    He was appointed Chairman of the Tyneside shipbuilding and armaments giant Armstrong Whitworth in 1915. Following studies at Oxford in classics, history and theology, he became tutor to the family of Sir Andrew Noble, his predecessor as Armstrong Whitworth's Chairman. His progress through the company had been via the positions of personal secretary to Sir Andrew, to Company Secretary, Sales Director and Vice-Chairman.
