Series Mania Booms, Grows Market Edge, Anticipates New U.S.-Europe Tensions: These and Other Takeaways from the 2025 Edition
Image
Lille, France 2025 looks set to go down in history as the year that Series Mania, already the biggest TV festival in Europe, stepped up to another level.

Exhibition booths at the Grand Palais’ newly expanded second floor stretched from one side of its second floor – and the Palais is very grand – to another. Floor traffic was packed, charging up from second to third and fourth floors with more exhibition space with an energy reminiscent of Mipcom back in the day. Multiple keynotes, especially those made available to the public, were sold out. Charlie Brooker’s could have given his “Black Mirror” Masterclass twice over and still have had Sro.

Amanda Seyfried, in town for “Long Bright River,” Pamela Adlon, Series Mania’s jury president, and Christina Hendricks, teasing “Good American Family” and presenting “Small Town, Big Story,” added star dazzle to this year’s edition.

The Series Mania lineup came...

10 Best Laura Dern Movies To Watch After Lonely Planet
Image
Laura Dern's brand-new movie Lonely Planet is currently streaming on Netflix, and these 10 movies are her best roles to watch after finishing it. Lonely Planet's cast of characters stars Dern as Katherine Loewe and Liam Hemsworth as Owen Brophy, an unlikely couple given Owen and Katherine's age gap and Owen's relationship with his girlfriend, Lily Kemp (Diana Silvers). All three characters are attending a writing retreat in Morocco, which is primarily where Lonely Planet was filmed, and throughout the trip, Owen and Katherine develop deep feelings for one another.

Although there were some problems with Lonely Planet, the movie was generally charming, and Hemsworth and Dern's performances were solid. Even in light of Dern's performance in the movie, though, Lonely Planet is far from Dern's best role. These 10 movies represent Laura Dern's very best performances outside Lonely Planet.

The Son Laura Dern's 2022 Movie With Hugh Jackman Included Heavy...

First Oscars Of The Season Handed Out At 14th Governors Awards: Mel Brooks, Angela Bassett, Carol Littleton, Michelle Satter
Image
The Governors Awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is always one of the annual Hollywood nights I look forward to, one that delivers Honorary Oscars in a non-televised but always warm, fun, and inspiring evening. I have attended every single one of them, and even wrote the 2nd Governors Awards, but I have to say Tuesday night’s 14th annual ceremony had an extra personal and devastatingly heartfelt kick to it, quite unforeseen when the Academy’s Board Of Governors announced their honorees – 97-year-old Mel Brooks, Film Editor Carol Littleton, Angela Bassett, and Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter – way back on June 26.

The ceremony as it usually is, was set for a mid-November date, the 18th but due to the unpredictability of the writers and actors strikes was moved to January 9. Sadly life intervened in the meantime. Littleton’s husband and former AMPAS President, cinematographer John Bailey...

Palm Trees and Power Lines Director Jamie Dack on Translating Her Teenage Experiences, the Five Stages of Grooming, and Writing Aphex Twin a Letter
Image
In Palm Trees and Power Lines, director Jamie Dack carefully sets up the factors that lead teenager Lea (newcomer Lily McInerny) into a relationship with Tom (Jonathan Tucker), a man twice her age. Her father is absent and her mother seems to only notice her when she’s in between boyfriends. There’s a disconnect between Lily and her friends at times. Then there’s old-fashioned boredom––idle hands are the devil’s playthings after all. Summer nights may consist of the drinking and hooking up one expects of teenagers, but suburban malaise casts a long shadow over the proceedings, creating the antithesis of a Linklater night out.

So like St. Augustine and his pears, Lea and her friends dine and dash one evening, not for seeming lack of funds but just because. It’s here that Tom first makes contact with her, via a quick wink as he walks past her booth.

U.S. Dramatic Competition

This unexpected film, which if anything might be a contemporary version of ‘Pumping Iron’ in which bodybuilding and celebrity-to-be meets Travis Bickle of ‘Taxi Driver’, shows a restraint and rechanneling of psychopathological leanings which redeem the film and its hero, a sweet but uncontrollable and, in the end, an invincible dreamer.

