The 15 Best Jane Austen Movies, Ranked
Image
Jane Austen needs no introduction. She's the original rom-com queen, writing novels in Regency-era England that gently satirized class and gender roles while also giving her readers classic romances between characters who have stood the test of time. So when it comes to novelists whose work has been adapted for the screen on a fairly regular basis, Jane Austen is right up there with Stephen King.

Year after year, we get different Jane Austen interpretations of her most popular novels, some placed within an appropriately period setting, others given a modern-day update. But no matter when they take place, they've all got that special something that allowed Jane Austen to stand the test of time: relatable heroines and their lovable but occasionally toxic love interests.

Although there have been some truly excellent Jane Austen miniseries adaptations, for the purposes of this piece, we're focusing on the film versions of her work.

Rina Sawayama Joins Apple TV+ Series ‘Prodigies’
Image
Exclusive: Rina Sawayama joins the Apple TV+ romcom Prodigies cast alongside creator Will Sharpe and Ayo Edebiri, who also executive produce.

The series follows Didi (Edebiri) and Ren (Sharpe), two ex-child prodigies who have been together since they were children. Now in their early 30s, they are starting to question whether their very ordinary existence is living up to the extraordinary promise of their childhood. Inevitably, they find themselves asking the same questions about their relationship. As individual hopes and needs feed into and conflict with their shared lives, the series challenges the fallacy at the heart of romantic storytelling – that the tale is over when the heroes get together. In life, surely, that is just the beginning?

Sawayama will play Ren’s sister Hana in a recurring role.

Prodigies is created and written by Sharpe, who also serves as an executive producer,...

John Krasinski Explains How 'Jack Ryan' Movie Differs From TV Series
Image
John Krasinski, who portrayed the titular CIA analyst in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, has teased the forthcoming feature film and explained how it differs from the hit TV series, which aired on Prime Video from 2018 to 2023, and ran for four seasons. The movie was confirmed to be in production in February, with Krasinski reprising his lead role, but aside from one image to mark the beginning of filming, the project is quite elusive. Thankfully, the franchise's main star has now provided some insight into what fans can expect from the spin-off.

Krasinski is the latest actor to bring Jack Ryan to the big screen, following previous interpretations by Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Clear and Present Danger), Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears), and Chris Pine (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit), but he admits that it's "a whole different ballgame" to shooting the series. Diane Kruger and ‘Little Disasters’ Cast Usher in ‘Big Little Lies’-Esque Drama: “It Leaves You Breathless”
Image
Diane Kruger‘s preparation for her role in the upcoming psychological thriller Little Disasters was a reflective process.

“It’s a very weird time for any woman, right?” the Troy and Inglourious Basterds star tells The Hollywood Reporter about becoming a mother. “You lose control of who you were before. You fear you’re never going to get that back, and everything changes overnight.” She adds: “It’s wonderful and joyful and all those things as well, but it is definitely a strange time in your life.”

The Paramount+ U.K. & Ireland six-episode show, premiering this year, is based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Vaughan (Anatomy of a Scandal). Tackling postnatal anxiety, parenting, marriage and maternal Ocd, it follows four very different women — Jess (Kruger), Liz (Jo Joyner), Charlotte (Shelley Conn) and Mel (Emily Taaffe) — who become fast friends when they have not much else in...

Douglas Hodge attends the Opening Night of Sting's new musical The Last Ship.
Douglas Hodge and Betty Gabriel are among the recruits for the new Jack Ryan film, starring John Krasinski. More here.

The cast of the new Jack Ryan movie is beginning to expand, with filming presumably now not too far away.

John Krasinski follows Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine by playing Ryan on the big screen. In his case, he’s had a fair amount of practice too, having played Ryan on the hit television series, that’s cunningly entitled Jack Ryan.

It may well be that the new film, which is being backed by Amazon MGM, will also go by that name as well. It’s been known for a while that John Krasinski, Sienna Miller, Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly are in the ensemble.

