GOP Bill Proposes Kennedy Center Be Renamed “Donald J. Trump Center for the Performing Arts”
Image
A new GOP-backed bill seeks to rename the Kennedy Center in honor of Donald Trump. Introduced by Representative Bob Onder, a Republican from Missouri, the “Make Entertainment Great Again (Mega) Act” aims to recognize Trump’s supposed dedication to the preservation of the arts by changing the name the country’s premier performing arts center in honor of the former reality TV star–turned–president. If passed, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts would be officially known as the “Donald J. Trump Center for the Performing Arts.”

“From books and television shows to board games, movies, and more; when it comes to the arts, President Trump’s golden touch has captivated and entertained audiences for decades,” a press release on Onder’s website reads. It goes on to describe Trump’s The Apprentice and appearances in film and TV as enamoring American and British viewers, specifically highlighting...

Joan Baez on America Under Trump: ‘It Feels Like Torn Fabric’
Image
Pull into the tree-cloaked driveway of Joan Baez’s home south of San Francisco and roam around her house and the first thing you’ll notice are oversize portraits she’s painted of Volodymyr Zelensky, Martin Luther King Jr., Anthony Fauci, Gandhi, and the late congressman John Lewis. For years, Baez would display two at a time in her front yard, but now they lean forlornly on a porch.

“Just after Trump got elected [last fall], somebody tattled to somebody in the city, who says, ‘Does she have permits?’” Baez says. “It...

Conan O’Brien Feted With Mark Twain Prize as Comedians Take Aim at Trump: ‘I Miss the Days When You Were America’s Only Orange A–hole’
Image
Talk show veteran Conan O’Brien was feted with the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor Sunday in a lively production that blended accolades from numerous colleagues with occasional jabs at the Trump administration by participants — included the evening’s honoree.

Fellow Mark Twain Prize winner Will Ferrell was among those on hand to celebrate O’Brien. He couldn’t resist a reference to current events in Washington. Ferrell joked that he didn’t budget enough time for the ceremony: “I’m supposed to be shutting down the Department of Education,” he quipped.

Fresh off his emcee duties at the Academy Awards, O’Brien received the Mark Twain prize from David Letterman at the conclusion of the roast-style love fest from numerous comedians at the annual affair. Slated to air as a special on Netflix at a future date, it was the first national event held at the...

Trump Wants to Stage “Non-Woke” Musicals Like Cats at Kennedy Center
Image
Donald Trump, now serving as board chair of the Kennedy Center, is well into his overhaul of the cultural institution. On February 7th, he fired dozens of board members, appointed himself to the top role, and dismissed Deborah Rutter from her position as president—a role she held for 11 years. Now, Trump has reportedly begun storyboarding the shows he wants to produce in Washington, D.C.

According to audio of a board meeting meeting obtained by The Washington Post, the 47th president would like the Kennedy Center’s programming to go “slightly more conservative.” He specifically cited, as examples, “non-woke” musicals, such as Cats, Fiddler on the Roof, Phantom of the Opera, and more.

Cats was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and follows a group of felines (portrayed by cast members as anthropomorphic creatures) as they prepare for the Jellicle Ball, where they decide on a tribe member to leave...

Trump’s Kennedy Center Pushes Back On Idea of Politically Motivated Show Cancellations
Image
The Kennedy Center is pushing back against what it calls “misinformation” about show cancellations under its new leadership.

In social media posts, the organization, which has been overhauled by the Trump administration, said recent show cancellations have either been due to “lack of sales or artist availability” rather than any political or programming changes. The statement came from Roma Daravi, who is listed as the Kennedy Center’s vice president of public relations and formerly worked as Trump’s deputy director of strategic communication.

“In the spirit of transparency and due to the litany of misinformation being spread in the press, it is important to give the public a complete account of program cancellations over the last 6 months. In fact, the only shows under the Kennedy Center programming umbrella that we have cancelled since February 12 were due to lack of sales or artist availability,” the statement reads.

The statement comes...

Lin-Manuel Miranda Cancels ‘Hamilton’ Run at ‘Trump Kennedy Center’: ‘Not Going to Be Part of It’
Image
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. The venue originally announced plans for the yearlong celebration in July 2024, noting the return of Hamilton to the prestigious stage. But that was before Donald Trump was elected for a second term as president and decided to gut the Kennedy Center in favor of declaring himself chairman. Not wanting his story to be part of this narrative, Lin-Manuel Miranda has canceled the scheduled Hamilton run.

“This latest action by Trump...

‘Hamilton’ Cancels Kennedy Center Run After Trump Takeover
Image
Hamilton will no longer play the Kennedy Center next season in light of President Trump’s takeover of the institution.

