Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, Reese Witherspoon, Judi Dench, and Frances O'Connor in L'importance d'être constant (2002)
Spanx, fizz and Travel Scrabble: 30 years of friendship with Maggie Smith
Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, Reese Witherspoon, Judi Dench, and Frances O'Connor in L'importance d'être constant (2002)
In the week of the actor’s funeral, a family friend remembers Sunday lunches, photoshoots and first nights with a woman of extraordinary wit, talent and compassion

I first met Maggie through my husband, Robert Fox, the film and theatre producer. He’d first met her in 1974, when he was 22 and she was starring in Snap, a comedy about venereal disease. His task was to drive her to and from the theatre and generally hold her hand, which he remembers as enthralling and terrifying.

But they hit it off: she trusted his taste and he went on to produce her in 10 plays over 22 years, including Lettice and Lovage and The Importance of Being Earnest. That was a huge hit back in 1993 – the year I met Robert – but Maggie famously loathed everything about it, from Nicholas Hytner’s direction to Bob Crowley’s sets. When asked by the Mail’s showbiz...

Judi Dench Tearfully Reacts To Maggie Smith’s Death At Cheltenham Literary Fest
Image
A week after Maggie Smith‘s death, best friend Dame Judi Dench is at a loss for words.

When asked about Smith’s death at age 89, as well as the death of friend and collaborator Barbara Leigh-Hunt, Dench broke down into tears during a conversation on Saturday at the Cheltenham Literature Festival.

“I suppose the energy that’s created by grief…” started Dench before choking up, according to The Times, after interviewer Brendan O’Hea asked what she meant by comparing her grief around late husband Michael Williams’ 2001 death to petrol.

Smith “passed away peacefully” on Friday, Sept. 27, her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin announced in a joint statement.

She and Dench appeared together in such films as A Room with a View (1985), Tea with Mussolini (1999) and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015), as well as numerous stage productions.

Breaking Baz: Maggie Smith “Could Make Grown Men Cry” Because She Was A Perfectionist And Giant Of The Stage – In “Top Tier” With Judi Dench & Ian McKellen
Image
Maggie Smith was a constant in the life of producer Robert Fox for half a century. She could “make grown men cry,” says Fox, because “if you weren’t 100 percent on top of your game, you were dead in the water, and she was right.”

Fox produced Dame Maggie in some of her greatest stage hits from Peter Shaffer’s Lettice and Lovage to David Hare’s The Breath of Life, in which she and her best friend, Judi Dench, shared top billing at London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Dame Judi got the No. 1 dressing room. “But Maggie wasn’t fussed because she joked that Judi, she’d say, “had all those people in from Surrey to see her, so she needs the space.’ She wasn’t at all unhappy about it. She’d watch all of Judi’s guests troop in to see her. She’d say: ‘Look, there they go.

Laurence Fox Loses “Pedophiles” Libel Case in Latest Setback for British Actor: “I Feel Utterly Bereft and Totally Hopeless”
Image
British actor Laurence Fox has lost a libel case with two men he called pedophiles on social media after they had called the My Son Hunter star a racist.

On Monday, the High Court in the U.K. deemed that Fox had defamed Simon Blake, a former LGBT charity trustee, and Crystal, a drag artist and former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant, on Twitter/X in October 2020, when he called them pedophiles over an escalating row over Black History Month.

The Guardian reports that the spat on X started, when Fox said he would boycott U.K. grocery store Sainsbury’s for supporting “racial segregation and discrimination” after the company said it would establish safe spaces for Black employees during Black History Month in October 2020. Blake and Crystal, whose real name is Colin Seymour, responded to Fox’s call for a boycott by calling him racist. Fox, in turn, replied...

‘The Crown’ Trailer Ushers in End of Hit Netflix Series
Image
The Crown is preparing for the end, and the trailer for the final six episodes brings to life what creator Peter Morgan has told audiences to expect from the hit Netflix drama: A love letter to the Queen.

The final episodes will draw to a close the genre-defining prestige royal saga that has been on screens since 2016, says the logline, and the footage centers around Queen Elizabeth, played by Imelda Staunton, as she battles sentimentality that the royal family is out of touch with the country, while reflecting on her reign as the longest-serving monarch in history and the life she put aside to become Queen.

