Although it’s been months since The Conners concluded its seven-season run, an intriguing update has come to light courtesy of Roseanne Barr. As fans know, Barr starred as the matriarch of the Conner family in the ABC sitcom Roseanne, which ran from October 18, 1988, to May 20, 1997, and was briefly revived from March 27 to May 22, 2018. She, however, wasn’t featured in the direct follow-up series and was the only original cast member not to be, even though she recently claimed that she was asked to make an appearance.
This may seem surprising to many, considering Barr’s history with Roseanne. Back in May 2018, the sitcom’s revival was eventually cancelled due to the actress’ racially “abhorrent” tweet directed at then-president Barack Obama’s former advisor Valerie Jarrett. At the time, President of ABC Entertainment Channing Dungey said in a statement:
"Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values,...

Despite being excluded from The Conners series finale, Michael Fishman has revealed he only feels “gratitude” for the “legacy” the show has left behind. Fishman played D.J. Conner, the son of Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) and Dan Conner (John Goodman), on Roseanne and later reprised the role for The Conners. He starred in the first four seasons of the hit ABC spinoff series before departing ahead of Season 5. Even though D.J.’s story was wrapped up, many fans anticipated him appearing in last week’s series finale. However, Fishman’s character didn’t appear, nor was he even mentioned, save for clips in a flashback montage of the original series. Taking to Instagram on Thursday (April 24), Fishman addressed his absence, saying, “It’s the day after The Conners finale, and I have been inundated with people looking for a reaction. The Conners ended its run this week after seven impressive seasons and what can only be described as a start that grew out of a very controversial situation. What became a spinoff series of Rosanne originally hit ABC as a revival of the hit show, with comedian Roseanne Barr once again leading the Conner family. As quickly as the revival became a hit, Roseanne was abruptly canceled after Barr posted a tweet many perceived to be racist. The concept was retooled to then become The Conners and Roseanne was unceremoniously written out, something that she spoke out about in a blunt manner on more than one occasion. So, how does she feel now that The Conners is over? Despite initial hostility, her reaction to the series coming to an end is probably not one that many expected.

Hollywood icon and The Connersstar John Goodman opens up about the end of the series.
Per Deadline, Goodman discussed the series' finale and the end of one of his most iconic characters - Dan Conner. "It's really hard. It's something I’m going to miss for a while. I'm old and resistant to change," Goodman said. "It was so exciting when we got this together and it seems like it was two weeks ago. Showing up every day and just being here with everybody. It's a great place to work." Goodman added, "It's just being here every day and like [my costar] Jay [R. Ferguson] said, we just come in and laugh a lot. And it's hard."

Actor Michael Fishman is probably best known for his portrayal of D.J. Conner, the youngest of the Conner kids, beginning in 1988 on the classic sitcom Roseanne. He reprised the role in 2018 on the Roseanne reboot, The Conners, and appeared in more than 70 episodes of the series.

The Conners far exceeded anyone’s expectations — including my own. Having risen from the ashes of the Roseanne revival in 2018, this quasi-spinoff went on to run an astounding seven seasons, falling just two seasons shy of matching its predecessor’s original nine-season run. But along the way, the powers that be began to play fast and loose with continuity. Rather than embrace the franchise’s rich history, they often wrote around it (or worse, forgot about it entirely).
Right off the bat, the revival disavowed canon and resurrected Dan Conner. Quite frankly, it was the only way forward. But then...

After lasting much longer than anyone expected it to, The Conners came to an emotional end last night on ABC with a two-episode series finale that featured a lot of archival footage from the original show – with one glaring omission: no Roseanne. Serving as a direct continuation of the beloved sitcom that began in the late 1980s and dominated the 90s, The Conners moved ahead without the involvement of Roseanne Barr, explaining her absence by having her character die of an opioid overdose.
While she was mentioned many times throughout the course of the final season of The Conners, she never once made an appearance in any flashbacks. The grand finale featured footage from the original series of Dan, Jackie, Darlene, and Becky, but not the deceased matriarch of the family. That being said, the finale was centered around her character in a big way, as Dan and the family...

The final season of The Conners has begun airing on ABC. While fans have known since last May that Season 7 would be the show's last, series leads Laurie Metcalf and Lecy Goranson still cannot believe that the Roseanne spinoff is finally coming to a close.
"There's a lot to wrap up and I think the writers are really working hard to get everybody's storylines sort of ... not completed. It's not going to have a big bow tied up with the Conners," Metcalf, who plays Jackie Harris, told People about the show's final six episodes. The Conners happened out of a second thought when Roseanne makers couldn’t move forward with their planned main series continuation. Roseanne Barr’s racist tweets shut down any plans for the planned eleventh season. However, The Conners did not end up becoming another spin-off of a classic sitcom that fizzled out after a couple of seasons.

In the cluttered world of television sitcoms, few shows have the longevity and turbulence of Roseanne. The long-running series spanned an incredible nine-year run in its initial form, and its recent reboot has enjoyed a seven-year lifespan. Of course, as with any show with such longevity, Roseanne saw its fair share of casting swaps. The Conner family famously swapped out its eldest daughter midway through its original series. While the change was somewhat startling, it was deftly offset by clever meta-comedy. Really, it’s not entirely unheard of to swap out actors. With a show like Roseanne, the child actors must be cared for and nourished. As they grow, their ambitions may change. Children leave to attend college or are temporarily pulled from filming to tend to family matters.
And Becky wasn’t the only “swap” in Roseanne. Avid fans of the show will know that the adorable Sal Barone portrayed the family’s son,...

