Babelsberg back lot opening May 2016
Born in Prague in 1954, Jan Fantl comes from a family of active film industry professionals. His Grandfather was the youngest producer for 20th Century Fox in Europe, and his father, Thomas Fantl, was a well-known TV and Film director. Jan literally grew up on his father's sets, and had done many internships by the time he finished high school. As a young man, Jan considered pursuing legal studies, but his passion for the film-industry was stronger. So, instead, he launched his career at Bavaria Studios in Munich, and after two years as a production assistant, he moved on to First AD, working on projects such as the German TV-Series "Tatort" and the feature film "Wallenstein." In 1984, Jan and his father produced the awarded documentary feature "The Children of Theresienstadt- Gateway to Hell," and for the next three years he worked as the writer/ director for the German series "Sesame Street." Later, Jan went on to produce "Multimedia Film- und Fernsehproduktion", e.g. providing for Sat 1 Infotainment. In 1985 he organized the action sequences in "Schimanski - Zahn um Zahn" as the second unit director, one of the first successful action movies in german theatrical production In 1993, Jan line produced the German-Icelandic co-production "Tears of Stone" which garnered an Academy Award nomination in 1994 for Best Foreign Film. His success continued in 1996 when Jan produced the very successful MOW "Der Clown" for German Broadcaster RTL, and in 1997, with "Miss Diamond" --still one of the best rated MOW's for German broadcaster Pro 7. This production marked the first feature of Fantl's own company "Q&Q", which today is "Quality International". Through Quality International (QI), Jan Fantl continues to expand his expertise and vision. QI's recent collaboration with ApolloMedia Filmfunds focuses on international co-productions, specializing in feature films.