In a poignant moment that speaks to the late Queen, The Crown‘s monarch says, “I will always be by your side.”

The series paused filming on the final season when Queen Elizabeth II died on Sept. 8, 2022 at the age of 96.

‘The Crown’ Final Season: Everything to Know About the Netflix Drama’s Last Run
Image

The show’s sixth season will be its last telling the story of Queen Elizabeth II and Britain’s royal family in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

The critically acclaimed series has chronicled some six decades of Elizabeth II’s reign, recasting its central characters every two seasons as the show moves through recent history as characters age. Claire Foy played the young Elizabeth for The Crown’s first two seasons and was followed by Olivia Colman in seasons three and four; both won Emmys for their work. Imelda Staunton took over the role in season five and will finish out the show as it moves into the early 2000s.

The Best and Worst Kickstarter Video Games
Image
The modern video game industry primarily consists of two groups: Aaa developers and indie studios. The Aaa group has access to millions of dollars worth of funding and large development teams, while indie companies generally have smaller budgets and crews. While some indie organizations can receive an injection of cash from publishers, these days many studios turn to Kickstarter.

Kickstarter is arguably the most popular site that lets potential patrons vote with their wallets. If someone sees something they like, they can give it some money and bring it to life. The site has resulted in more than its fair share of noteworthy projects, including the Gloomhaven board game series and the amazing show The Legend of Vox Machina. However, Kickstarter is also home to just as many duds, such as the Skarp Laser Razor and the Ouya. Video games are no exception, as the site has played host to...

‘The Crown’s’ Final Season Will Be Split Into Two Parts
Image
Netflix has announced a premiere date for the sixth and final season of The Crown — but it won’t be debuting all at once.

As it’s done with several series in the past year and change, the streamer will split The Crown’s last run into two parts. The first four episodes will premiere on Nov. 16, with part two — six episodes — following four weeks later on Dec. 14. Netflix has similarly split up the runs of the most recent seasons of Stranger Things, You and The Witcher — which like The Crown are among the more popular shows on the platform.

Netflix also released a short teaser for the season (watch it below), looking back at the life of Queen Elizabeth II (played by Claire Foy and Olivia Colman in earlier seasons) before settling on Imelda Staunton’s current incarnation of the British monarch. “The crown is a symbol of permanence,” Claire Foy’s Queen Elizabeth II says as a montage of Foy’s young queen transfers to Olivia Colman’s middle-aged version plays in the teaser trailer. “It’s something you are, not what you do.”

“Some portion of our natural selves is always lost,” Colman takes over. “We have all made sacrifices. This is not a choice, it is a duty.”

Cut to Imelda Staunton’s eldest version of the late monarch.

The highly anticipated trailer for Season 5 of “The Crown” has arrived at long last, weeks before its Nov. 9 premiere.

‘The Crown': Elizabeth Debicki Portrays a Somber Princess Diana in Season 5 First Look (Photos)
Image
Elizabeth Debicki paints an isolated picture of Princess Diana in the first look photos for Season 5 of Netflix’s period drama “The Crown.”

The upcoming season is expected to follow the Royal Family as they “are presented with possibly their biggest challenge to date, as the public openly question their role in ‘90s Britain,” per the streamer. Part of that, presumably, will be Princess Diana’s separation from Prince Charles and her post-Royal life leading up to her death in 1997.

In one of the photos, which you can see above, Debicki leaves a crowded event with a somber look on her face. Surrounded by people, she still seems very alone.

“That’s the amazing thing about playing these people at this time, because in the journey of ‘The Crown’ so far out of all the seasons, this is the most visual content we have of the Royal Family,” Debicki said in a statement.

Guillermo Del Toro Enters Original Song Race With “Ciao Papa” From ‘Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio’
Image
Exclusive: Guillermo del Toro will add a further string to his bow this season as part of the songwriting team behind the music of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. Del Toro directs his warm and wild stop-motion animated adaptation of the classic story from Carlo Collodi with Mark Gustafson (Fantastic Mr. Fox). It is a project the Oscar-winning filmmaker has nurtured for years, and he also co-wrote the screenplay with Patrick McHale. The film makes its world premiere at the London Film Festival on Saturday.

