‘Mad Men’ Finale Turns 10: Why ‘Person to Person’ Was a Perfect Hour of TV
Image
Matthew Weiner may have taken Don Draper’s words to heart when he brought Mad Men to its endpoint 10 years ago when the character said, “Make it simple but significant.” Final seasons and series finales can make or break a TV show’s legacy, and Mad Men capped off an acclaimed final season with an even more acclaimed finale, titled “Person to Person,” on May 17, 2015. In that final hour of the AMC period drama, Betty (January Jones) refuses treatment for her lung cancer and declines Don’s offer to take care of their kids. Joan (Christina Hendricks), meanwhile, rejects boyfriend Richard’s (Bruce Greenwood) demands for her and launches a new production company. Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) declines to join Joan in that new venture, instead staying with the ad company McCann Erickson, where she finds romance with coworker Stan (Jay R. Ferguson). Pete (Vincent Kartheiser) heads out for a new...

Real Reason Why ‘The Conners’ on ABC Won’t Return for Season 8
Image
After seven successful seasons and nearly four decades of laughs, tears, and authentic blue-collar storytelling, ABC‘s hit sitcom The Conners has officially closed its final chapter. Can you believe it’s been almost 40 years since we first met this iconic TV family?

The emotional series finale aired on April 23, 2025, giving viewers one last chance to visit the familiar living room with that famous couch and Afghan blanket we’ve all come to love. The Conners first came back into our lives in 2018 as a spinoff following the cancellation of the Roseanne revival, continuing the family’s journey after the death of their matriarch.

But now, after more than 100 episodes of this latest incarnation, the residents of Delaware Street in Lanford have said their final goodbyes. So why exactly won’t we be seeing Season 8? Let’s dig into the real reasons behind the conclusion of this beloved series that...

Rosanne Barr Responds to 'The Conners' Finale Years After Firing
Image
The Conners ended its run this week after seven impressive seasons and what can only be described as a start that grew out of a very controversial situation. What became a spinoff series of Rosanne originally hit ABC as a revival of the hit show, with comedian Roseanne Barr once again leading the Conner family. As quickly as the revival became a hit, Roseanne was abruptly canceled after Barr posted a tweet many perceived to be racist. The concept was retooled to then become The Conners and Roseanne was unceremoniously written out, something that she spoke out about in a blunt manner on more than one occasion. So, how does she feel now that The Conners is over? Despite initial hostility, her reaction to the series coming to an end is probably not one that many expected.

Per TMZ, Roseanne's son and rep, Jake Pentland, spoke about her feelings regarding...

The Conners Was a Good Revival — But If They’d Honored Roseanne History, It Could’ve Been Great
Image
The Conners far exceeded anyone’s expectations — including my own. Having risen from the ashes of the Roseanne revival in 2018, this quasi-spinoff went on to run an astounding seven seasons, falling just two seasons shy of matching its predecessor’s original nine-season run. But along the way, the powers that be began to play fast and loose with continuity. Rather than embrace the franchise’s rich history, they often wrote around it (or worse, forgot about it entirely).

Right off the bat, the revival disavowed canon and resurrected Dan Conner. Quite frankly, it was the only way forward. But then...

‘The Conners’ Bittersweet Finale Proves One Last Time That No Franchise Ever Portrayed Struggle Better
Image
Warning: Contains spoilers about the two-part series finale of The Conners, which aired April 23rd.

Between Roseanne and its sequel/spin-off The Conners, there were well over 300 episodes in the Lanford-verse before the Season Seven premiere of The Conners last month. That already would have been a lot of old story to wrap up before the show’s producers started introducing new plotlines — and it all had to be dispensed with in just six 21-minute episodes. A wrongful-death lawsuit over Roseanne’s fatal overdose pre-Conners gave the abbreviated seventh season a dramatic through-line, and viewers hoped that we’d be seeing them off into a more comfortable (imaginary) future. But if the ending of The Conners hadn’t been bittersweet, it wouldn’t have been The Conners: no franchise has ever portrayed struggle better.

