Liz finds herself in the middle of quite a mess as she continues to care for Amy. Here’s our Protection episode 2 review.
ITV’s latest drama Protection got off to an explosive start as we were introduced to Siobhan Finneran’s Liz Nyles, an officer working for the witness protection programme in the UK. In episode 1, one of her witnesses was brutally murdered in an ordered hit, leaving her in charge of the family’s young daughter who is now a target herself.
As if that isn’t enough, Liz’s colleague and secret lover Di Brandice was also injured in the hit, but no one has a clue why he was in the safe house in the first place, or how he knew where it was. There’s something particularly American in the set-up of Protection; secret, steamy affairs, a leak in the department, a big crime lord...

Siobhan Finneran plays a tough-as-nails witness protection officer in ITV’s new drama. Here’s our Protection episode 1 review.
The TV landscape is filled to the brim with expensive shows from the likes of HBO, Netflix and Disney+. By now, even the biggest Hollywood stars have also migrated over to the small screen. In that sense, the new ITV drama Protection – which is relatively low budget, and doesn’t contain any A-list actors – feels like a welcome throwback.
The beginning of Protection episode 1 informs us that at any given moment, 3,000 people in the UK are under the witness protection programme. Siobhan Finneran plays Liz Nyles, a no-nonsense witness protection officer tasked with ensuring the safety of a family whose father is about to testify against a UK crime lord.
If everything went well, there would be no Protection, so naturally, the family’s location and identity is breached and a lot of bad things happen.

Thordur Palsson’s “The Damned” is not the only 2024 film with that title. There is also Roberto Minervini’s war drama, set in 1862, which premiered at Cannes. This article is not about that brooding drama. Instead, it is about Palsson’s horror film that stars Odessa Young and Joe Cole in the central roles. It follows a young widow (played by Young) trying to run a fishing outpost in the Arctic bay. While trying to survive through a brutally cold winter in an isolated piece of land, she and a group of fishers start to lose their sanity as they are surrounded by the ghosts of their past misdeeds and regrets.

Harlan Coben has admitted he worries he’ll never have another idea for a TV series or novel. The acclaimed author has found huge success with Netflix adapting Fool Me Once and now Missing You.
The mystery writer's latest series adaptation, Missing You, landed on Netflix last week, featuring Slow Horses’s Rosalind Eleazar as Detective Inspector Kat Donovan searching for her fiancé years after he suddenly disappeared. Even though Coben has several other adaptations of his books in active development with Netflix and Prime Video, he has now revealed his insecurity over writing each new story.

Thordur Palsson’s The Damned coasts on the striking contrasts between the wintry landscapes of its 19th-century setting and the characters who trudge across them in clothes that appear as if they’ve been assembled from blankets or potato sacks. Odessa Young is no less memorable as a young window named Eva, especially in an early scene where she makes it very plain that this woman must always choose her words carefully in the company of men, even among those who so clearly respect her for her savvy.
But there’s evocativeness and then there’s lack of context, and it feels as if the cinematography and Young’s performance are trying to deflect attention from the latter. As indicated by the stories spun by one character (Siobhan Finneran), The Damned draws on Icelandic folklore about the draugr, or reanimated corpse, and from the characters’ names we can, indeed, intuit...

"I wouldn't sleep if I were you... a thing like that never stops." Vertical has revealed the official trailer for the indie horror film The Damned, from young Icelandic filmmaker Thordur Palsson marking his feature directorial debut. Not to be confused with the film about US Civil War soldiers also titled The Damned from this year, this is a haunting horror set on Iceland in the past. A 19th-century widow (starring Odessa Young) has to make an impossible choice when, during an especially cruel winter, a foreign ship sinks off the coast of her Icelandic fishing village. The Damned, an ominous and chilling thriller, follows Eve and her crew as they come across a shipwreck and are faced with the moral dilemma to help or not. An atmospheric blend of drama and psychological horror that captivated audiences at the 2024 Sitges Film Festival this fall. Starring Odessa Young, Joe Cole, Siobhan Finneran,...

Nowhere is safe. This most basic of horror premises — and the sheer simplicity of its implications — has fueled countless classics and scares over the years. One of the biggest early surprises of this year's Tribeca Film Festival, "The Damned," takes this unsettling idea to even greater heights and establishes a can't-miss new talent cut from a similar cloth as Robert Eggers along the way. Icelandic writer/director Thordur Palsson (Netflix's "The Valhalla Murders" miniseries) makes his feature debut with a story set amid the late 1800s in a desolate fishing station, where a tiny Nordic community ekes out a living from a punishing environment that treats them as hostile invaders. The harsh (but gorgeously-shot) tundra and freezing waters trapping them on all sides lends a physical threat as imposing as the labyrinthine Nostromo in "Alien" or the research station in "The Thing." But in a supernatural wrinkle taken straight...

Awards season may well be over for another year in the world of film, with the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes just a distant memory now. But on Sunday evening, one of the biggest nights in British TV, the BAFTA TV Awards — this year hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Ramesh Ranganathan — took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall. And on a night where the two most nominated shows, Black Mirror and The Crown, failed to snag a single win, Happy Valley, Top Boy, and The Sixth Commandment enjoyed great success in key categories, each taking home two awards apiece.
On the night, Sarah Lancashire won Leading Actress for her all-timer of a turn as police sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, her second BAFTA for the same role. The show also snagged the public-voted Memorable Moment award for Catherine and Tommy Lee Royce’s (James Norton) remarkable final kitchen showdown.

Updated with complete winners list: Despite being up for four acting category awards, The Crown‘s final season left the BAFTA TV Awards empty handed tonight in London.
Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Salim Daw and Dominic West were all snubbed, as the the likes of Matthew Macfadyen, Jasmine Jobson, Timothy Spall and Sarah Lancashire all triumphed and the Netflix show went out quietly.
There was also a major surprise in the International category, where little-known French drama Class Act beat the likes of Beef, The Bear and The Last of Us to win the prize. Among the most shocked was the show’s star Laurent Lafitte, who urged the audience to find and watch his show — to the amusement of the audience.

It was a night of surprises at the BAFTA TV Awards, with “The Crown” and “Black Mirror” failing to pick up any awards while “Succession” walked away with only one for Matthew Macfadyen for best supporting actor.
Macfadyen did not attend the awards at London’s Royal Festival Hall, prompting Helena Bonham Carter, who presented the category, to walk off with the iconic gold BAFTA mask with the promise she would get it to Macfadyen.
The international category also saw upset, with frontrunners “Succession,” “Beef” and “The Bear” all failing to win the award. They were instead beaten by little-known French series “Class Act.” It was a fact acknowledged by the show’s shocked lead actor Laurent Lafitte, who, upon accepting the award, told the audience: “Please watch our show.