Now, some further additions have also been announced. Betty Gabriel, JJ Feild, Max Beesley and Douglas Hodge are signing on the dotted line.

Marvel's world-building since the dawn of the MCU in 2008's Iron Man has been outstanding, as the version of the world in the MCU, dubbed Earth-616, is incredibly believable and as close to real life as it can be when inhabited by all manner of superpowered beings. The 30 Best Spy/Espionage TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Genres within television and film have evolved over the years, with several combining to form new genres and subgenres. One such instance has been spy and espionage TV and movies, which incorporate elements of thrillers, dramas, and more action-oriented fare. Television makes a good outlet for the genre, allowing for first-rate action without requiring the big budget of a movie, and able to develop slow-burn plots over many episodes instead of one two-hour story.

More often than not, spy TV shows emphasize the genre's action elements, comparable to movies like James Bond. More rarely, though, shows will lean more toward the espionage side of these stories, in which spies and agents are sent deep into the heart of a convoluted and intriguing plot. The best shows in the genre balance the two, combining harrowing thrills with fascinating characters and clever plots.

‘Little Disasters’: Diane Kruger Revealed In Exclusive Images Of Buzzy Paramount+ Series
Image
Exclusive: Here are a couple of exclusive images of Inglourious Basterds star Diane Kruger in buzzy Paramount+ series Little Disasters.

Cannes Award-winning actor Kruger plays Jess in the adaptation of the Sarah Vaughan novel. When she takes her baby daughter to hospital with a head injury that she can’t explain, her close friend and on-duty A&e doctor Liz must make the excruciating decision of whether to call social services on her longtime friend. This decision sets in motion a chain of events that show how one moment can fracture and nearly destroy entire families and friendships. The show also stars Jo Joyner, Patrick Baladi (Ted Lasso), Shelley Conn, Emily Taaffe, JJ Feild, Ben Bailey Smith and Stephen Campbell Moore.

Kruger has had far more movie roles than TV but she did play Detective Sonya Cross in FX’s version of The Bridge last decade. The German actor, who broke out in 2004’s epic war film Troy, was described as an “intelligent and dynamic actress, whose sheer presence brings with it a unique quality that leaves you inspired” by Little Disasters director Eva Sigurdardottir.

“Attaching Diane allowed me to explore sides of Jess’ character in deeper ways than I had anticipated,” she added. “Little Disasters is a story of a warm and loving mother who is hiding a dark secret, and Diane navigated that character so elegantly, with relatable and warm performances, as well as truly haunting and thrilling moments.”

That relatability attracted Sigurdardottir to Little Disasters, she told us, along with a “tension and thriller engine rooted in very relatable and familiar domestic settings.”

“I am a filmmaker who is drawn to brutally real and gritty stories, and here we had a glamorous and aspirational setting, yet with a terrifying central conflict – a hurt child,” she added.

Marianna Abbotts is exec producing for Big Boys producer Roughcut TV, which has recently moved into drama. She said she “fell in love with” Vaughan’s novels after reading Anatomy of a Scandal. “Sarah often writes about professional women who are forced to make impossible decisions. At the heart of Little Disasters is a really difficult moral dilemma when one friend is forced to call social services on another,” she added.

To aid with tackling these sensitive topics, the Roughcut team worked closely with Vaughan along with multiple advisors. “We wanted to portray the issues in the book accurately and it was extremely important to get that right,” said Abbotts. “We consulted medical, police and social service advisers who guided us with accuracy and sensitivity while understanding the need to tell a dramatic story.”

Little Disasters is a six-part series for Paramount+ UK and Ireland. Ruth Fowler and Amanda Duke adapted the series for the screen with Roughcut Television EPs Ash Atalla, Alex Smith and Abbotts on board alongside Vaughan. Simon Judd EPs for Fremantle, Sigurdardottir is the director and Myf Hopkins serves as the producer. The series was commissioned by Sebastian Cardwell and Paul Testar and will premiere next year. Fremantle is handling global sales.