Dan (John Goodman) has spent most of the season feeling deeply ambivalent about the lawsuit,...

‘The Conners’ EPs on Honoring the ‘Roseanne’ Legacy in the Series Finale and the Unscripted Moments That Were Included
Image
Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for the series finale of “The Conners,” streaming on Hulu as of April 24.

After 37 years, the adventures of Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky and the rest of the family have come to an end with the series finale of “The Conners” on ABC Wednesday night. And although those kinds of goodbyes can be tricky, especially with a show that has so much history — both on-camera and off — executive producer Dave Caplan tells Variety, “We felt a tremendous responsibility to get this right.”

In a way, Caplan and fellow executive producers Bruce Helford and Bruce Rasmussen were aware of the pitfalls that an end of a series can present, keeping it storyline-driven and character-driven. And balancing keeping the conclusion sentimental when it should be, but funny as well. They felt like the “stewards” of the show and the characters, they say.

“It has a certain legacy...

‘The Conners’ Creators Unpack Show’s Emotional, Unscripted Ending: ‘It Was a Surprise to Us’
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “The Conners” Season 7 Episodes 5 and 6.

“The Conners” have said goodbye after 15 seasons across three shows in 37 years.

The ABC sitcom, a spinoff born out of the cancellation of its megahit “Roseanne” reboot, wrapped its run Wednesday with a heartwarming finale that left the beloved TV family a little bit better than when we found them.

The six-episode Season 7 followed as Dan (John Goodman) and Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) worked to sue the opioid company that provided the medication that ultimately led to Roseanne Conner’s accidental overdose. Meanwhile, each member of the Conner family dealt with significant growth, including Mark (Ames McNamara) using his hacking skills to land a good job in New York without going to college; Becky (Lecy Goranson) keeping with her sobriety and landing a good job; Darlene (Sara Gilbert) repairing her relationship with Ben

The finale also resolved the lawsuit with he opioid company,...

John Goodman Says Bidding Farewell To ‘The Conners’ Is “Really Hard”: “A Great Place To Work”
Image
More than 35 years later, John Goodman is saying goodbye to Dan Conner.

With the two-part series finale of The Conners airing Wednesday at 8/7c on ABC, the Emmy winner said the seven-season revival has gone by “so fast” as he opened up about bidding farewell to the patriarchal character he originated on Roseanne in 1988.

“It’s really hard. It’s something I’m going to miss for a while. I’m old and resistant to change,” he told People, adding: “It was so exciting when we got this together and it seems like it was two weeks ago. Showing up every day and just being here with everybody. It’s a great place to work.”

Goodman said, “It’s just being here every day and like [my costar] Jay [R. Ferguson] said, we just come in and laugh a lot. And it’s hard.”

After ABC gave the series an abbreviated renewal last May...

‘The Conners’ Gives Becky the Spotlight — For Once
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for the April 16th episode of The Conners.

The cold open of this week’s episode of The Conners — “Danny Boy, the Interview, the New Hire and the Hanging Chad” — quickly reminds us of the many storylines currently active on the show. Mark (Ames McNamara) is still making money as a hacker; his mother, Darlene (Sara Gilbert), has kicked him out of the house over it. Dan (John Goodman) is pursuing a lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company that made the opioids the character of Roseanne used to induce a fatal overdose after the actor who played her was fired from the show. Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) is trying to rejoin the local police force, despite her advanced age. And Darlene’s husband Ben (Jay R. Ferguson) is so consumed launching a new magazine that Darlene barely sees him, and has been replacing his company with Chad (Seth Green...

