Trivia

Charles Fox

Edit
  • Father of writer-director Robbie Fox for whom he scored a film and two pilots.
  • When Charlie Fox first presented the new "Love Boat" theme to producer Aaron Spelling, there was neither a tape machine nor piano in the office, so Fox had to sing it "a cappella" while snapping his finger. Spelling loved it, started snapping along and signed off on it based on that.
  • Inducted into the American Songwriters Hall of Fame (2004).
  • He was awarded a star on the Bronx Walk of Fame in New York City in July 2009.
  • Member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Music Branch) [2007-2017] and again [2022-2025].
  • Honored by Society of Composers & Lyricists with lifetime achievement award (2009).
  • In Fall 2010, Charlie Fox and Hal David were commissioned by the Mayor of Beverly Hills, to write the city's official theme song, called "90210 Beverly Hills", recorded by Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr..
  • Began his career writing and playing Latin music for Tito Puente, Joe Quijano, Ray Barretto and other Latin music greats, then released his first solo salsa album "Just For Fun" (1962).
  • In 2010, he was commissioned by the Polish government to write and conduct an oratorio - "Lament & Prayer" - set to the words of Pope John Paul II. He premiered the piece with the Poland National Opera Company and it became the subject of the documentary "100 Voices".
  • In November 1977, the top three television shows all had music composed by Charles Fox: Happy Days - Les jours heureux (1974), Laverne et Shirley (1976) and La croisière s'amuse (1977). This happened repeatedly over the next few years in different orders. In 1979, the Donna Pescow/Robert Hays sitcom Angie (1979) gave Fox four shows in the top 10 all in the same week.
  • Honored at the 2021 Middleburg Film Festival with the Legacy Composer Award for lifetime achievement in film scoring.