New Amsterdam Couples Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
New Amsterdam's couples added romance to the thrilling medical drama, with some relationships proving more successful than others. Couples like Floyd Reynolds and Evie Garrison had lasting impact, while others like Max Goodwin and Alice Healy struggled to find healing. The central romance between Max Goodwin and Helen Sharpe was a fan-favorite, but unforeseen circumstances led to an abrupt end.

While it was always a thrilling medical drama as well, the various New Amsterdam couples always added a lot of romance to the story. The series follows the lives of some dedicated and caring doctors at the titular New York City hospital who were always busy saving lives and working around the bureaucracy of the job, but they still made time to pursue their love lives as well. Of course, many of these relationships were as dramatic as the work in the hospital and even overlapped with their professional lives at times.

10 Best Jane Austen Movie Adaptations
Image
Austen's novels have stood the test of time and continue to be popular today, with numerous film and TV adaptations. Movie adaptations of Austen's work vary in their faithfulness to the original plot, but the best ones capture the timeless elements and add a new perspective. The movie adaptations highlighted in the article showcase the comedic wit, social satire, and romantic allure of Austen's novels.

Jane Austen only completed six novels in her lifetime, but they have remained popular for centuries, and been adapted into dozens of movies and TV shows. Austen spent her entire life in England, and her novels comment upon the British aristocracy that she saw all around her. Although she wasn't afforded the same freedoms as men, she painted the world which she knew in captivating detail, and her novels wove in subtle critiques of the structural misogyny of the time. Austen had a beautifully lyrical style of writing,...

Neve Campbell on Returning to ‘Scream’ Amid Franchise Fallout: “I Would Not Be Surprised to Get a Call”

The Scream franchise has lost a lot of blood in recent months, but the beloved star who has played Sidney Prescott in five films over 25 years isn’t ruling out a return.

The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Neve Campbell on Saturday afternoon at the BAFTA Tea Party in Beverly Hills, where she offered up a “we’ll see” as to whether she would reprise her franchise-leading role in the near future. The next installment, which is currently in the works, has been in peril since November when Melissa Barrera was fired over social media posts regarding the conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Hamas. Days later, it was revealed that her co-star, Jenna Ortega, had also exited the next film. Then, a month after that, director Christopher Landon parted ways on the project, going so far as to say that his “dream job turned into a nightmare.

Prime Video Cancels The Peripheral and A League of Their Own
Image
Amazon Prime Video has decided to cancel the renewal of The Peripheral and A League of Their Own due to ongoing strikes in Hollywood, causing major production delays. The Peripheral, based on the novel by William Gibson, was a popular series with a 76% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. The cancelation comes as a surprise. A League of Their Own, based on the movie and a true story, was renewed for a final season with only four episodes for closure, but it has also been canceled. The cancelation may be confusing for fans.

Amazon Prime Video has decided to revert their decision of renewing both of The Peripheral and A League of Their Own due to the current strikes in Hollywood, which would have brought major delays in the production of both series.

The Peripheral & A League of Their Own Cancelled at Prime video, Reversing Season 2 Renewals
Périphériques, Les Mondes de Flynne (2022)
Despite doing well in its first season, Prime Video has sadly reversed its renewal of The Peripheral.

The change of heart likely stemmed from the dual strikes occurring across the industry.

The series starred Chloë Grace Moretz as Flynne Fischer, a woman who discovered a secret connection to an alternate reality as well as a dark future of her own.

What is one of the first of likely many strike-related cancellations, The Peripheral seemed to fare well on the streamer.

Each week, Twitter would be abuzz with theories and praise for the show, especially for the performances from Moretz and one of the lead antagonists, played by T'Nia Miller.

With the WGA on strike for over 100 days and SAG-AFTRA on strike for over a month, we expect there to be many similar cases of reversals when it comes to renewed series that hadn't already begun production.

The Peripheral Season 2 Cancelled 6 Months After Initially Being Renewed By Prime Video
Image
Prime Video has cancelled The Peripheral season 2 despite positive reviews. The cancellation comes just six months after the show was renewed for another season, and sources state it's tied to the ongoing Writer's Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The show's cancellation marks a devastating trend for producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy after Westworld suffered a similar fate.

