Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, and Amy Ryan in À quel prix? (2020)
Official Trailer for Legal Drama 'Worth' with Keaton & Tucci & Ryan
Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, and Amy Ryan in À quel prix? (2020)
"We can't bring them back, but we can help their loved ones." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for the indie legal drama Worth, which first premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival last year. They will be debuting this streaming in September in less than a month, just in time for the upcoming 9/11 anniversary – because it's about an attorney in Washington D.C. who battles against cynicism, bureaucracy and politics to help the victims of 9/11. Ken Feinberg learns a lesson in empathy when he is faced with the near-impossible task of determining how to compensate families who suffered incalculable losses on September 11th. Based on true events. This stars Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, Amy Ryan, plus Tate Donovan, Shunori Ramanathan, Talia Balsam, Laura Benanti, Marc Maron, Ato Blankson-Wood, Chris Tardio, Carolyn Mignini, and Victor Slezak. It's so important to tell these stories, but it always makes me sad they encountered...

‘Worth’ Review: The Curious Cost of Compensation for 9/11 Victims | Sundance 2020
In the early moments of Sara Colangelo’s Worth, lawyer Ken Feinberg (Michael Keaton) tells a classroom full of students that while philosophers can debate the value of human life, in the law profession, you can live in the realm of numbers. While assigning a dollar value to someone’s life may seem cold, there’s a bizarre comfort in compensation and that someone can be held responsible in the face of tragedy. What makes Worth impressive is how it dives into the complicated space between hard pragmatism and necessary compassion. The central conflict explores why individualism is essential in …...

‘Worth’: Film Review
Fred Rogers in Mister Rogers' Neighborhood (1968)
As a child, when future TV host Fred Rogers would see scary images on the news, his mother would tell him, “Look for the heroes.” If Fred were a boy today, she’d add, “Look for Ken Feinberg.” Feinberg, the lawyer at the center of Sara Colangelo’s “Worth,” specializes in putting a price tag on human tragedy. He’s brought his calculator to the shootings in Sandy Hook, Aurora, Virginia Tech and Orlando, and tallied spreadsheets for victims of the Boston Bombing, the Bp oil spill, Agent Orange, asbestos, bad breast implants, bad car ignitions, Boeing 737s, the Catholic Church and Penn State. Feinberg even haggled the value of the Zapruder Tape.

Here, Colangelo (“The Kindergarten Teacher”) and screenwriter Max Borenstein are only interested in Feinberg’s most famous case: the payout for the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. The two-year grind involved more than 7,000 families and turned the disaster accountant,...

John Hickenlooper
9/11 Mediator To Help On Aurora Shooting Victims' Fund
John Hickenlooper
Denver — Facing criticism from families of victims of the Aurora movie theater shooting, officials handling the distributions of donations are consulting with a mediator who oversaw compensation for victims of the Sept. 11 terror attacks and the Virginia Tech shooting.

An email sent to victims' families said that Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper's office, the 7/20 Committee and the Community First Foundation have initiated discussions with Kenneth Feinberg and plan to meet with him Friday in Denver.

Feinberg was traveling and couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

The mass shooting killed 12 people and wounded 58 others. Former University of Colorado, Denver, graduate student James Holmes has been charged in the July 20 attack.

Last week, the families of 10 people killed and at least a dozen of those wounded called on Hickenlooper and lawmakers to appoint an independent arbitrator to oversee distribution of the donations.

The families say they've been frustrated by an initial plan...

iFive: Gulf Still Oily, Illinois Legislates for Solar, the Mega-Range Ev, Rim Wants Mobile Ad Network, Spotify Chief's New Home
While you were sleeping, innovation was drumming its fingers impatiently on the desk, doing a double take, and thinking, "Wowzers, what if there were a mouse shaped like that?"

1. Although the White House claims that all the oil has gone from the Gulf, scientists are taking a different line, reports The Guardian. It's dropped below the surface and getting into phytoplankton, with around 75% of the oil still in the water, compared to the Government's claims that the same amount had dispersed. Meanwhile, approval numbers for Bp have doubled--but, at only 33%, it's still nothing to write home about. The mediator in charge of the legal claims, Kenneth Feinberg, has warned against beating up on Bp. Feinberg, hired by Obama, is heading up the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, which will be taking over the mammoth task of processing claims from the oil firm.

2. The co-founder of Tesla, Martin Eberhard, has gone on...

The First $3 Billion Is the Hardest: Bp Starts Paying Up
Bp this week deposited the first $3 billion into what will ultimately be a $20 billion escrow account for claims made by Gulf residents affected by the recent oil disaster. After an additional $2 billion later this year, Bp will continue to deposit $1.25 billion each quarter until it reaches the magic $20 billion.

This is Bp's first baby step into making things right with its record-breaking oil well blowout. But as Associate Attorney General Tom Perrelli noted in a statement, "We have made clear that the company still needs to ensure that the necessary funds will be available if something happens to the subsidiary that established the trust and we look forward to completion of an appropriate security arrangement in the near future." In other words, Gulf residents won't receive checks any time soon.

Once Bp is ready to offer up cash, though, it will be a difficult process--just try to imagine how many...

B.P. to Set Aside $20 Billion For Cleanup; That Sounds Like a Lot, But Is It?
Obama and his B.P. frenemies. Photo by Pete Souza.Well, well: President Obama’s speech last night was not quite the ineffective grandstanding we all thought it was! Per The New York Times: “The White House and Bp tentatively agreed on Wednesday that the oil giant would create a $20 billion fund to pay claims for the worst oil spill in American history.” Twenty billion dollars! And that's in addition to the $1 billion the company has already used to sponge down birds, dispose of possibly toxic garbage, and coach a ragtag team of submersible robots. The fund will be handled by Kenneth Feinberg, the all-star attorney who supervised the government’s payments to 9/11 victims. Still, talks continue between Obama and B.P. The White House has demanded that there be “no ceiling on Bp's liability if costs of the oil-spill cleanup and recovery go higher. Bp officials are pressing for some limits,...

Jimi Hendrix Biopic in the Works
Legendary Pictures is developing a feature film about the life of Jimi Hendrix, arguably rock n roll's greatest guitarist and showman, whose performance of The Star-Spangled Banner remains one of the seminal moments of the Woodstock Festival. Hendrix struggled as a musician for much of the 1960s, until he left for Europe and made his mark. He returned to the Us, and as evidenced by filmed performances at fests like Woodstock, Monterey Pop and Isle of Wight, Hendrix changed the game, from his technique to his fashion sense and theatrics that included lighting guitars on fire and smashing them onstage. He flamed out not long after reaching icon status, as his death in 1970 came just three years after the release of the first Jimi Hendrix Experience album, "Are You Experienced."