I can confirm that the project marks del Toro’s debut outing as a songwriter, too. The musical film features several numbers with music by Alexandre Desplat—who won his second Oscar for his score for del Toro’s The Shape of Water—and lyrics by Roeban Katz and del Toro. Songs are performed by the cast including David Bradley, Ewan McGregor, Christoph Waltz, and Gregory Mann,...

Martin McDonagh’s ‘Hangmen’ Sets Broadway Return With Alfie Allen, David Threlfall
Image
Hangmen, Martin McDonagh’s Olivier Award-winning comedy that became (seemingly) an early casualty of Broadway’s 2020 Covid shutdown, has gotten a reprieve: The play will begin previews at Broadway’s Golden Theatre on Friday, April 8, with an opening night set for Thursday, April 21.

Co-starring in the limited 10-week engagement will be Alfie Allen, best known to American audiences for his indelible Game of Thrones portrayal of Theon “Reek” Greyjoy, and David Threlfall, returning to Broadway for the first time in 25 years.

The Royal Court Theatre/Atlantic Theater Company production of Hangmen will be directed by Matthew Dunster, who directed the pre-shutdown Broadway staging that co-starred Downton Abbey‘s Dan Stevens and Game of Thrones‘ Mark Addy as Harry (now to be played by Threlfall).

Prior to the shutdown, Hangmen began previews at the Golden on February 28, 2020, and was scheduled...

The royal drama, which scored 24 nominations, beat The Boys, Bridgerton, The Handmaid’s Tale, Lovecraft Country, The Mandalorian, Pose and This Is Us as part of a major Emmys rout.

Liz McCann Dies: Pioneering Broadway Producer, Winner Of Nine Tony Awards Was 90
Image
Liz McCann, a groundbreaking Broadway producer who, as one of the first and most successful women to achieve a prominent leadership role in the theater industry – a term she hated, preferring “theater community” — died Thursday of cancer at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. She was 90.

Her death was announced by her longtime associate and friend Kristen Luciani.

Elizabeth Ireland McCann — known throughout the Broadway community simply as Liz — started her career in theater as a production assistant and manager with Proscenium Productions at the Cherry Lane Theatre in the 1950s. In 1955, the company would be the first Off Broadway theater to win a Special Tony Award for its seminal productions of The Way of the World and Thieves’ Carnival.

Following a series of short-term theater jobs, McCann, who had acted in plays during her student years at Manhattanville College, completed a law degree at Fordham University. She later earned a...

It Starts On The Page: Read The Script For The Season 4 Finale Of Peter Morgan’s ‘The Crown’
Image
After a strong showing at the Golden Globes earlier this year, The Crown will be hoping for similar success at the Emmys in September. Netflix’s cultural phenomenon all starts with the words of Peter Morgan, who has penned every single episode of the royal saga.

Below is his script for the Season 4 finale of The Crown, which brings the curtain down on Margaret Thatcher’s 11-year tenure as Prime Minister and chronicles the increasingly fractious marriage between Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

The episode, titled “War,” contains the final scene between Queen Elizabeth II and Thatcher, played by screen titans Olivia Colman and Gillian Anderson, respectively. It ends with the Queen pinning the Order of Merit on her Prime Minister, but not before the two powerful women reflect on their often complicated relationship.

We can bring you Morgan’s screenplay as part of Deadline’s It Starts On the Page,...

“This book has haunted me for a large part of my life,” Welch said in a statement. “It contains some of my favorite lines in literature. Rita Wilson Says Scott Rudin Complained About Her Breast Cancer Diagnosis Before Broadway Opening
Image
Hollywood is starting to speak up about film and Broadway producer Scott Rudin’s long, alleged history of abusive behavior toward staff and collaborators. Rudin’s behavior has been heavily documented in both a Hollywood Reporter exposé and a Vulture.com deep dive.

On Saturday, the New York Times published an extensive story interviewing such erstwhile Rudin collaborators as Rita Wilson, David Geffen, Robert Fox, and playwright Adam Rapp. In one particularly harrowing section, Wilson talked about her experience working with Rudin on Broadway for Larry David’s 2015 play “Fish in the Dark,” the same year she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“When she told Mr. Rudin the news, she said, he complained that she would need time off during Tony voting season and asked to see her medical records, while Anna Shapiro, the director, grew upset about having to find a replacement,” the story reads. “A few days later,...

Frances McDormand in Nomadland (2020)
