‘River of Blood’ Review
Image
Stars: Sarah Alexandra Marks, Louis James, David Wayman, Joseph Milson, Ella Starbuck, Tiffany Hannam-Daniels, Einar Haraldsson | Written by Tom Boyle | Directed by Howard J. Ford

Howard J. Ford has quietly become one of the UK’s most consistently engaging genre filmmakers, delivering low-budget projects that often look and feel far bigger than their modest means. From the survival thriller The Ledge to the tense Never Let Go, his work thrives on smart use of resources, strong performances, and a willingness to explore different corners of the thriller and horror landscape. With River of Blood, Ford steps firmly into the realm of jungle-set cannibal horror – a departure from his recent projects, but one that feels like a bold and welcome experiment.

The setup is simple but effective. Four friends – Jasmine, Aj, Maya, and Richie – are holidaying in Thailand, celebrating Richie’s recent business windfall. But underlying tensions between Richie and Aj,...

Kayak Trip Gone Wrong - 'River of Blood' Brutal Horror Film Trailer
Image
"We have to get out of here..." Good luck. Saban Films has revealed an official US trailer for an indie horror titled River of Blood, make by UK genre filmmaker Howard J. Ford. This crazy brutal cannibal horror is being dumped on VOD in the summer - starting in August next month. Four kayakers take the wrong river into hell. Will they escape? A jungle kayak adventure descends into terror when a group of friends becomes the target of a merciless, bloodthirsty tribe of cannibals. This stars Joseph Millson, Louis James, Ella Starbuck, Sarah Alexandra Marks, and David Wayman. More horror filmmakers keep trying to make cannibal horror movies, but none of them will ever live up to the intensity of Apocalypto or brutality of The Green Inferno. This looks like another generic cannibal tribe thriller without much of anything new to offer. // Continue Reading ›...

First 'River of Blood' Trailer Reveals a Horror-Fueled Kayak Expedition Gone Horribly Wrong
Image
Kayaking is about to get a horrifying twist in the official trailer for River of Blood. The new survival horror title from Saban Films hits theaters, digital, and on-demand platforms next month and follows a group of friends on what's supposed to be a relatively peaceful jungle adventure on the river. Instead of enjoying nature from the comfort of their boats, however, they soon find themselves the targets of a bloodthirsty tribe that is none too happy with outsiders encroaching on their land. Things take a grisly turn as they realize they're little more than flies caught in a spider's web, with the footage showing their desperate attempts to escape a foe that is almost always around them.

The trailer opens with a gorgeous overhead shot of rivers cutting through the jungles of Thailand, where the film was both shot and set. While the majestic scenery invokes adventure, the winding...

‘Bone Keeper’ Digs Up New Creature Feature from Director Howard J Ford
Image
Howard J. Ford has returned to the horror genre with Bone Keeper, a new British creature feature that promises to bring claustrophobic suspense and subterranean terror to the big screen. Featuring veteran actor John Rhys-Davies, the film has just completed production and is expected to be delivered this autumn. In 1976, a man named James Wheeler disappeared while investigating strange sightings in the area, leaving behind only a single frame of Super 8 film depicting the silhouette of an unknown creature. Now, in the present day, Wheeler’s granddaughter and her companions descend into the same underground maze, intent on solving the mystery. What they find is a threat...

Escape - Jennie Kermode - 19300
Howard J. Ford
In the opening scene of Howard J Ford’s latest film, we see a young woman wearing tiny denim shorts and a pink bikini top running through a desert. This is par for the course for a certain sort of film, except that it’s her abdomen, not her breasts, in centre frame, the straps beneath her top showing off impressively toned muscle. Ford’s films often focus on women’s bodies, but as sources of power, not just passive objects. In this case, however, his heroines are also being trafficked, and they don’t seem fully aware of their power, cowed in a way that doesn’t ring true so that despite efforts to subvert the narrative the film too often feels like just familiar exploitation stuff.

It has many of the signifiers thereof. One of the bad guys is distinguished by an eyepatch, another by a scar. They all have East European accents.