The hit musical was set to perform at the Kennedy Center in March 2026, at what would have been the show’s third engagement at the theater. However, lead producer Jeffrey Seller cited the firings of the Kennedy Center president and the chairman of the board, as well as the cancellation of programming at the center, as reasons not to move forward.

“Given the recent actions, our show simply cannot, in good conscience, participate and be a part of this new culture that is being imposed on the Kennedy Center,” Seller said in a statement.

In February, Trump became chairman of the institution and ousted Democratic members of the Kennedy Center Board. The contract of Kennedy Center president Deborah F. Rutter was terminated, as was that of chairman David M. Rubenstein,...

The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington DC is responding to the Kennedy Center’s decision to cancel their performance with the National Symphony Orchestra following Donald Trump’s takeover of the institution and takedown of diversity initiatives. However, the Orchestra says it postponed the show before Trump’s leadership takeover.

“We are deeply disappointed with the news that our upcoming Pride performance with the National Symphony Orchestra has been canceled,” the chorus originally wrote in a statement Wednesday. “We believe in the power of music to educate and uplift,...

Issa Rae Cancels Show At Kennedy Center After Donald Trump Takeover
Image
Issa Rae has canceled her sold-out show at The Kennedy Center after Donald Trump was elected chairman.

“Thank you so much for selling out the Kennedy Center for An Evening with Issa Rae,” the Insecure creator and star said in a statement on her Instagram Stories. “Unfortunately, due to what I believe to be an infringement on the values of an institution that has faithfully celebrated artists of all backgrounds through all mediums, I’ve decided to cancel my appearance at this venue.”

Rae assured fans who bought tickets to the event they would be refunded, adding, “Thank you so much for understanding, and I hope to see you soon.”

A page for Rae’s show on The Kennedy Center’s website now yields a 404 Error, meaning the page was deleted after the show’s cancellation.

Shonda Rhimes Resigns From Kennedy Center Board as Trump Installs Himself as Leader
Image
Shonda Rhimes resigned from the Kennedy Center Board on Wednesday.

The Grey’s Anatomy showrunner and Shondaland CEO was also treasurer of the arts institution. Her resignation follows President Trump’s election as chair of the Kennedy Center after a vote from the board. The board also terminated the contract of Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter and announced Richard Grenell, formerly Trump’s ambassador to Germany, as interim president.

Rutter, who had been the Kennedy Center’s third president, serving in the position since 2014, had previously announced plans to step down at the end of 2025.

Singer-songwriter Ben Folds also announced Wednesday that he would resign as artistic adviser to the National Symphony Orchestra and Renée Fleming followed shortly after.

The wave of resignations follows Trump’s statement Friday that he would fire multiple board members at the Kennedy Center, including chairman David M. Rubenstein, and planned to install himself as chair.

Trump Announces He’s Been ‘Unanimously’ Elected Kennedy Center Chairman; Shonda Rhimes Steps Down as Treasurer
Image
President Trump said Wednesday that he’d been “unanimously” elected to lead the board of the Kennedy Center, completing his takeover of the Washington, D.C. cultural center.

The move, which the president announced on his social media site Truth Social, comes after Trump moved to oust members of the organization’s board who had been appointed by his predecessor, Joe Biden.

“It is a Great Honor to be Chairman of The Kennedy Center, especially with this amazing Board of Trustees,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “We will make The Kennedy Center a very special and exciting place!”

On Monday, Trump announced that Richard Grenell, who serves as his envoy for special missions, would be the interim executive director of the Kennedy Center. Trump has criticized the organization for having programming that is overly woke. “No More Drag Shows, Or Other Anti-american Propaganda — Only The Best,” Trump wrote on Truth...

And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.” Speaking about her fear of failure, she added, “When that makes its way into your life, that can be hard to get control of. Russia-born Tycoon Tries “Land Grab” of WME Clients In Legal Battle Over Img Artists
Image
A legal brawl has broken out between mogul Alexander Shustorovich and Img Talent, whose affiliate WME faces the prospect of losing a portion of its music roster as part of a forced sale of the premier classical music management firm Img Artists.

A company owned by the Russia-born U.S. citizen has filed a lawsuit looking to enforce an arbitration ruling that holds that Img Talent must sell its stake in Img Artists to Shustorovich. The deal includes a noncompete that would allegedly bar Endeavor-owned WME from business related to classical, jazz or world music and festivals for three years. Img Talent, also owned by Endeavor, has refused to sign the 2021 purchase agreement.

In arbitration decided last year, it was found that the noncompete is “unquestionably a term or condition” of the deal and “must be complied with” by Img Talent and its affiliates.

“If the artists at WME are up for grabs,...

Queen Latifah, Dionne Warwick, Renee Fleming, Barry Gibb and Billy Crystal Lauded by Kennedy Center for Contributions to American Culture
Image
Washington — The Kennedy Center Honors was a decidedly tuneful affair, with musical talents representing four of its five recipients – vocalists and/or songwriters Dionne Warwick, Renée Fleming, Queen Latifah and Barry Gibb — along with actor/comedian/filmmaker Billy Crystal.