A few family members will be missing from the seventh and final season of The Conners. The show's executive producers, Bruce Helford and Dave Caplan, recently explained why the final episodes won't feature legacy cast members Johnny Galecki (David), Michael Fishman (DJ), and Estelle Parsons (Bev).
Speaking with TVLine, Helford explained how The Conners' truncated final season, consisting of only six episodes, meant that there wasn't enough room to bring back the former cast members. "[David is] very much mentioned, very much alive in the story," Helford said of Galecki's fan-favorite character, who originated on the original Roseanne series. "We love Johnny, he was always welcome, but he has more or less started life anew down in Nashville [following the conclusion of The Big Bang Theory]." Caplan added that while there was potential for a story involving David reconnecting with his children, "there was so much to do in six," implying that even if Galecki had...

The Conners has finally announced the premiere date for its upcoming – and final – season. The Roseanne spin-off will wrap its seven-season run with a six-episode season set to premiere on March 26 on ABC. This news follows last year's announcement that season seven would be the show's final season. The Conners will take over the network's Wednesday 8:00 Pm time slot, which is currently occupied by the Tim Allen and Kat Dennings-led Shifting Gears. In a statement, ABC shared (via TheWrap):
"For over three decades, audiences have followed along with the Conners as they navigate the daily struggles of life in Lanford. Dan, Jackie, Darlene and Becky grapple with parenthood, marriage, financial pressures and aging in working-class America. Through it all—the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns—with love, humor and perseverance, the family prevails."

Roseanne Barr is actively working on her return to television. The Emmy Award-winning comedian — who was let go from the Roseanne revival after making a controversial tweet about Barack Obama's aide Valerie Jarrett — is developing a four to six-episode series that she'll soon start shopping around to networks. The untitled series, which Barr wrote alongside Roseanne producer Allan Stephan, will center on an Alabama farmer who wants to "save America with guns, the Bible, petty crime, and alcoholism."
Per an exclusive report from Variety, Barr described the upcoming project as a "cross between The Roseanne Show and The Sopranos." The central character, who grows and sells drugs like cannabis and magic mushrooms, will save "the United States from drug gangs and China."
She went on to explain the series in more detail, adding that:

If The Conners season 7 wants to provide a satisfying ending to the Roseanne franchise’s overarching story, there are at least ten plots that the sitcom must wrap up. The Conners season 7 has a tricky road ahead. According to a TVLine report from late 2024, the final season of the Roseanne spinoff will be a “Six-episode farewell event” for the series. The Conners’ large cast of characters means that even the show’s normal seasons, which include over twenty episodes, often struggle to give every family member a moment in the spotlight. This makes season 7’s job even tougher.

Quick Links Who Is D.J. Conner? What Happened to D.J. Conner? Fans Are Split on D.J.s Absence
For all its callbacks and references, The Conners lineup lacks one major character from its predecessor and its not Roseanne. Dan Conner (John Goodman) still leads his familial flock. Darlene (Sara Gilbert) is as sarcastic as ever, still bickering with her younger sister, Becky (Lecy Goransen), years after the conclusion of Roseanne. Even Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) returns in many episodes. So, whos missing?
David Jacob D.J. Conner (Michael Fishman) is notably absent from Seasons 5 & 6 of The Conners. The eldest of the Conner children appears in the spin-offs first four seasons before a messy departure. Admittedly, he was never a pivotal part of The Conners, usually relegated to brief appearances. In fact, his daughter, Mary (Jayden Rey), often plays a larger role than her father. Recent documentaries about Albert Brooks and Steve Martin give the comics their rightful flowers for introducing a fresh comic persona to popular culture — the smarmy show-biz performer, polished, unctuous and self-satisfied to the point of absurdity. But Martin Mull, the accomplished musician, painter and comedian who passed away yesterday at the age of 80, deserves to be mentioned in their company.
Fernwood 2 Night, a spin-off of Norman Lear’s Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, is one of those comedies more influential than beloved — no cable network has been running repeats for years. Deborah Vance may have finally opened her door (literally) to her estranged sister Kathy, but that doesn’t mean she’s fully ready to let bygones be bygones.

But when her pregnant daughter DJ wants to invite her aunt for the holiday, Deb reluctantly agrees to invite Kathy to the festive gathering which leads to desecrated gingerbread, a baby gift overstep and (since this is Hacks we’re watching) a dramatic argument fueled by faux-snowballs.

The Conners co-creators Bruce Helford and Dave Caplan were asked if Johnny Galecki or Michael Fishman could reprise their roles in season 7. They revealed that "the door is always open." It nevertheless seems unlikely that Galecki will return, given his effective retirement from acting.
The Conners producers weighed in on the possibility of Johnny Galecki and Michael Fishman reprising their original roles again. They originated characters on Roseanne, the sitcom which the new show directly follows, with Fishman playing eldest son D.J. Conner from episode 2 of Roseanne through season 4 of the sequel and Galecki playing David Healy, with whom D.J.'s older sister Darlene (Sara Gilbert) has a tumultuous relationship, across 98 episodes beginning in Roseanne season 4. The Conners season 7 will be the final season of the show and neither star has so far been confirmed to appear.