Escape Review: A Harrowing Ride of Gritty Survival Thrills
Image
The movie introduces us to the harrowing situation of ten young women on vacation in a seemingly idyllic tropical locale. Little do they know the alluring resort hiding a sinister secret—it’s actually a front for a criminal organization trafficking women into sexual slavery overseas.

One night, the women get drugged and taken prisoner, locked away in the damp basement of a compound run by the ruthless leader Andras and his band of goons. Among the kidnapped group are Karla, a nurse determined to protect the other captives, and Lucy, a resilient survivor haunted by past trauma.

While most of the women plunge into despair, Karla takes charge. Calmly examining their prison for weaknesses, she hatches an elaborate escape plan. But pulling it off won’t be easy, with their jailers on constant watch and deadly pursuit sure to follow any breakout attempt. Karla rallies the others with hopeful words,...

‘Escape’ VOD Review

Stars: Ksenia Islamova, Sarah Alexandra Marks, Sean Cronin, Louis James, Sophie Rankin | Written and Directed by Howard J. Ford

Escape opens with a massive burst of adrenaline. A woman running for her life across a desert landscape trips and impales herself on a sun-bleached piece of wood. Her pursuer leaves her for dead because, as he tells his boss, “She’s too damaged. Even if she lives, she’d never sell.” He should have made sure she was dead because as he looks at a map, she comes up behind him and beats his head in with a rock. Then she stabs him with his own knife and, just to make sure, puts the pickaxe in the back of his truck through his chest.

Twenty-four hours ago Tamsin (Ksenia Islamova; The Lockdown Hauntings) and her friend Karla arrived in Fuerteventura. It didn’t take long for Andras and his crew...

‘DarkGame’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Andrew P Stephen, Ed Westwick, Lola Wayne, Rory Alexander, Rick Yale, Natalya Tsvetkova | Written by Gary Grant, Niall Johnson | Directed by Howard J. Ford

DarkGame, the latest thriller about dark doings on the Dark Web, opens with the masked figure known as The Presenter overseeing the murder of a bound woman in a manner chosen by the highest bidder. By the way, he chooses a chainsaw as the instrument of her demise. That’s followed by Detectives Ben Jacobs and Cathy Burnette rescuing two missing children from traffickers.

Ben has barely gotten home to his pregnant wife however when they’re called back into the station. The woman we saw killed in the opening scene had vanished without a trace a couple of weeks earlier. The footage is the only clue they have as to who is responsible, but the people behind it know how to cover their tracks.

The Ledge Review – FrightFest Glasgow 2022
Image
High concept, tiny budget thrillers are ironically, something of a cliff edge for filmmakers; they’re often either a breeding ground for clever innovation, or they totally fall apart at the seams with wild intentions but not enough resources to follow through properly. And while Howard J. Ford’s The Ledge definitely boasts a meaty genre set-up that makes for a killer hook, actually pulling it off ends up much harder than it looks.

Experienced climber Kelly (Brittany Ashworth) finds her gorgeous European mountain-climbing vacation taking a turn for the nightmarish, when her best friend Sophie winds up dead at the hands of a gang of hyper-masculine city bros. With a video of the attack in her rucksack and only one escape route, she makes for the nearest cliff, soon finding herself trapped without supplies, suspended hundreds of feet in the air, and with the killers giving chase.

It’s...

‘The Ledge’ Review: Howard J. Ford’s Latest Revenge Thriller Lacks Any Sort Of Tension
Image
Why do we watch revenge movies? An often argued reason is catharsis. Revenge movies have a unique way of dredging up cultural anxieties and stabbing them in the back, so when the lights come up, we can feel safer about contemporary fears and issues. Howard J. Ford has managed to do this in crisp, low-budget ways with “Never Let Go” (kidnapped girls) and “The Dead” and “The Dead 2” (autoimmune viruses).

Review: The Ledge Has a Thrilling Premise That Loses Its Grip
Image
Running away from a villain is familiar in thrillers and horror films. These scenes take place primarily on foot, in open or enclosed spaces, and often in the dark to intensify the stakes and possible deadly outcome for the film’s protagonist – but they always put up a fight. It isn’t often we see a chase executed in such a unique way like in The Ledge. Howard J. Ford’s film sees a woman’s life literally hang in the balance as she climbs the face of the 11 thousand foot Dolomite Mountains to escape the hunters on her tail.