The program, in its 46th year, followed the traditional format that showcases tributes to each honoree by artists and celebs whose identities are undisclosed in advance. It kicked off with a lively parade of dancers down the aisles, led by emcee and former honoree Gloria Estefan and accompanied by Sheila E on drums — a first for the event. Produced again by Done and Dusted Inc., it will air Dec. 27 on CBS.

Omitted this year was one familiar staple at the event – the inclusion of brief video biographies of each honoree that emphasized their childhoods and routes to success. Instead, minimal use of videos embellished career highlights.

The tribute to Warwick led...

The newest group of Kennedy Center honorees, including comedian Billy Crystal and actor Queen Latifah, were feted Sunday night at a star-studded event commemorating their lifetime achievement in arts and entertainment.

The honorees “have helped shape how we see ourselves, how we see each other and how we see our world,” said Biden who then introduced this year’s class with a set of glowing superlatives about their work.

Kennedy Center Honors: A Night Of Disco, Divas, Some Robert De Niro F-Bombs — And A Friendly Joke About Joe Biden’s Age
Image
Robert De Niro took the stage at the Kennedy Center on Sunday and, looking out at the balcony box where honoree Billy Crystal was sitting, told him of his career, “I had no idea you had done so much. And you’ve done it all in such a relatively short amount of time. You’re only 75. That means you’re just about six years away from being the perfect age to be elected president.”

The joke got some of the biggest audience cheers of the night — and a laugh from President Joe Biden, 81, embarking on a re-election campaign where his chronological advantage is, based on polls, top of mind to voters and the source of some doubts.

It was also one of a few references to age throughout Sunday evening’s Kennedy Center Honors which, in addition to Crystal, honored opera singer Renée Fleming, hip hop star and actress Queen Latifah,...

Lise Davidsen Releases Her New Album Christmas From Norway
Leonard Bernstein conducting "Quiz Concert: How Musicscal Are You?" to be broadcast on "The CBS Festival of Lively Arts for Young People" December 10, 1978
10 November 2023 — Today, Lise Davidsen, the most in-demand soprano in the world right now, releases her new album, ‘Christmas From Norway’ via Decca Classics/Universal Music Canada. Hailed as “The living, breathing meteor of the current opera world.” (The I Paper), Lise Davidsen‘s forthcoming album presents a delightful and personally selected collection of traditional Norwegian Christmas music and classic festive favourites, spreading the warm glow of the Scandinavian Christmas spirit. Reflecting on the project, Lise expresses her long-standing desire to create this album. “For Scandinavians, Christmas serves as a beacon of light in the midst of a lengthy winter. Perhaps that is why we embrace it so wholeheartedly.” says Lise.

The ‘Norwegian Starlight’ (quote) is unstoppable: this season alone Lise has starred in the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms, where she ‘swept all before her’ (The i Paper), alongside cellist and label-mate Sheku Kanneh-Mason, during an event she...

Fathom Is Expanding Beyond Faith-Based and Opera Events
Image
Duck Dynasty and the Metropolitan Opera are two very different cultural phenomena, but they have at least one thing in common: Fathom Events, the unique and prolific theatrical distributor based in Denver.

Over the past 20 years, Fathom has mastered the art of finding audiences for one-off cinematic events, from live broadcasts of opera, stage plays and live concert pics to anniversary rereleases of classic Hollywood films. A groundbreaking partnership with The Metropolitan Opera put Fathom on the map. Launched in 2006, The Met: Live in HD program, which sees about 10 operas a year beamed into theaters on Saturdays and Wednesdays, has generated more than $205 million in box office sales and consistently lands on a weekend’s top 10 list.

The company has also made a big impression in the faith-based and anime spaces (again, two disparate genres). Fathom ranked No. 9 on the list of top distributors at the 2022 domestic box office, with...

Box office: ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ returns to first place as Jennifer Lawrence comedy opens in 4th
Image
We’ve had some bad weekends at the box office this year, but few worse than a weekend when the only new movie opens in fourth place and the #1 movie from a previous weekend loses so much business it drops all the way down to third. Read on for the weekend box office report.

That new movie was the R-Rated comedy “No Hard Feelings,” starring Jennifer Lawrence, and we’ll get to that in a bit, but first, we have to look at the movie that topped the box office. That was “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” which made $19.3 million this weekend, down just 29% from last weekend, returning it to first place after weeks in second and third place. After crossing the $300 million mark on Friday, the animated sequel has grossed $317 million domestically. Overseas, “Spider-Verse” added another $22 million this weekend, bringing its global total to $560.3 million.
