Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget Review - Funny & Energetic, The Netflix Sequel Doesn't Disappoint
Image
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget captures the magic of the original with a strong voice cast and hilarious supporting characters. The animation stays true to the original while also appealing to younger audiences, making it a blast overall. Netflix's latest animated film is another success and adds to their impressive catalog. Check it out on Netflix now!

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget has all the momentum of the original and some great new additions to the cast. Director Sam Fell does a good job with a script penned by Karey Kirkpatrick, John O'Farrell, and Rachel Tunnard. Although the film is not as dark as its predecessor, it has the same overall effect. The animation is just as good, and fans of the most recent season of Star Wars: Visions will recognize the work of Pathé and Aardman Animations. Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is certainly more kid-friendly,...

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget Movie Review Rating:

Star Cast: Zachari Levi, Thandiwe Newton, Bella Ramsey, Romesh Ranganathan, Daniel Mays, David Bradley, and Miranda Richardson

Director: Sam Fell

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget Movie Review Out! (Picture Credit: IMDb)

What’s Good: Aardman Animations continues to push their stop-motion art to a new level, and it is quite impressive what they have achieved 23 years after the original.

What’s Bad: The new voice cast does a great job, but they lack the raw energy of the original cast.

Loo Break: You can take a break during some of the musical sequences, they look great, but they are not that vital to the plot.

Watch or Not?: It feels like the right thing to watch the film, even if it is just to support Aardman Animations and their soon-to-be lost craft.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget Review

Plot: Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has finally found her dream — a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk — this time, they’re breaking in!

Review: Aardman Animation has become synonymous with claymation productions. Since the 1970s, Aardman has pioneered stop-motion short films and is the creator of the beloved Wallace & Gromit characters. Despite years of acclaim, Aardman did not make the leap to feature films until 2000’s Chicken Run. Since then, they have released seven feature films, two computer-animated. Twenty-three years after their first movie, Aardman’s sequel...

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget Review: Aardman’s Belated Sequel Lays an Egg
Sam Fell
Sam Fell’s Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget finds Ginger (Thandiwe Newton) and Rocky (Zachary Levi) settled down on a bucolic island sanctuary that’s entirely free of humans, their daring Great Escape-style breakout from Tweedy’s industrial farm now a distant memory. But while they and old friends like Babs (Jane Horrocks) and Fowler (David Bradley) appreciate their hard-won freedom, their young daughter, Molly (Bella Ramsey), is now at an age where this safe haven is beginning to feel like its own form of captivity.

Defying her parents’ wishes and heading out in search of adventure, Molly soon finds herself in trouble on the mainland that the older members of her flock once fought so heroically to leave. And it’s not long before their old foe, Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson), re-emerges with a new diabolical scheme—one that allows the basic premise of Peter Lord and...

Aardman Animations returns to stop-motion poultry greatness with a splendid sequel of daring heroics and comic shenanigans. An alleged utopia lures away unwitting chickens to a crispy fate as bite-sized morsels in a bucket. The film tickles funny bones while offering sly commentary on corporate meat production and the ethical treatment of animals.

Everything We Learned From The Set Of Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget
Image
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is a long-awaited sequel to the original film, with Ginger and Rocky now living on a hidden island with their chicken friends. The cast features both new and returning faces, with Thandiwe Newton and Zachary Levi taking over lead roles. Director Sam Fell wanted to bring a fresh look to the film and take a more female-centric approach. The sequel has a new genre, becoming a heist thriller rather than a war escape drama. The story follows the chickens as they break into Fun-Land Farms to save Ginger's daughter and other captured chickens.

After over 20 years of waiting, Aardman is returning to one of their most iconic properties with Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. Why Rocky And Ginger's Voices Were Recast For Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget [Set Visit]
Image
Voice acting can make or break the success of an animated film. In the past, Hollywood understood that in order to deliver the best possible film, actors able to convey a range of emotions without the assistance of their body language were brought in for the job. At some point, that skill was traded in for celebrity stunt casting, sparking endless debates surrounding casting decisions. That isn't to say that well-known actors don't frequently pull off character-defining performances -- quite the contrary. One of the best examples comes from 2000's "Chicken Run," which featured "Absolutely Fabulous" star Julia Sawalha as Ginger and Mel Gibson as "Rocky." Both performers are still working actors today, so one would think they'd return to voice the characters the long-awaited sequel "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget," right?

Wrong.

"Shazam!" star Zachary Levi has replaced Mel Gibson as Rocky while Thandiwe Newton is joining the cast as Ginger.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget Trailer Teases Rocky and Ginger's Ultimate Heist

Netflix's Latest Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget Trailer Reveals A Kidnapping And A Heist Plot
Image
The last time (and only time) Aardman Animations made a sequel to one of its beloved stop-motion animated features, the result was "A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon," a pretty charming love letter to classic sci-fi cinema. So the bar is set even higher for "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget," the long-awaited follow-up to "Chicken Run." The studio's 2000 riff on "The Great Escape" is still the highest-grossing stop-motion animated movie of all time and, for some animation enthusiasts, remains Aardman's crowning achievement, which is no minor feat. I mean, we're talking about the same studio that "28 Days Later" director Danny Boyle praised for creating "the best action sequence I've ever seen in a film" in "Wallace and Gromit -- The Wrong Trousers."