‘The Conners’ Is Running Out of Chances to Say Acab
Image
Anyone who has been watching Jackie Harris (Laurie Metcalf) since her character’s 1988 début on Roseanne probably could have predicted that, when she retired, it wasn’t going to take. Jackie has always seemed like someone who wakes up at 60 mph and spends the day trying to burn off all her nervous energy, so I, at least, wasn’t that surprised that after retiring in the sixth season of The Conners, she almost immediately tried to find a new way to spend her time productively. Considering Jackie’s played by a woman who will be 70 soon, returning to the police force isn’t necessarily the first suggestion I’d make for her. On the other hand, given the franchise’s tendency to portray Lanford cops as respectful and even apologetic as they carry out their duties, maybe Jackie’s justified in thinking the job could be relatively low-stress. The question...

Did ‘The Conners’ Just Introduce Two New Characters to Ruin Darlene’s and Dan’s Lives?
Image
When an actor gets cast for a guest shot on a long-running show, it must be hard not to dream of getting written in as a full-time member of the ensemble. It’s hard to imagine The Golden Girls without Sophia (Estelle Getty), or Parks & Recreation without Andy (Chris Pratt), but they weren’t originally envisioned as series regulars. Neither was Frasier (Kelsey Grammer), and he ended up headlining a Cheers spin-off — twice! Seth Green and Jane Lynch are probably under no illusions about their function in The Conners, however. There are only four more episodes to air after this week’s, so they’re probably here to stir up trouble.

We already knew both actors would be débuting in Season Seven. The news of Green’s and Lynch’s casting was announced in March. Tonight’s episode, the season’s second, gave us our first glimpse at both of them,...

The Conners Season 7: Cast, Streaming Details, Plot For the Finale and All You Need to Know
Image
The Conners happened out of a second thought when Roseanne makers couldn’t move forward with their planned main series continuation. Roseanne Barr’s racist tweets shut down any plans for the planned eleventh season. However, The Conners did not end up becoming another spin-off of a classic sitcom that fizzled out after a couple of seasons.

The sitcom has reached its seventh and final season, which will consist of six episodes. The series will follow the Conner family and explore their struggles as a working-class family in the fictional Lanford, Illinois. Sitcom veterans, including John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, and Katey Sagal, appear in lead roles in the series.

The Conners: Season Seven Ratings + Viewer Votes
The Conners series was created following the sudden cancellation of the Roseanne revival. Many believed the spin-off would be quickly cancelled without Roseanne Barr, but the comedy became one of ABC's highest-rated scripted shows. Now, after seven years, the sitcom is coming to an end. Many of the characters have been around for decades, and the brood was revived once. Could The Conners return for an eighth season someday? Stay tuned.

A family comedy series, The Conners TV show stars John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, Emma Kenney, Ames McNamara, and Jay R. Ferguson. Sean Astin, Katey Sagal, and Nat Faxon recur. Picking up where the revival of the sitcom left off, this series follows the extended working-class Conner family that's led by patriarch Dan Conner (Goodman) and two of his three adult children -- Becky (Goranson)...

‘The Conners’ May Get A Bright Ending From A Dark Windfall
Image
There are probably fans who mostly remember the original run of Roseanne for episodes about topics like Roseanne (played by the mononymous comic), her husband Dan (John Goodman) and her sister Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) smoking their old weed stash and getting paranoid, or about Becky (Alicia Goransen) loudly farting at school. Those fans might find The Conners jarring: Becky grapples with alcoholism, then has a baby with an undocumented immigrant who gets deported; Darlene (Sara Gilbert) tries to support her son Mark (Ames McNamara) when he gets punished at school for Pda with his boyfriend; Dan, still working, gets crushed by a vending machine — and all that is before Covid makes the family’s finances even more perilous.

It can be tough to watch! But now, the premiere of the show’s seventh and final season seems like it might be setting up a series finale that falls somewhere between...

‘The Conners’ Casts Seth Green In Recurring Role For Final Season

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Close Friend Didn’t Enjoy His ‘The Great Gatsby’ Audition: “They probably just did it as a favor to Leo”

Navigating the tricky terrain of friendship and ambition can sometimes lead to unexpected results in pursuing success. Take, for instance, Jay R. Ferguson, an actor known for his role in The Conners and a close friend of The Great Gatsby actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

When he auditioned for the 2013 adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s timeless classic, Ferguson found himself in a surprisingly awkward position.

