A much-maligned Vin Diesel picture is presently finding new life on the Netflix charts. It has an abysmal reputation with both critics and fans but the fact that the flick is charting seems to suggest that there’s a certain merit to it. I’ll level with you, I have a soft spot for this one. The Last Witch Hunter is not necessarily a great movie but it’s an escapist action-horror spectacle that’s never boring.

The Last Witch Hunter landed on the Netflix platform on June 16 and has been making waves since. Today the flick sits in 8th place overall and comes in as the most-watched horror movie on the streamer. This suggests that I may not be the only one with a soft spot for this oft-maligned effort. Sure, it’s not fine art but you could certainly do worse if you tried.

Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast and action movie superstar Vin Diesel combined his two favorite things for this panned fantasy action movie, and it’s coming to free streaming. Released back in 2015, The Last Witch Hunter takes inspiration from a character that Diesel himself made for his Dungeons & Dragons campaign, and follows Kaulder, who manages to slay the all-powerful Witch Queen some 800 years ago. But, before her death, she curses the warrior with immortality, separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife.

Salt is now streaming on Peacock. Salt received mostly positive reviews upon its debut, with many critics lauding Jolie's performance and its action sequences while reserving criticism for the film's implausible and convoluted plot. The action-thriller holds a 62% critic rating and a 59% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

While Vin Diesel remains synonymous with his Fast and Furious film series, some of his other action-packed efforts continue to fly under the radar. One such effort is his 2015 fantasy film, The Last Witch Hunter, which is set to call Peacock home very soon.

Peacock confirmed that The Last Witch Hunter will be one of many new movies to grace its platform when it debuts on Mar. 1. The film has largely been available for rent or purchase on various digital platforms, including Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

“Sister of the Groom,” which was written and directed by Amy Miller Gross, follows a woman (Silverstone) who tries to put a halt to her brother’s marriage to a much younger French woman over the course of their wedding weekend in the Hamptons. Saban Films will announce plans to release the film at a later date.

Tom Everett Scott, Jake Hoffman and Mathilde Ollivier co-star in the film. Charlie Bewley, Noah Silver, Julie Engelbrecht, Ronald Guttman and the late Mark Blum round out the key cast.

Exclusive: Alicia Silverstone will star in The Pleasure Of Your Presence, the sophomore feature for writer and director Amy Miller Gross (Accommodations). It would seem, given the critical reaction to this film, that the general consensus is that outside the Fast & Furious franchise Vin Diesel can’t headline a movie. Critical reaction is wrong. The Last Witch Hunter is a fantastic example of Vin Diesel’s pre-Fast franchise career – making interesting choices in characters and story. Personally I’ve waited a long time for a Vin Diesel movie as enjoyable as this, which is easily up there with Diesel’s sci-fi horror Pitch Black (I dare say its actually better than that films immediate follow-up too).

Boring and predictable, The Last Witch Hunter is dreadful fantasy which will probably reach the upper echelons of countless ‘worst of’ lists come the end of the year. The Last Witch Hunter opens in the middle ages, where squadrons of Viking/warriors are battling witches who have unleashed the Black Death upon mankind. Valiant hero Kaulder (Vin Diesel with cool scraggly beard), defeats the all-powerful big-cheese Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrecht), annihilating her minions in the process. The Last Witch Hunter is a disappointment, but not terribly so. There are entertaining elements, just not enough to make the film worth recommending. The visual effects and the overall occult storyline had promise. But as in most things, it's the execution of the idea that falls flat. The acting, particularly from lead Vin Diesel, is poor. His characters are all the same to me. I half expected a muscle car to tear through a scene with Dom from the Fast and Furious franchise at the helm.

The story begins in the dark ages with Kaulder (Vin Diesel) leading an expedition to find the Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrecht). Voice over narration tells us that witches, and their magical blood, have existed alongside humans since the beginning. The Witch Queen creates the Black Death plague to wipe out man. Killing Kaulder's beloved wife and daughter. His showdown with the Queen bestows immortality on Kaulder.

Robust and ridiculous, single-minded and empty-headed, The Last Witch Hunter is about as unremarkable as it is structurally adequate. That’s not exactly praise, but this Vin Diesel-powered would-be series starter isn’t looking to win any awards – it was manufactured on some studio assembly line, designed to check just about every box it needs to pass muster with general audiences while world-building effectively enough to launch a new action franchise for the Fast & Furious star.

First of all, why is Vin Diesel the last witch hunter? It doesn’t make any sense. There should be lots of witch hunters. It’s not like the need for them died out. Sure, Diesel’s Kaulder (K: the sexy new C) has been around since the Middle Ages, cuz a witch cursed him with immortality and stuff — bloody typical — but he was a witch hunter before that when he was still mortal. He doesn’t have superpowers or anything. He’s just a guy doing a job, and it’s a job that still needs doing, even in the 21st century.

Imagine a parallel universe where Harry Potter got pumped up on steroids and you'll have an idea of what to expect from The Last Witch Hunter. Vin Diesel is the unfortunate soul charged with banishing wicked witchery from the world, the kind of man you'd want on your side in a bar fight with supernatural heavies - as opposed to a small British schoolboy.

Like most Vin Diesel films, this lacks wit and subtlety, going full-throttle instead on action thrills. But also like most Vin Diesel movies, this is perfectly likeable nonsense - only this time with flaming swords, instead of smouldering tyres.

Adrenaline and what looks like molten lava start coursing as early as scene one, which sees the moment Kaulder (Diesel) is made immortal by the Witch Queen (a latex-encased Julie Engelbrecht) while he drives a fiery sword through her body.

Diesel plays the titular witch hunter Kaulder, an immortal warrior set the task of protecting New York City from a lethal plague.

Kaulder receives unlikely help in the form of a good witch (Rose Leslie of Game of Thrones fame), who can transport people between the real and dream world.

Ciara's cover of the Rolling Stones' classic 'Paint It Black', recorded for the film, plays over the trailer as a bearded Diesel brandishes an impressive, flaming sword at his paranormal enemies.

The supernatural action movie will also star Elijah Wood and Michael Caine, as well as Julie Engelbrecht and Joseph Gilgun.

The Last Witch Hunter will be released in the UK on October 21, 2015.

There’s a part of me that enjoys just about anything Vin Diesel appears in. For the most part, everything ends up entertaining. Yeah, he can sometimes seem a little full of himself and look like he’s taking things a bit too far over the top, but I always get the impression that he knows exactly what he’s doing in those situations and you can’t fault a guy for simply trying to entertain people.

Diesel revealed on his Facebook feed earlier this year that Lionsgate has approached him about making a sequel to the film.

"So the studio apparently is so excited by The Last Witch Hunter - The Axe and Cross franchise... that they are already commencing on the next one," he wrote.