Surely the producer Jennifer Fox felt an affinity to this project. Much of Fox’s work deals with understanding trauma. The emotional depth of the filmic concerns her in both her docs and fiction features. Jennifer Fox and In 2018, Jennifer Fox directed the film The Tale (2018), inspired by her own experience as a survivor of child sexual abuse. Unlike her previous works, the film is not a documentary but a narrative film. That film featured Academy Award-winning actress Laura Dern and premiered at the Sundance film Festival in 2018 and was picked up there by HBO. The plot of the film directly references Fox’s own experience of recognizing and grappling with her own abuse history. While writing the script, Fox developed the idea of “issue-based fiction,” in which she is able to use storytelling to “dive into issues that people could learn from and experience.” Borrowing from her documentary filmmaking, Fox collaborated extensively on the production of the film, outreaching to mental health advocates, lawyers, sexual abuse survivors, and women’s lived experiences to transform narrative into a tool for change. Along with HBO, Fox was able to develop a resource website and viewing guides to accompany the film to be used in educating and opening up the conversation about childhood sexual abuse, the effects of trauma, and memory.[*] In films like The Tale and Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman, trauma is examined in relation to memory and womanhood. In both films Fox is interested in how past trauma is able to shape one’s life and memory. In this film, this same element of a trauma-based life and memory is crucial to understandng the character of Killian Maddox, an obsessive bodybuilder who strives to win the Mr. Olympia contest and to be featured on the cover of body-building magazines.

“On every street in every city in this country, there’s a nobody who dreams of being a somebody.” So says the tagline for Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. Killian Maddox is such a nobody. Occupying a small space in the film, it is revealed that his uncontrollable temper stems from past abuse and trauma which includes the murder of his mother by his father and his father’s suicide in front of his own childish eyes. That shapes his chaotic and antisocial vision of the world and at the film’s climax is re-experienced.

Killian Maddox lives with his ailing veteran grandfather, obsessively working out between court-mandated therapy sessions and part-time shifts at a grocery store where he has developed a crush on a friendly cashier. Killian struggles to read social cues and to maintain control of his volatile temper. He senses his disconnection in a hostile world, but pours his passion into a dream of bodybuilding superstardom.

The film has you squirming in your seat as he veers toward destruction but, just as you wonder, what good can come out of his journey. As Killian’s behavior becomes more obsessive and erratic, he still looks after his unconditionally loving grandfather. And as his delusions of destruction escalate, he faces his own trauma and breaks down into tears as he embraces his grandfather. This is the turning point for him. Killian sees success in bodybuilding as the link to acceptance and emotional connection. As our pathetic though physically stunning hero googles answers to “How do you make people like you?” and “How do you make a mark upon the world?” (or something like that) he finds the answer he needs in order to keep living.

Jonathan Majors

Jonathan Majors’ has created an alarmingly single-minded body building character with a soft-spoken shyness alternating with indomitable fury, a multisided black man living in perpetual mental chaos. Majors’ eclectic collection of roles show his huge dramatic range. For his role as Montgomery Allen in The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Majors was nominated for a Gotham Award in the category of “Breakthrough Actor” and an Independent Spirit Award for “Best Supporting Male.” From The Last Black Man to a fighter pilot in the recent Devotion, to the western The Harder They Fall and soon a villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, his choices reveal a huge dramatic range which will reap fans for a long time to come. Born September 7, 1989 in Lompoc, California, Majors is a graduate from the Yale School of Drama and is a recipient of the National Society of Arts and Letters (Nsal), National Drama Competition. He made his screen debut starring in the ABC miniseries When We Rise and has since landed strong roles, cementing him as a Hollywood actor to watch.

For more insight into Jonathan Majors and his work, read the interview with The Hollywood Reporter November 30, 2022 on the subject of Devotion.

Majors is executive producing under his Tall Street production banner along with Nightcrawler producers Jennifer Fox, Dan Gilroy and Jeffrey Soros and Simon Horsman. CAA Media Finance arranged financing through the Los Angeles Media Fund and is repping the film for both domestic and international distribution. Los Angeles Media Fund (Jeffrey Soros, Luke Rogers III, Simon Horsman and Andrew Blau) fully financed the film.

Jonathan Majors’ has created an alarmingly single-minded body building character with a soft-spoken shyness alternating with indomitable fury, a multisided black man living in perpetual mental chaos. Majors’ eclectic collection of roles show his huge dramatic range. For his role as Montgomery Allen in The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Majors was nominated for a Gotham Award in the category of “Breakthrough Actor” and an Independent Spirit Award for “Best Supporting Male.” From The Last Black Man to a fighter pilot in the recent Devotion, and soon a villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, his choices reveal a huge dramatic range which will reap fans for a long time to come.