Despite garnering strong reviews in its debut outing, Prime Video has cancelled The Peripheral season 2. Loosely based on William Gibson's novel of the same name, the sci-fi show centered on a young woman presented with a seemingly new form of virtual reality, only to learn of its dangerous ties to reality and putting her and her family in danger. ‘The Peripheral’ Canceled at Prime Video Despite Season 2 Renewal
Périphériques, Les Mondes de Flynne (2022)
Prime Video has canceled “The Peripheral,” despite the Chloë Grace Moretz-led sci-fi series receiving a renewal for a second season in February.

An individual with knowledge of the matter tells TheWrap that the cancelation stems from delays caused by the ongoing Writers’ Guild of America strike, which began on May 2, and SAG-AFTRA strike, which began on July 14. The individual noted that the series was originally intended to go into production this year for a release in 2024.

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by William Gibson, the series hailed from “Westworld” creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s Kilter Films banner, who are under an overall deal at Amazon Studios. “The Peripheral” follows Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. She is smart, ambitious and doomed. She has no future; until...

‘The Peripheral’ Canceled at Amazon Despite Season 2 Renewal
Image
“The Peripheral” has been canceled at Amazon’s Prime Video, Variety has learned.

The news comes despite the fact that Amazon renewed the show for a second season back in February. The series, based on the William Gibson novel of the same name, debuted on Amazon on Oct. 21, 2022.

It starred Chloë Grace Moretz and hailed from executive producers Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan under their rich overall deal with Amazon. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the decision to not move forward with the second season was heavily influenced by the ongoing writers and actors strikes. In essence, even if the show was to go back into production soon, Season 2 would not be available until close to if not into 2025.

Per the official logline, the series “centers on Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America.

‘The Peripheral’ Canceled; Prime Video Not Proceeding With Season 2 Amid Lengthy Strikes
Image
Exclusive: Prime Video will not be going forward with the previously ordered second season of its sci-fi drama series The Peripheral, starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Deadline has learned.

I hear The Peripheral is not the only Amazon scripted series whose renewal has been rescinded and there is at least one other series that won’t go to a second season.

According to sources, the cancellation stems from the length of the work stoppage due to the ongoing WGA strike, now in its 109th day, and the SAG-AFTRA strike, in Day 36, which have delayed production, creating large gaps between seasons and making shows miss their target release dates.

While this is the first known case of a renewal reversal amid the current strike, as Deadline reported earlier this week, there may be more series whose renewals could be rescinded or pending pickups not happen if the work stoppage stretches past Labor Day,...

Who Is Sonya Falsworth? Olivia Colman's Secret Invasion Character Explained
Image
The official trailer for Secret Invasion has detailed more about Olivia Colman's character, Sonya Falsworth, begging the question of what broader MCU connections her character has. It is clear from hiring an actor of Colman's quality that Falsworth is going to be a vital part of the upcoming Disney+ series. Colman's casting and the hints seen in Secret Invasion's official trailer make her MCU inclusion somewhat of a mystery, though some details can be gleaned from both Marvel Comics and old MCU films.

Secret Invasion will tell a story similar to that of the same name from the comics, with Nick Fury and Talos teaming up to stop a rogue band of Skrulls from covertly infiltrating Earth. This makes Falsworth's inclusion make all the more sense, given that she is an MI6 agent likely looking to counter the Skrull invasion. That being said, here is every detail that...

AMC Cancels Brett Goldstein’s ‘Soulmates’ Despite Season 2 Renewal
Sarah Snook and Kingsley Ben-Adir in Soulmates (2020)
AMC is no longer moving forward with a second season of “Soulmates,” TheWrap has learned.

The sci-fi anthology series, which was created by Will Bridges (“Black Mirror”) and Brett Goldstein (“Ted Lasso”) and based on their short film “For Life,” was previously renewed for a second season in August 2020.

