Exclusive: Black-ish creator Kenya Barris is returning to broadcast television with a multi-camera comedy at CBS starring Mike Epps, which is executive produced by Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment.
Created and written by Barris, the comedy comes from BET Studios, where Barris is a principal, and is co-produced by CBS supplier CBS Studios. This marks a rare collaboration between the two studios which are now part of Paramount Chair of TV Media George Cheeks’ portfolio.
In the untitled half-hour, after wildfires sweep through Altadena, two estranged Black brothers — one played by Epps — reunite to sell their late grandmother’s house to private developers. But when they learn her caretaker now owns part of the home and refuses to sell, they’re forced to live together and confront their differences — and what community, legacy, and family really mean.

What made “Buy Now” a standout episode?
Angel Gamboa Bryant Regina Hicks, who is the showrunner and one of the head writers, was also the director of this episode. What I love about the way she did it is she artfully crafted the scenes in a way that I was able to cut and create a lot of comedy with smash cuts, which not a lot of directors, believe it or not, want to do, and then we can’t, in the edit bay, make the comedy land the right way. There’s a scene where Bennie [Mike Epps] goes to the bank and he’s trying to give the loan back and when he’s leaving, he stands behind a window and there’s vertical blinds in front of him and he yells, “I should rob the bank,” and then we smash cut into him behind bars in jail saying,...

Michael Jai White has been in a lot of film and TV projects over the last 35 years or so. But probably most beloved amongst his fans is “Black Dynamite,” the 2009 sendup of 1970s blaxploitation movies he conceived, co-wrote and starred in. That it remains a favorite for him too is made obvious by “Trouble Man,” which isn’t a spoof but a relatively straight-faced replay of that vintage genre’s conventions, with White (also directing now) as the supercool hero constantly besting bad guys via martial arts and gunplay, while simultaneously fending off the attentions of various beautiful women.
Bearing no formal relation to the actual 1972 blaxploitation feature of the same title, which is best remembered for its Marvin Gaye score, White’s “Trouble Man” is full of such winking references to vintage African-American pop culture. But referentiality is as far as this semi-tongue-in-cheek endeavor goes; it does a lot...

He portrays the lead character in two comedy trilogies, including Barbershop, but his initial comedy series can now be watched on Peacock ahead of its fourth movie.

Despite displaying a particular set of skills that would make even Liam Neeson quake in his boots and possessing the kind of charisma that the best action heroes are made of, Michael Jai White somehow remains one of the most underrated actors in the genre. Comedian Desi Banks is ready to step in front of the camera. The Atlanta-based standup is developing a half-hour sitcom project with BET Studios, loosely based on his own comedy routines. Per the logline, the multi-camera comedy will revolve around “a lovable yet stubborn comedian on the rise as he attempts to balance fatherhood, relationships, and the pursuit of his ever-present dream.”
Banks and Malcolm “Champ” Heaggans are writing the comedy, and will also serve as executive producers. The producers are touting the Atlanta synergy of the untitled comedy, given that Banks and Heaggans both hail from the city, while the show’s production companies include Atlanta-based Quality Films, as well as 3 Arts Entertainment’s new Atlanta office run by Jermaine Johnson.
Johnson is also an EP on behalf of 3 Arts, while Kevin “Coach K” Lee, Pierre “P” Thomas and Christopher Hicks are EPs for Quality Films. Terrence Battle is an additional exec producer.

Most every actor will have their ups and downs throughout their career, and Dakota Johnson knows this first-hand. Though her new film, Materialists, has been welcomed by critics, her last feature film, Madame Web, was an unmitigated disaster.
Johnson took a moment to address Madame Web during an appearance on the Hot Ones interview series from First We Feast. On the show, Johnson struggled with the spiciness of the wings, and leading to jokes made about how she should be able to handle it as a "superhero." For her part, Johnson made it clear that she "failed" with her attempt at becoming a superhero, much in the same way she's failing to handle spicy wings.
As Johnson said, "I am also not a superhero. Tried. Failed. Just like this show. Ugh!"

