Although it’s been months since The Conners concluded its seven-season run, an intriguing update has come to light courtesy of Roseanne Barr. As fans know, Barr starred as the matriarch of the Conner family in the ABC sitcom Roseanne, which ran from October 18, 1988, to May 20, 1997, and was briefly revived from March 27 to May 22, 2018. She, however, wasn’t featured in the direct follow-up series and was the only original cast member not to be, even though she recently claimed that she was asked to make an appearance.

This may seem surprising to many, considering Barr’s history with Roseanne. Back in May 2018, the sitcom’s revival was eventually cancelled due to the actress’ racially “abhorrent” tweet directed at then-president Barack Obama’s former advisor Valerie Jarrett. At the time, President of ABC Entertainment Channing Dungey said in a statement:

The 43-year-old actor played D.J. Conner on all 10 seasons of Roseanne and reprised his role for first four seasons of the spinoff series. He did not appear in the last three seasons of the show and he didn’t return for the series finale, which aired on April 23.

In a new Instagram video, Michael addressed his absence from the finale after being “inundated with people looking for a reaction.”

Roseanne Barr is actively working on her return to television. The Emmy Award-winning comedian — who was let go from the Roseanne revival after making a controversial tweet about Barack Obama's aide Valerie Jarrett — is developing a four to six-episode series that she'll soon start shopping around to networks. The untitled series, which Barr wrote alongside Roseanne producer Allan Stephan, will center on an Alabama farmer who wants to "save America with guns, the Bible, petty crime, and alcoholism."

Per an exclusive report from Variety, Barr described the upcoming project as a "cross between The Roseanne Show and The Sopranos." The central character, who grows and sells drugs like cannabis and magic mushrooms, will save "the United States from drug gangs and China."

She went on to explain the series in more detail, adding that:

"It's silly and out there. [It will contain] very offensive ideas and a lot of swearing. I live...

The Conners season 7 has a tricky road ahead. According to a TVLine report from late 2024, the final season of the Roseanne spinoff will be a “Six-episode farewell event” for the series. The Conners’ large cast of characters means that even the show’s normal seasons, which include over twenty episodes, often struggle to give every family member a moment in the spotlight. Eric Gilliland, the prolific TV writer and producer who worked on such classic sitcoms as Roseanne, The Wonder Years and That ’70s Show, has died. He was 62.

Gilliland died Sunday of colon cancer in New York City, his sister, Lisa, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Gilliland’s career started in the 1980s, when he was a member of the production staff during the first season of the Sherman Hemsley-starring sitcom Amen and as a writer and story editor on Who’s the Boss?

Most notably, he served as a writer and producer on Roseanne from 1992-96, and his work on the sitcom was recognized with a WGA Award nomination for the season 5 episode “The Dark Ages.”

The Conners co-creators Bruce Helford and Dave Caplan were asked if Johnny Galecki or Michael Fishman could reprise their roles in season 7. They revealed that "the door is always open." It nevertheless seems unlikely that Galecki will return, given his effective retirement from acting.

The Conners producers weighed in on the possibility of Johnny Galecki and Michael Fishman reprising their original roles again. They originated characters on Roseanne, the sitcom which the new show directly follows, with Fishman playing eldest son D.J. Conner from episode 2 of Roseanne through season 4 of the sequel and Galecki playing David Healy, with whom D.J.'s older sister Darlene (Sara Gilbert) has a tumultuous relationship, across 98 episodes beginning in Roseanne season 4. The Conners season 7 will be the final season of the show and neither star has so far been confirmed to appear.

The Conners season 7 now has an official release window. First airing on ABC in 2018, the Roseanne spinoff series follows the members of the titular family as they navigate life after the death of Roseanne Barr's matriarch character.