Ferguson recounted feeling “uncomfortable” during The Great Gatsby audition as the weight of his friendship with DiCaprio loomed. He believed the audition was being passed down to him just because he was a close friend of the lead actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, who played Jay Gatsby in the movie.

‘The Conners’ Gets Premiere Date for Final Season
Image
The end is in sight for The Conners.

ABC has set a March 26 premiere date for the comedy’s seventh and final season. The Conners is ending with an abbreviated, six-episode run; ABC announced the final season in May 2024.

The show will take up its usual 8 p.m. Wednesday time period for the final episodes. That spot’s current occupant, Shifting Gears, is scheduled to conclude its first season on March 19.

Season seven will bring the series to a total of 112 episodes, an increasingly rare accomplishment for a network comedy series. Only one other current live-action broadcast comedy — CBS’ The Neighborhood — has more than 100 episodes to its name. (Fox’s animated stalwarts The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers are also long past that mark.)

The Conners — a spinoff of ABC’s 2018 Roseanne revival that was canceled after one season following racist remarks by star Roseanne Barr — has been a solid performer throughout its run.

“He called us by our character names”: Sorry Breaking Bad, David Lynch Was So Obsessed With 1 TV Show That He Refused to Call the Actors by Their Real Names
Image
If you ask anyone to name their favorite TV show from the golden era of television, Breaking Bad would probably be at the top of the list for many. From Walter White’s dramatic transformation to the unforgettable Jesse Pinkman, it was a show that tempted audiences in a way few others did.

But there was one man who, despite all the love for Breaking Bad, simply couldn’t bring himself to give it the same kind of devotion.

David Lynch | image: kargaltsev, licensed under Cc-by-2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Instead, it was a different show that left him hooked—Mad Men. And when it came to Mad Men, Lynch didn’t just admire it from afar. He lived in its world, to the point where he refused to address the actors by their real names. For Lynch, Peggy and Don weren’t just characters—they were the only versions of Elisabeth Moss and Jon Hamm.

Who Plays Ponyboy Curtis In The Outsiders?
Image
Francis Ford Coppola is responsible for half a century of onscreen leading men. The greatest Hollywood actors of the later 20th century, from Al Pacino to Robert De Niro to Robert Duvall? They also got their big break in one of the first two "Godfather" films. That's not to say these actors wouldn't have been stars without Coppola's movies (none of them are exactly one-hit wonders), but the New Hollywood truly put several artists in the right place at the right time to produce classic films.

In 1983, Coppola did it again with "The Outsiders," adapting S.E. Hinton's 1967 coming-of-age novel about several low-class teenage "Greasers" in 1960s Oklahoma. The main ensemble was played by several then up-and-comers, now-stars: Ralph Macchio as the sensitive Johnny Cade, Matt Dillon as wannabe tough guy Dallas "Dally" Winston, and Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze as brothers Sodapop and Darrel "Darry" Curtis. Diane Lane also appears as Cherry,...

Is Ben Leaving The Conners? Exit Scare Explained
Image
Recent developments on ABC’s The Conners have caused viewers to question whether Jay R. Ferguson's Ben Olinsky exited the show.

ABC’s Roseanne continuation was part of the first big wave of television revivals when it premiered in 2018. However, the series’ leading lady, Roseanne Barr herself, was fired from Roseanne shortly thereafter for some controversial tweets (read more about Barr's exit here).

Thus, The Conners was born, utilizing all the cast members from Roseanne’s revival, sans Barr, whose family matriarch died off-screen. The spin-off has enjoyed a good deal of success and was recently renewed for a seventh and final season.

‘The Conners’ to End with Season 7 on ABC
Image
The Conners will get one final run on ABC.

The network has picked up a seventh season of the comedy, which will be its last on the network. It’s also set to be the shortest of any of the show’s seasons, with an episode count likely in the single digits. The shortest previous season of The Conners was its first, which ran 11 episodes; this year’s strikes-shortened edition has 13. The series as a whole will have 106 episodes to its credit after the May 22 season finale.

