    Journalist, author and screenwriter, a former Scots Guards officer, army heavyweight boxing champion and rugby player. Trained at Sandhurst, he ran a school training commandos during World War II. Fairlie served as the model for the character of 'Bulldog Drummond', created by his friend 'Sapper' McNeile. After the latter's death, Fairlie wrote another seven Drummond novels.