As the star of Madame Web, Dakota Johnson endured some heavy criticism leveled against the doomed Sony movie upon release last year. Her role in the movie even resulted in Johnson being given a "Razzie," a parody award bestowed upon the "worst" movies and performances each year.
Recently, Johnson appeared as a guest for the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast. The subject of Madame Web's rough reviews came up, and Johnson shared how, after she was declared a Razzie winner, she was contacted by Sandra Bullock for support. For her part, Bullock was already part of the "Razzie Club" after getting one for Worst Actress in 2010 for her role in the panned romantic comedy All About Steve. It seemingly softened the blow of getting a Razzie for Johnson, who was stoked to hear from such an "iconic" movie star during that rough patch.

Did you hear the one about the armed robbery that occurred at an Atlanta house party after Muhammad Ali’s landmark 1970 comeback fight? If not, it’s Ok; “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist” creator and showrunner Shaye Ogbonna had very little information himself.

Dakota Johnson starred in Madame Web, which was a box office flop amid the discussion of superhero movie fatigue.
In a new interview, the Materialists star says the film’s failure was due to some “people who don’t have a creative bone in their body.”

Thanks to Sony Pictures' largely terrible track record with its Marvel movies, most fans didn't have high expectations for Madame Web. So, when the movie arrived with 12% on Rotten Tomatoes and made only $100.3 million at the worldwide box office, it wasn't overly surprising.
Despite boasting a decent cast and a director with superhero experience in Sj Clarkson, very little about Madame Web worked. Eventually, it became a subject of ridicule and is now destined to be remembered as one of the worst superhero movies ever made.
Dakota Johnson led the movie as Cassandra Webb, and faced the wrath of critics and fans alike for what proved to be a...peculiar...performance. Throw in a pretty unhinged press tour, and the actor is lucky her career wasn't completely derailed.

The finale of “Good American Family,” the Hulu limited series based on the adoption of Natalia Grace, reached 6.3 million views in its first six days of streaming.
That makes the episode Hulu’s third-most-watched finale of all time, as well as the biggest finale of 2025 thus far across both Hulu and Disney+, according to Disney. These comparisons are based on data gathered across all season finales, not first seasons or final seasons alone, with views being calculated by dividing total time streamed by an episode’s runtime.

It was recently confirmed that the fourth Fridaymovie, dubbed Last Friday, is finally moving forward. While the film will be missing some fan favorite stars from the franchise, Ice Cube has promised that it's still going to be a "fun" film for the fans.
Cube addressed Last Friday during a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter. It was brought up how fans would be missing late franchise stars John Witherspoon (Pops), Tiny Lister (Deebo), and Al Johnson (Ezal), given how much their previous appearances were enjoyed. Cube confirmed that the new film will address these losses, but he wanted to assure fans that the comedy movie will still be a funny film that catches up with other familiar Friday characters. He also hinted how Last Friday will be about revisiting the family in 2025, though he couldn't share any specific plot details.
"It’s something you have to address," Cube explained.

The Friday franchise has just been revived more than 20 years after the last movie was released. New Line President and Cco Richard Brener confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that Ice Cube had reached a deal to write and star in Last Friday, which will directly follow Friday After Next (2002). Ice Cube mentioned last summer that he was pushing for another Friday movie to get made, but that he wasn’t making any ground convincing Warner Bros. that it was worthwhile. There is no word on if Chris Tucker, Mike Epps, or John Witherspoon are attached to star. It is also unknown at this time who will direct the film, and additional casting is ongoing. Last Friday also has no official release date at this time.
The first Friday movie hit theaters in 1995 and was an instant hit. The film earned scores of 77% from critics and 91% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes,...

It's official: Friday 4 is in the works. After several years of Ice Cube trying to get a fourth movie in the Friday franchise off the ground, the sequel has been confirmed to be in development.
The revelation was divulged directly by New Line president and Cco, Richard Brener, in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He shared that a deal was just finalized for Ice Cube to return for a fourth Friday film that he'll also be writing in addition to returning to his on-screen role. It was also revealed that the sequel will be titled Last Friday, which might be the obvious way to go, though it's also perfect, coinciding with the theme set by the previous movies' titles.

