Modern sitcoms, rightfully, have a bit of a reputation for being not all that funny. The prevailing sensibility seems to be what a generous reviewer would call “wryly funny” and the like instead of, you know, “funny” without the need for modifiers.

It can be hard when we have to say goodbye to a show we love, but that's just the reality of it sometimes. However, what really hurts is when you get the news that a series has been renewed, and then that decision is reversed.

Over the last few years, that's happened to a quite a number of shows for various reasons. For some, it was the pandemic in 2020. Others, the 2023 writers and actors strikes took a toll. And then there are certain productions that are cancelled and the decision to bring them back was reversed, with no explanation given. As mentioned, there's a good number of series' that have experienced this. But here's four that we're disappointed by the most.

Deadline broke the news that Prime Video had greenlit an adaptation of Julie C. Dao's book series, which will join the streamer's other fantasy shows including The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Wheel of Time. Crystal Liu and James Wong (American Horror Story) are set to be writers, executive producers and co-showrunners. Gemma Chan (The Creator) will executive produce the series. Two companies will produce Rise of the Empress: Viola Davis and Julius Tennon's JuVee Productions (The Woman King) and Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi's Significant Productions.

Noel Fielding will be returning to work following the abrupt cancelation of his Apple TV+ series The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin. The historical comedy was axed by Apple last week mid-way through filming season two.

It was reported that Fielding, who plays the title character in Dick Turpin, had dropped out of the series even though three-quarters of the work had already been completed. The Sun originally claimed that Fielding "failed to come to work" for undisclosed reasons, but there is no official explanation as of yet. Producer Big Talk Studios ultimately decided to completely shut down production on Dick Turpin season two because the project couldn’t be salvaged without Fielding.

Despite the drama on his other series, Apple TV+'s The Completely Made-Up Adventures Of Dick Turpin, Noel Fielding will return to host The Great British Bake-Off. In a new statement, the actor and host's spokesperson insisted that, despite the rumor mill churning out worry given the cancelation of Dick Turpin, Fielding "will be returning" to host the popular reality series.

Fielding's spokesperson has since issued the following statement (which we first encountered via Deadline):

There has been absolutely no discussion about Noel stepping down from 'Bake Off.' We have been in contact with Channel 4 and Love Productions throughout all the speculation and his ‘stepping down’ has never been part of that dialogue. We can confirm he will be returning to co-host the next series of 'Bake Off.'