They are currently working on The Color of Cola, a documentary based on a book by Stephanie Capparell, The Real Pepsi Challenge: How One Pioneering Company Broke Color Barriers in 1940s American Business, which shares the experience of the all-Black sales team at Pepsi, directed by Stanley Nelson and Jacqueline Olive.

Moneyball Director Tackling New Adaptation of A Christmas Carol
Do we really need another adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol? The story has been put on film almost twenty times already, not to mention the hundreds (probably thousands) of stage productions that have taken place since the book's first publication in 1843. Robert Zemeckis directed a CG version starring Jim Carrey that came out in 2009, which wasn't that long ago! But THR reports that Moneyball and Foxcatcher director Bennett Miller has another adaptation in the works from writer Tom Stoppard (Brazil, Shakespeare in Love).

At least they aren't going to try to do another modernized version of the story to make it "cool" or to try to appeal to a teenaged audience. This one will be set in the 19th century, just like the original novella. Mega-producers Megan Ellison and Scott Rudin are producing alongside Miller and Jennifer Fox, so this definitely has some heavy hitters in its corner,...

Miller, Stoppard Team For "Christmas Carol"
"Capote" helmer Bennett Miller and "Shakespeare in Love" screenwriter Tom Stoppard are teaming for a new film adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic fable "A Christmas Carol" for Annapurna Pictures.

Set in the 19th century like Dickens' 1843 novella, the story follows Ebenezer Scrooge and his redemptive Christmas Eve tour of the holiday past, present and future.

The story has been famously adapted for the screen countless times from the Bill Murray-led "Scrooged" to a Robert Zemeckis mo-cap adaptation to even an "Uncle Scrooge"-themed version.

Megan Ellison, Scott Rudin, Jennifer Fox and Miller will produce.

After having been a holiday staple since 1843, Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” is returning to the big screen in the hands of director Bennett Miller and screenwriter Tom Stoppard. The classic tale about bitter old miser Ebenezer Scrooge and his visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come is being developed for Megan Ellison‘s Annapurna Pictures. Ellison, Miller, Scott Rudin and Jennifer Fox will produce. Unlike Bill Murray‘s 1988 comedy “Scrooged,” the latest adaption will be a period piece set in the Dickensian era of the mid 19th century. The Conversation: Top 10 American Indie Filmmakers Missing in Action
No film buff wants to see a promising, or prominent filmmaker pull a disappearing act a la Terrence Malick, (though it seems he isn’t keen to repeat another lapse like the one between Days of Heaven to The Thin Red Line), but whether they’re dealing with unforeseeable professional (endless pre-production woes, writer’s block) or personal issues, sometimes there is a considerable time between projects.

With John Cameron Mitchell, Charlie Kaufman, Rebecca Miller, Patty Jenkins, Kenneth Lonergan and more recently, Barry Jenkins recently moving out of the so called “inactive” period, we decided to compile a list of the top ten American filmmakers who, for the most part, we’ve lost sight of and would like to see get back in the director’s chair again. Most of the filmmakers listed below have gone well over half a decade without a substantial movement in this category. Here is...

2015 Independent Spirit Award Winners: 'Birdman' Tops the Field
The 2015 Spirit Awards were handed out today and it was Birdman taking Best Feature and Best Actor (Michael Keaton) while Boyhood went home a double winner taking Best Director (Richard Linklater) and Best Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette). However, while that's the result for the two big guns that will be going head-to-head at tomorrow night's Oscars, Nightcrawler was also a double winner taking Best Screenplay and Best First Feature, both awarded to writer/director Dan Gilroy. Otherwise, no big surprises with Julianne Moore (Still Alice) taking Best Actress and J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) taking Supporting Actor, Citizenfour took Best Documentary and Birdman scored a third win for Emmanuel Lubezki for Best Cinematography. Justin Simien (Dear White People) took home Best First Screenplay and, whoa!, Look!, Whiplash was also a double winner, with Tom Cross winning for Best Editing (well deserved!) and anticipated Oscar winner in the same category, Ida won Best Foreign Language Film.