The first two episodes of Hulu's ripped-from-the-headlines limited series Good American Family debuted on the streamer March 19 — and critics are divided.
The "mad and messy saga" is based on the story of Natalia Grace (played by newcomer Imogen Faith Reid), a Ukrainian-born orphan with a rare form of dwarfism who is adopted by a Midwestern family — only to be abandoned a year later when they start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. Golden Globe nominee Ellen Pompeo (Grey's Anatomy) executive produces and stars as Kristine Barnett, Natalia's adoptive mother, and Emmy winner Mark Duplass (The Morning Show) plays Michael Barnett, Kristine's optimistic husband. The project also features Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue, and Dulé Hill.

While the ID Channel docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace aired its final episode on Max back in January, Hulu's latest miniseries Good American Familymeans the infamous true story it's based on is far from over. The streaming service will continue to unravel the contentious case through this new dramatized retelling featuring Grey's Anatomy's Ellen Pompeo and Creep's Mark Duplass, as Kristine and Michael Barnett — Natalia's adoptive parents, who start to believe the orphan is actually much older than she claims to be.
Previously dubbed Orphan, the show will reexamine the captivating and real tale of Natalia Grace, a young Ukrainian girl with a rare form of dwarfism called spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita. The genetic disorder affects an individual's bone growth, resulting in short stature and skeletal abnormalities as well as vision and hearing impairments. For Natalia, the uncommon condition brings her age into question for the Barnett family.

Hollywood’s obsession with established characters and stories didn’t start with endless iterations of Marvel superheroes. From the earliest days of sitcoms, producers tried to cash in on the popularity of hit comedy movies by translating them into weekly television shows. But except for rare occasions — namely, M*A*S*H and What We Do in the Shadows — the imitations rarely live up to the originals.

Back in 2009, a horror film called Orphan told us the story of a married couple who adopts a 9-year-old Russian girl only to discover that she’s actually a criminal adult passing herself off as a child. The film was loosely based on the true story of Barbora Skrlova, a 30-something woman who pretended to be a 13-year-old and did some very twisted things that were very different than what we saw in Orphan. In 2012, a sad case that made it into news reports reminded people of Orphan. It was the story of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born girl with dwarfism who was adopted by American parents who claimed to suspect she was much older than records said she was. The Grace case has been covered on Dr. Phil and the docu-series The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, and now the Hulu streaming service is moving forward with a Natalia Grace-inspired...

Good American Family is a dramatization of the real-life story of Natalia Grace. Grace, who has a rare form of dwarfism known as spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, has had her story told across three seasons of the ID docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, which concluded in January.
Now comes Good American Family, which focuses on an earlier family who adopted Grace, the Barnett family, who are played by Pompeo (also an executive producer) and Mark Duplass. Natalia Grace is played by Imogen Faith Reid.

Move over Meredith Grey, and hello Kristine Barnett. Ellen Pompeo, best known for her leading role in “Grey’s Anatomy,” on which she has starred since 2005, leads Hulu’s new limited series, “Good American Family.”
The trailer below begins by explaining that the series, produced by 20th Television, is “inspired by multiple stories, perspectives, threats, interpretations [and] accusations.” While the official description does not mention it, the show is inspired by Natalia Grace, a young girl with a rare form of dwarfism, who was adopted in 2010 by Kristine and Michael Barnett.
Per Hulu’s official logline, “Good American Family” will be “told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma.”
“As they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is,” the description continues.

If you’re curious about the case of Natalia Grace (Barnett) Mans, well, you’ve probably already watched “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace” on Discovery+ or Max. Still, you might want to check out the upcoming Hulu limited series “Good American Family” starring Ellen Pompeo, Mark Duplass, and Imogen Faith Reid. Or at least watch the trailer below.
Officially, “Good American Family” is “inspired by” (sure) the real-life story of Natalia Grace (Barnett) Mans, a child with dwarfism who was passed around through the foster system and among several different adopted families. Along the way, questions arise about her age and background: Is Natalia Grace an innocent little girl with a rare condition, or is she a threat? (Or is it a little bit of both?)
“Good American Family” is “told from multiple points of view” to “explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma,” per Hulu.
“This compelling drama...
