Virginia Engels
Engels was "Miss Los Angeles" of 1940. She had a tumultuous personal life. She was arrested for drunk driving in 1950. Her first of two marriages ended in divorce and the second ended with the 1954 stabbing death of her husband during a fight. She was tried for his murder, testifying that he often beat her. After a first trial with a hung jury, she was finally acquitted in January 1955. In December 1956, after not seeing her for several days, her landlady found her lying dead on her bedroom floor. She died of meningitis.
