When he found out his character Lord Refa, in Babylon 5, was to be killed off; he reportedly went to the show's producer and asked what he had done wrong. He was informed that it was because the character had to die to advance the story and that it was not because of his performances which they had really liked. In fact, the producer considered his performance so impressive that it would make his character's death that much more impactful for the audience and serve the story better.
