‘Prizzi’s Honor’ at 40: How John and Anjelica Huston made history together with his penultimate picture
Image
John Huston directed some of the best movies in film history. From his pathbreaking noirs like The Maltese Falcon and The Asphalt Jungle to The African Queen or The Man Who Would Be King, Huston was nominated for 14 Oscars, winning two for The Treasure of Sierra Madre. Huston directed his final film, The Dead, while ill with emphysema, and died months before the film’s release. His penultimate film, the black comedy organized crime film Prizzi’s Honor, was easily one of his best — and that’s saying something.

Based on Richard Condon’s 1982 novel, Prizzi’s Honor was released 40 years ago, on June 14, 1985. The film centers Charley Partanna (Jack Nicholson), a mob hitman for the Prizzi family, who falls for Irene Walker (Kathleen Turner). The two become romantically entangled before the situation gets messy: he discovers Walker was married to a man Charley killed for stealing from the mob. That’s...

How Hello Dolly! Solved A Script Problem For Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid
Image
In a lot of ways, one of the reasons "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" remains such an enduring western is because it wasn't afraid to break some genre rules. Both screenwriter William Goldman and director George Roy Hill injected their own idiosyncrasies into this retelling of the two infamous outlaws. It's why the movie has just as many laughs as it does shootouts — fluctuating perfectly between slapstick and dryly delivered one-liners. Hill even went out of his way to remove some of its funnier moments after he decided the audience was laughing too much at a screening.

But such tonal shifts are exactly what makes "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" so unique and mold-breaking. Like the Burt Bacharach soundtracked bicycle montage scene in which he lulls away at "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" — which was actually written for the film. At worst jarringly anachronistic, the presence of...

Adaa, Ada and Cga join call for targeted sector support
Sharron Meissner
Marina Prior accompanied by John Foreman.

Echoing calls by other industry bodies, the Australian Drama Agents’ Association (Adaa), Association of Drama Agents in Nsw (Ada), Casting Guild of Australia (Cga) and allied businesses today pressed the Federal Government to urgently support both the live performance and screen sectors with a targeted rescue package.

In a statement issued today, Adaa, Ada and Cga welcomed the JobKeeper package for small businesses and sole traders, but expressed concern that it does not appear to cover freelancers who work short-term contracts, and argued that the impacts on the industry will last for a significantly longer period than the next six months. A targeted rescue package will help the industry rebound after the restrictions put in place to contain the spread of Covid-19 are lifted, they argued.

The bodies’ concern around JobKeeper is also held by the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (Meaa), who earlier...

The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean
Need a laugh? Paul Newman shoots people, hangs others and runs a judiciary speed trap for unwary outlaw vagrants. John Huston’s picture is a slack, passably amusing interpretation of writer John Milius’s career- boosting screenplay. A slow-going exercise in ‘printing the legend, only funnier,’ it’s recommended just to take in Stacy Keach’s memorable albino menace, ‘Bad Bob.’

'The MacKintosh Man': THR's 1973 Review
On July 25, 1973, Warner Bros.' Paul Newman thriller The Mackintosh Man opened in New York at Loews theaters. The Hollywood Reporter's original review is below:

The Mackintosh Man, produced by John Foreman and directed by John Huston, is a good genre film in the ice cold vein of The Maltese Falcon. It isn't nearly as rich nor fine as that early Huston classic but tells an interesting story with a sure sense of atmosphere, location and supporting characters.

Paul Newman plays an American who appears to be an international jewel thief betrayed by his employer Harry Andrews ...

Prizzi’s Honor
Richard Condon and John Huston’s show is like a gangland version of Moonstruck, bouncing effortlessly between earnest romanticism and cynical satire. Hit man Jack Nicholson is a brass-knuckle Romeo, and Kathleen Turner’s mysterious bicoastal Juliet has nothing but surprises for him. Near the end of his career, Huston’s direction is as assured as can be.

Dan Abrams And The View Tackle The Grim Story Of The Ri Child Killer Released On Parole
Today on Good Morning America, John Foreman warned that he might not be able to control himself if he were to ever come in contact with Michael Woodmansee. Woodmansee is the man who, 36 years ago, brutally murdered Foreman's five-year-old son Jason. He was arrested years later while trying to attack another child and, once police connected him to the earlier crime, he was charged with 40 years in prison but is now being released 12 years early. Mediaite founder and ABC legal analyst Dan Abrams joined the hosts of The View to examine the legal implications of Woodmanee's parole and the tortured father's threat.
