Swartz joins Pioneer immediately from Banijay-backed American Playboy producer Stephen David Entertainment. He will take on a CEO role that has been vacant for more than a year at Pioneer, the producer behind Gold: A Journey with Idris Elba, How the Universe Works and The Unsinkable Titanic. He will lead the company’s effort to expand a slate of factual content spanning feature docs, limited series and docuseries.

Swartz is a former Wbd SVP of docs and specials, during which time he oversaw more than 100 hours of Shark Week programming and launched several limited docuseries including Serengeti narrated by Lupita Nyong’o and Emmy-nominated feature January 6th. "Gladiator" co-writer David Franzoni is set to pen the multi-layered drama series "Colosseum" for Stephen David Entertainment ("Sons of Liberty") with the project currently being shopped to networks.

Set within the world of the Roman Empire's gladiatorial games, this is the first major drama project announced since Sde brought in former History Gm Doug Hoogstra as chief creative officer with the goal to make a push into scripted programming.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. The Writers Guild of America announced some of its nominees for its 2015 awards on Thursday, including television, new media, and radio, and among the TV nominees are series both new and old, and all beloved.

In the comedy series category, freshman Netflix show "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" scored a nomination for best series, as well as an overall best new series nod. "The Last Man on Earth" also landed in that latter category, and was singled out for its pilot episode writing, too.

On the drama side of the equation, lauded "Breaking Bad" spinoff "Better Call Saul" also got best series and best new series nominations, in addition to a an episode writing nod. Former History Channel general manager Dirk Hoogstra has been named Chief Creative Officer at Stephen David Entertainment, the company announced Thursday. In his new role, Hoogstra will be responsible for development, packaging, sales and shepherding new and current projects in the rapidly growing premium content space. "The stories of the American West are epic and profound with some of the biggest, most renowned and mythologized characters," said Redford and Michalchyshyn. Discovery Channel has “Gold Fever.” TheWrap has learned that Discovery is in business with Stephen David, who executive produced last year’s Emmy-winning four-part documentary series, “The Men Who Built America,” for its own historical docu-miniseries titled “Gold Fever.” The four part docu-miniseries will air Friday, Oct. 11 and Oct. 18 at 9/8c on Discovery Channel.
