Attended and graduated from Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi.

Bob Dylan dedicated his song "Only a Pawn in Their Game" to the memory of his murdered brother Medgar Evers. The song appeared on his album "The Times They Are A-Changin'" (1964).

In 1954, he was made State Voter Registration Chairman for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Following his brother's assassination on June 12, 1963, he took over Medgar Evers' position as field secretary of the NAACP in Mississippi.

In 1969, he became the Mayor of Fayette, Mississippi and the first African-American mayor in the state in the post-Reconstruction era. He remained in the position until 1981, when he lost re-election bid. In 1985, he won the mayorship again, but lost the position again in 1989.

Began a lengthy term as station manager of the Jackson, Mississippi radio station WMPR 90.1 FM in 1987.

Supported Ronald Reagan during the 1980 presidential election.

Supported Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election.

Inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame (2017).

Father of Sheila Evers Blackmond, Yvonne Evers, Wanda Evers, and Rachel Evers.

Son of Jessie Wright, and James Evers.

Has two sisters, Mary Ruth Evers, and Liz Evers.
