He studied communication, film and semiotics at the Universidad Iberoamericana under the teaching of important teachers such as Guillermo Arriaga and Carlos Carrera. At the postgraduate level, he served as co-producer of thesis projects at the CONACULTA Cinematographic Training Center. He began his professional career as an assistant director on the multi-award-winning film "Rojo Amanecer" (Jorge Fons, 1989), winner of 11 Ariel awards and the special jury prize at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, Spain. Later in 1995 he assisted his father again on the acclaimed film "El Callejón de los Milagros", winner of more than 40 international awards (Berlin, Valladolid, Chicago, etc.). He has written and directed several short films, including "Benjamín", winner of the award for best short film at the Images du Nouveau Monde festival in Quebec, Canada. Throughout his professional career, he has directed important actors such as Héctor Bonilla, Gonzalo Vega, Evangelina Elizondo, Silverio Palacios, Evangelina Martínez, Jesús Ochoa and Diego Luna. He was also the film director of Juan Gabriel's musical concert "Juntos Otra Vez" at the Degollado theater in Guadalajara, Jalisco, and part of the directing team of soap operas at Televisa and Tv Azteca. In 1990, Julio Fons began his career as an advertising director working at the production companies Cine 16 and Zeta Film, owned by Alejandro González Iñárritu, with whom he collaborated for more than 2 years. He has directed hundreds of commercials for international agencies such as Walter Thompson, Olabuenaga Chemistri and Ogilvy in Mexico, Central America and the United States. He has been a producer of documentaries and educational series throughout the country and a director at the production house LucíaFilms of the director Michel Franco with whom he has collaborated for more than 10 years. He is currently finishing his first film "Vivir", whose chapter "Vejez" addresses the problem of missing persons in Mexico. He is also producing the "Anuario Bio Cultural de México" and is the creative director of various cultural projects and television series. His latest projects as a producer, director and photographer are the international series "The Spice Trails Latinoamérica" (2023) and the international series "EAT" (2025) which addresses the problem of why we eat what we eat, filmed in various countries such as India, Japan, Chile, Guatemala, Indonesia and Mexico.