"Dawn of the Nugget" sees the feathered freedom fighter fowl formerly found flocking on Tweedy's Farm living out their dreams of paradise on a lovely island bird sanctuary.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget Trailer: Aardman Animations’ Long-Awaited Sequel Arrives in December
Image
Arriving nearly a quarter of a century after its predecessor, and this time with no Mel Gibson anywhere to be seen, the sequel to Chicken Run will now land on Netflix exactly a month from today. Helmed by ParaNorman director Sam Fell, the sequel Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget features the voice cast of Thandiwe Newton, Zachary Levi, Bella Ramsey, Romesh Ranganathan, David Bradley, Daniel Mays, Jane Horrocks, Imelda Staunton, Lynn Ferguson, Josie Sedgwick-Davies, Nick Mohammed, and Miranda Richardson, and now ahead of a December 15 release, the first trailer has arrived.

BFI London Review: Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget Expands the Flock in Clever Ways
Jane Horrocks, Imelda Staunton, David Bradley, Lynn Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, Zachary Levi, Josie Sedgwick-Davies, and Bella Ramsey in Chicken Run : La Menace nuggets (2023)
Many people (this reviewer included) scoffed at the announcement of Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. Something about the ludicrous title and 23-year hiatus gave the air of a studio in desperation, or one searching for an Oscar contender. How wrong we were. For in spite of the long wait and changes of personnel––Zachary Levi and Thandiwe Newton replace Mel Gibson and Julia Sawalha; Sam Fell replaces Nick Park and Peter Lord––this latest adventure is every bit as well-crafted, cleverly written, and stuffed with gallinaceous puns as its predecessor.

We rejoin the flock, like the cast, in much-changed circumstances. For one thing, they have built a small island paradise––it looks more like the Shire than Yorkshire––where they are free to work and roam without the threat of human intervention. There is also a lively new addition to the group: Rocky and Ginger’s chirpy chick Molly,...

‘Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget’ Review: Aardman’s Birds of a Feather Flock Together for a Spirited Sequel
Image
The British production company Aardman, best known for award-winning shorts such as the evergreen Creature Comforts and short-to-feature franchises like Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep, specializes in “Claymation,” stop-motion animation done using figurines made of clay and similar material. Even by the glacial standards of animation practice, they take ages to produce new work. You might say their output is rare as hens’ teeth, to quote a Britishism, which is apt because their most successful feature (and the highest-grossing stop-motion film ever) is still Chicken Run (2000), a family-friendly film set on a 1950s chicken farm that stars a brood of fowl with anatomically incorrect, but very Aardman-esque, over-bitey teeth.

But good things come to those who wait, and the studio’s sequel, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, is a worthy successor. Rounding up the feathered friends who made a break for freedom in the last film, led...

‘Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget’ Team On Moving Into New Era With Themes That Entertain & “Make You Think” – Contenders London
Image
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the sequel to Aardman Animation’s 2000 stop-motion hit, is arriving 23 years after the original. Mused director Sam Fell during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders London, “At the end of the first one, you’re kind of a bit sick of chickens. It takes about three or four years to make these things so I think everyone wanted to do new things.”

At the time, he also remarked, “Animated sequels weren’t a big thing back then, Toy Story 2 was probably the first great animated sequel.”

A follow-up had been “in the background” and there were “brainstorming sessions,” but the original Chicken Run “is so brilliant, you can’t do something less than that,” Fell said.

Fast-forward to 2016 and Fell ran into the previous film’s co-director Peter Lord who told him, “We’ve got it, we figured it out.” The trick was a single line: “This time,...

Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget Trailer Has A New Mission, Mrs Tweedy’s Return, And Laser-Guided Exploding Ducks
Image
Get ready to flip, flop, and fly – the chickens of Chicken Run are back in a long-long-long-awaited sequel back to the characters of Rocky and Ginger for the first time since 2000 (albeit with new voices – Zachary Levi and Thandiwe Newton), and as the title suggests, they have a new foodstuff to be fearful of being made into. Check out the teaser trailer:

Admit it: that just put the hugest smile on your face, didn’t it? For a certain generation, Chicken Run was a defining childhood favourite – plus, it remains the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film of all time – and while this is clearly a tad slicker, with an almost sci-fi-ish visual tone, it looks just as charming as you’d hope or expect. If the first film was an extended Great Escape riff, this one seems to be Chicken: Impossible – with our heroes having to break into a highly-secure facility on a special mission.

Aardman’s ‘Chicken Run’ Sequel to World Premiere at London Film Festival
Image
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the long-awaited sequel to Aardman’s 2000 smash hit Chicken Run — still the most successful stop-motion animated feature of all time almost quarter of a century later — is set to get its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.

The film, which The Hollywood Reporter first broke news of back in 2018 and was later swooped upon by Netflix, comes from Oscar and BAFTA-nominated director Sam Fell (ParaNorman, Flushed Away), and will bow on Oct. 14 at London’s Royal Festival Hall, with simultaneous preview screenings at sites around the U.K.

With the London Film Festival having last year screened the world premiere of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which went on to claim the Oscar for best animated feature, Academy favorites Aardman should be hoping that the festival proves to be a similarly successful springboard (while the original Chicken Run missed out on the 2001 awards,...

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget footage was shown at Annecy Film Festival
Image
Coming along twenty-three years after the release of the original Chicken Run, the sequel Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will be released through the Netflix streaming service on December 15th – and even though that date is still six months away, Aardman Animations founder Peter Lord, producer Layla Herbert, and director Sam Fell shared some footage from the film at the Annecy International Film Festival.

As described by Deadline, the footage shown featured the utopian island chicken haven – described by Fell as a sort of “Chicken Wakanda” – created by heroine Ginger after she led the breakout from the Tweedy farm in late 1940s Britain (in the first movie). It’s now the early ’60s and Ginger is the mother with Rocky of rebellious teenager Molly. Ginger in the meantime has buried her rebel side, devoting herself instead to keeping the peace in her island idyll. The arrival of the fortress-like...