Gearing up for an epic climb is Kelly (Brittany Ashworth) and Sophie (Anaïs Parello). An opening shot of the Italian mountain range accompanied by an energetic score emphasizes what a thrilling feat this will be for them, but that’s shattered when a group of guys shows up. Josh (Ben Lamb...

‘Never Let Go’ Review
Stars: Angela Dixon, Nigel Whitmey, Lisa Eichhorn, Velibor Topic, Heather Peace, Rami Nasr, Sarah Perles, Samantha Bolter, Michael Xavier, Glenn Salvage, Sanita Simms, Darcie Lincoln | Written and Directed by Howard J. Ford

How best to describe Never Let Go? How about a movie that feels like Paul Greengrass directed Taken, with a kick-ass leading female of T2 Linda Hamilton proportions…

In truth, in my humble opinion Never Let Go is actually way better than those Taken movies. I know, I know, I liked them when they first came out as well, but this movie completely took me by surprise… In the best possible way. Ladies and Gents, Angela Bloody Dixon. This leading lady is fantastic, she grips the viewer by the balls and takes you on a thrilling, tour de force ride, leaving you wondering exactly how far would you go for your kids.

So I guess I should give...

Interview: Angela Dixon
Action thriller Never Let Go is now available on demand so we sat down with actress Angela Dixon to discuss her role in the film.

How did you first get into acting?

It all began at a very young age. I had always wanted to be an actor growing up but I didn’t really think that it could be more than a dream. Then, at the age of 16, I played the part of Barbara Allen in ‘Dark of the Moon’ at college and it appeared that I had some talent. At that point it started to become a reality for me. I studied drama at college, University and finally I went to drama school. So all in all I studied drama and acting for 6 years. Although the real learning starts when you are actually on the job.

What first attracted you to the film Never Let Go?

Most actresses...

Review: Never Let Go (2015)
After her child is abducted on the beach of Morocco whilst on a vacation Lisa Brennon (Angela Dixon) starts a race against time to find her child before it’s too late. Working her way relentlessly through the back streets and barren landscapes, she uses her government training and contacts to find out where her baby was taken. When she is implicated in the murder of a seemingly innocent man, she also finds herself wanted by the local police. Now alone in an unfamiliar country with no money, no transport and no friends, she must do everything she can to get her baby back.

Prior to the opening credits of the film we get the following statistics regarding missing children. Over 800,000 children are reported missing every year. The first three hours are critical. After that, there is less than a 25% chance of finding them. Despite the fact many kids will...

The last time we tuned in to 660 on the radio dial, we heard a chilling tale of the dead coming back to life. The latest broadcast of King Falls Am digs deeper into the town's horror-centric history with special guest Howard Ford Beauregard III, though co-host Ben doesn't agree with the self-proclaimed historian's "facts" about the past.

Hosted by Sammy Stevens (formerly known as Shotgun Sammy from the Bj & Kazoo Morning Show) and Ben Arnold, King Falls Am is a late-night radio talk show that broadcasts out of small-town America and covers a wide range of eerie topics that are right at home on the "Listen" section of Daily Dead. Expect to hear new broadcasts of the show on the 1st and 15th of every month, and you can listen to the sixth broadcast right now!

There's now another way to listen to Sammy and Ben discuss the eerie events of their supernaturally charged town,...

The Dead Co-Director Returns With Action Thriller Never Let Go [Trailer]
A number of years ago, before "The Walking Dead" was a huge thing and zombies were just coming to the forefront of popular culture, the Ford Brothers released a movie that brought something new to a, then already tired, genre. The Dead (review) was a success which the directors followed up with a sequel and now Howard Ford is stepping out with his own project Never Let Go.

Starring Angela Dixon, it's the story of a single mother who takes the law into her own hands when her child is kidnapped. It looks and sounds a little like a mix between Taken and one of the Bourne movies, complete with exotic setting and the suggestion of political intrigue, and that's perfectly great [Continued ...]...