The Conners premiered in fall 2018, a few months after ABC canceled its highly rated Roseanne revival following racist remarks by star Roseanne Barr. After the show’s producers, including Tom Werner and Sara Gilbert, negotiated Barr’s exit, ABC gave a series order to The Cooners, which follows the other members of the Conner family (Roseanne’s character dies offscreen before the show...

The TV and Movie Line Readings We Can’t Get Out of Our Heads
Image
A lot goes into a good performance – from research to blocking to facial expressions and beyond. But at its core, an acting performance comes down to reading lines of dialogue on a piece of paper. Many actors do their level best to read the lines as written. Some other actors, bless them, like to get a little more creative.

Television and film are filled with fascinating line readings from actors. Whether it’s an emphasis on an unusual syllable or just an outright scream, certain performers are able to make dialogue feel particularly vibrant. As pop culture travelers ourselves, we’ve come across many interesting line readings over the years. What follows are some of our favorites. Be sure to share yours in the comments as well!

“There were a lot of…fatalities.”

How ‘The Conners’ Went From Nearly Doa to a Milestone 100th Episode — and What’s Next: ‘There’s So Much More to Do’
Image
For any television series reaching its 100th episode, looking back is a given, but there aren’t many shows with a 35-year history like ABC’s “The Conners,” the sitcom following the blue-collar family with an affinity for getting knocked down by life’s struggles while making us laugh along the way. “It’s just lucky, I guess,” says John Goodman, who plays patriarch Dan Conner. “Now all of a sudden, it’s 100 episodes. I can’t believe how fast the time went by, but I guess that’s just because I’m getting old.”

We first met the Lanford, Ill., clan on Oct. 18, 1988, when “Roseanne,” named for brash standup comedian Roseanne Barr, premiered on ABC. The cast included Roseanne’s big-hearted husband Dan (Goodman), their three salty young children Becky (Lecy Goranson), Darlene (Sara Gilbert) and D.J. (Michael Fishman) as well as Roseanne’s erratic sister Jackie (Laurie Metcalf...

The Conners Season 6’s 100th Episode Death: 8 Roseanne Spinoff Characters Who Could Be Killed Off
Image
Becky's death would reshape The Conners, impacting her daughter Beverly-Rose immensely. Dan's potential death would alter the course of the series, with far-reaching consequences. Crystal's medical struggles make her a likely candidate for a season 6 exit, affecting Beverly-Rose.

While The Conners season 6, episode 7 promises a character death, it is tricky to guess which of the Roseanne spinoff’s cast members might be exiting the series. The Conners has a large ensemble cast and the show’s lineup has only grown bigger since the death of its former heroine, Roseanne. Roseanne’s season 10 revival became The Conners in 2018 when Roseanne herself was killed off after her actor, Roseanne Barr, made racist comments on Twitter. Since then, actors Nat Faxon and Jay R. Ferguson have joined the show’s full-time cast as Jackie and Darlene’s respective love interests, Neville and Ben.

While The Conners season 7 may get rid of these two...

The Conners Season 6 Premiere's Funniest Jokes Underlined The Roseanne Spinoff’s Ben Problem
Image
Ben's limited role in The Conners season 6 premiere draws attention to his lack of relevance in the series, as his character is mainly portrayed as Darlene's love interest. Ben's presence in the episode seems forced and unnecessary, especially considering practical issues such as his ownership of a hardware store with Dan, making it unlikely for him to be free at the same time as the Conners. The show dropped Ben's strong character arc as Mark's guardian in the season 6 premiere, limiting Ben's relevance and potentially missing an opportunity to explore their shared story further.

While Jay R. Ferguson’s Ben got some of the best lines in The Conners season 6 premiere, his part in the episode still drew attention to his limited role in the Roseanne spinoff. When Ben was introduced to Roseanne’s spinoff The Conners, he was a magazine editor who often butted heads with the sardonic Darlene.
