least at the nomination stage, with fantasy films, franchises and other money-makers always featuring prominently. The branch also has its specific fetishes, at least historically (talking animals immediately jumps to mind), though, in recent years, it has seemingly been all 3D, all the time. There are dozens if not hundreds of individuals who work on a film’s visual effects but the nomination can ultimately be shared by only four of them – usually the special effects supervisor and three visual effects supervisors. While some names are "favorites" of the branch (John Frazier, Joe Letteri), this branch is hardly the most insular and tends to be more concerned about the work on display. We will receive a hint of the way they are...

List of 2014 Oscar Winners!
The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

This year’s 86th Academy Awards saw a split between Best Picture and Director. 12 Years A Slave won three, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.

Backstage, producer/actor Brad Pitt said, “ I love this movie. I ‑‑ just as a film, as a lover of film, the filmmaking, the ‑‑ this heroic story of a man in this inhumane situation trying to get back to his family. I love this film. I love the filmmaking. It’s counterintuitive to the way we’re making films today. It’s a real achievement by Mr. McQueen here. I love this movie. I think it’s important. I think it’s important because it deals with our history that we haven...

Oscar Predictions 2014
Contributed by Michelle McCue, Melissa Thompson and Gary Salem

Funny how fast an Oscar season goes by… only last year Argo was being given the Academy Award for Best Picture. The big night is almost here and nothing about this year’s Academy Awards is a sure bet. With so much time between the nominations in January, the various guild awards and the Olympics thrown in, the 6,028 AMPAS voters have had a long time to mull things, and their votes, over.

The winner’s acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actor Guild Awards (SAG) and the British Academy Awards (BAFTA) have never been more important as they have during this past month and a half. Voting for the Oscars closed on Tuesday, February 25, at 5 p.m.

Even the avid pundits are in a muddle and would give their eye teeth to see the final tallies. Will hopefuls Leto,...

Oscars Lowdown 2014: Best Visual Effects - Everyone clear a path for 'Gravity'
Gravity (2013)
In the lead-up to the 86th annual Academy Awards on March 2, HitFix will be bringing you the lowdown on all 24 Oscar categories with multiple entries each day. Take a few notes and bone up on the competition as we give you the edge in your office Oscar pool! The season of Oscars Lowdown (née Oscar Guide) might as well begin with the biggest no-brainer category of the bunch, just to go ahead and get it out of the way. But it's worth pointing out that it's always unfortunate when there's an obvious winner in any category, particularly Best Visual Effects as it seems a number of times over the last few years — "Avatar," "Life of Pi," etc. — there has been a clear dominant player and all other nominees are just along for the ride. Still, this year's likely victor is a landmark every bit deserving of the trophy coming its way.