“We were immediately drawn to the unique premise of Soulmates as it explores love and relationships from several touchpoints in a way that naturally feeds the zeitgeist, prompting conversations around human connection, relationships and happiness,” Dan McDermott, president of original programming for AMC Networks’ Entertainment Group and co-president of AMC Studios, said at the time of the renewal. “These are stories and themes that resonate and feel almost timely given today’s climate in which so many of us feel disconnected or are coping with shifting relationship dynamics. We’re thrilled to continue our relationship with Will and Brett who never...

Amazon’s ‘The Peripheral’ Renewed for Season 2
Image
Amazon is returning to The Peripheral.

The e-commerce giant and streamer has renewed the futuristic drama from Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonah Nolan for a second season.

The series from creator Scott B. Smith is based on William Gibson’s 2014 book of the same name and premiered its eight-episode freshman run in October with a pair of episodes before wrapping its season Dec. 2.

The Peripheral is the first series that Joy and Nolan developed via the nine-figure overall deal the married duo signed in April 2019 with Amazon. The drama hails from Warner Bros. TV, where Joy and Nolan had been based prior to their move to the streamer.

The Peripheral Still Hasn't Revealed 3 Major Figures
Image
Warning: spoilers ahead for The Peripheral season 1 finale.

Despite the presence of major names such as Cherise Nuland, Inspector Lowbeer and Lev Zubov, The Peripheral is still yet to introduce some of its most powerful players. Based on the book by William Gibson, The Peripheral's metaphorical battlefield is far from well-defined. Reluctantly leading the protagonists is Flynne Fisher, and her aims broadly align with those of political revolutionary Aelita West, who wishes to deconstruct the future timeline's three major forces. These are the Research Institute corporation, led by Dr. Cherise Nuland, the Klept mafia, which includes Lev Zubov and his family, and the Met, within which Ainsley Lowbeer serves as an inspector.

Already, therefore, The Peripheral season 1 is packed with power players, all of whom harbor their own alliances, grudges and advantages. Regardless, The Peripheral has still only scratched the surface of its various competing factions. At least three major figures remain unseen,...

The Peripheral: 10 Best Characters, Ranked By Likability
Image
Amazon’s The Peripheral features a plot that mixes time travel with parallel universes. In the show, a girl named Flynne Fisher (Chloë Grace Moretz) is targeted by futuristic organizations after it is revealed that the character she used in a game actually exists in an alternate universe.

Apart from Flynne, the show also has plenty of side characters who have shown their heroic side and immense knowledge regarding alternate universes, advanced technology, and traveling through time. In addition, the show also has a handful of charming but nefarious villains who want to exploit Flynne and her timeline for their own personal gain. Because the show features both commendable heroes and charismatic villains, there are some characters who stand out the most due to their likability.

Corbell Pickett

One of the key villains in the show is Corbell Pickett (Louis Herthum). It has been hinted that the town of Clanton is run by Corbell,...

How The Peripheral's Post-Credits Scene Sets Up Season 2
Image
Warning: spoilers ahead for The Peripheral series finale.

Following a breathless finale, The Peripheral season 1 drops a post-credits scene that completely redefines the narrative's future. The Peripheral's season 1 finale breaks down into a tug-of-war between Flynne Fisher from 2032 and Dr. Cherise Nuland from futuristic London. Cherise is looking to eliminate the Research Institute's secret data by destroying Flynne's timeline. Flynne, understandably, is less keen on that idea, and hatches a plan to save her world without sacrificing the precious R.I. data that could prevent the apocalypse. Aligning with the well-spoken Met officer Ainsley Lowbeer, Flynne achieves her goal by creating a new stub before sacrificing herself in the original stub, protecting her world, but surviving.

The main story of Amazon Prime Video's The Peripheral season 1 finale concludes with Flynne and Inspector Lowbeer reuniting in the future, but their team-up soon bleeds into a post-credits sequence focused on JJ Feild's Lev Zubov,...
