After graduating from the University of Colorado, she worked at the Cleveland Play House, the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, and Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., making her Broadway debut as Countess Charlotte Malcolm in the original production of
Stephen Sondheim's "A Little Night Music", and won (against stiff competition) the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in 1973 for her performance. She spent 23 years on

She was nominated for a Tony Award again in 1977 for her role in the original production of "The Shadow Box".
