Tiff Trailer: 'Kitchen Stories' Director Bent Hamer's '1001 Grams'
He might not be as recognized as someone like Aki Kaurismaki, but Norwegian filmmaker Bent Hamer has carved out his own similarly distinctive niche, thanks to offbeat comedies like "Kitchen Stories" and "O'Horten." Now he's back with "1001 Grams," which will make its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the first trailer dropped today. Starring Ane Dahl Torp, Laurent Stocker, Stein Winge, Hildegun Riise, Per Christian Ellefsen, Peter Hudson, Dinara Droukarova, Christian Erickson, Didier Flamand and Magne Håvard Brekke, the movie's milieu is set in an absurdly specific area of science. Here's the official synopsis: "When Norwegian scientist Marie attends a seminar in Paris on the actual weight of a kilo, it is her own measurement of disappointment, grief and love that ends up on the scale."  There's no U.S. distributor for this one yet. Watch the trailer below.

Top 200 Most Anticipated Films for 2014: #137. Bent Hamer’s 1001 Grams
1001 Grams

Director: Bent Hamer

Writer: Bent Hamer

Producer: Bulbul Films’ Bent Hamer

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available

Cast: Ane Dahl Torp, Laurent Stocker, Hildegun Riise, Stein Winge, Per Christian Ellefsen, Didier Flamand, Dinara Droukarova

A multi-character holiday film, Home For Christmas was the last we saw from Norwegian director Bent Hamer. His latest, which he has also written, sounds like a return to his sharply observed character studies a la 2007′s O’Horton.

Gist: When Norwegian scientist Marie attends a seminar in Paris on the actual weight of a kilo, it is her own measurement of disappointment, grief and, not least, love, that ends up on the scale.

Release Date: Affixed with a December 24th release in France, Hamer’s 2007 film, O’Horton, played in Un Certain Regard, and we’re thinking his latest has a possibility of playing there again.

Père Noël Origines (2010)
Exclusive: Jalmari Helander Talks Rare Exports
Père Noël Origines (2010)
Rare Exports director Jalmari Helander discusses his Christmas classic Rare Exports and more.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is certainly on its way to becoming a new holiday classic, in a very non-traditional way. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale was recently released on Blu-ray and DVD, which will surely make great a stocking stuffer for anyone in your family who appreciates a Christmas tale served up with a genre flair. I recently had the chance to ask director Jalmari Helander a few questions about Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, the origins of the story, a potential sequel, and more. Here's what he had to say below.

When you made the first Rare Exports short film in 2003, were you setting that up as a proof of concept for a feature film down the road, or did it all branch off the popularity of that short?

Jalmari Helander:...

Blu-Ray Review: Twisted Comedy Carnage of Unique ‘Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale’
Chicago – There’s a beautiful irony in the clever comedy/fantasy/thriller “Rare Exports” in that the majority of the action of the piece is begun by kids acting naughty. Remember who knows when you’re naughty? Why, Santa knows, of course. This wonderfully unique Christmas tale reimagines the legend of Santa Claus as a decrepit, immortal killing machine, one that has been buried for years and only recently unearthed and happened upon by some unlucky hunters.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

“Rare Exports” began life from a pair of short films (both of which are included on yet-another stellar Oscilloscope Blu-ray release…this company is second only to Criterion in terms of worthwhile bonus material and memorable packaging) and, while I admire the final product enough to recommend a viewing, the film’s origins are clear. Even at 82 minutes, it feels a bit long as there’s not quite enough material here to support a feature-length film.

Rare Exports (2010)
Directed by: Jalmari Helander

Written by: Jalmari Helander

Starring: Onni Tommila, Jorma Tommila, Ruano Juvonen, Per Christian Ellefsen

I had never been one to get all crazy over Santa Claus when I was younger. The truth about Santa Claus was outed to me at the early age of 5 when I was awoken middle of the night on Christmas Eve by the sound of Scotch tape and heard my Mom telling my Dad that he wasn't wrapping the presents badly. Or maybe it was when my Mom told me not to look in her bedroom which promptly caused me to look in the bedroom and see all of our presents unwrapped. Regardless, Santa Claus? Meh.

That is why Rare Exports happens to be so awesome, as it takes the myth of Father Christmas and gives him to us in the way he was meant to be seen: a creepy and scary...

Film Review: ‘Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale’ Substitutes Elves With Zombies
Chicago – “What you are about to see now may traumatize you for life.” So reads a warning near the beginning of Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander’s 2005 short, “Rare Exports: The Official Safety Instructions.” The film was a clever follow-up to his 2003 effort, “Rare Exports Inc.”, which seemed to milk its one-joke premise for all it was worth.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

The “exports” of Helander’s films are in the form of bloodthirsty Father Christmases hunted and tamed by reindeer herders near Korvatunturi mountain, which the film bills as the “land of the original Santa Claus.” Who are these gray-haired, unclothed, rawly animalistic creatures? Why are they filled with such fearsome rage when a nearby mortal mildly misbehaves? In the side-splitting yet genuinely eerie “Safety Instructions,” these alleged “Father Christmases” seemed to be little more than elderly zombies.

Rare Exports: A Chrismas Tale – Review
Every year there seems to be an abundance of Christmas or holiday themed movies, but for some reason this year Hollywood has decided not to put any out (outside of The Nutcracker 3D). Thankfully, Finland has decided to bring us one of the best Christmas movies in years. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale was directed by Finish commercial director, Jalmari Helander. It tells the story of a man named Reily (Per Christian Ellefsen) who has begun an expedition in the Korvatunturi Mountains. The Korvatunturi Mountains are known in the Nordic countries as the place where Santa comes from.As the digging takes place, two boys, Pietari (Onni Tommila) and Jusso (Ilmari Järvenpää) witness watch. Pietari wants to believe that Reily and his are digging for Santa. Jusso tries to convince Pietari that Santa doesn’t exist, but Pietari wants to believe. He goes home and decides to research into...

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale Review
A twisted, foreboding take on the mythical Father Christmas, Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is a treat, unwrapped slowly at first, then furiously to reveal a fresh Yuletide fable for adults.

On the frozen border of Russia and Finland, an American drilling team burrows deep into the Korvantunturi Mountains. They are lead by an eager Fedora-wearing gentleman (Per Christian Ellefsen) — a subtle homage to the greedy villain of Raiders of the Lost Ark — who stands at the precipice and declares the peak “the biggest burial mound in the world.”

Nestled in the heart of the mountain, like some Lovecraftian demon, is Santa Claus himself, so the legend goes. But this isn’t the same commercial icon trotted out for adorable mall appearances and household holiday adornments. Nor is he the “jolly old elf” of whimsical children’s fantasies. Instead, Santa is an ancient, terrifying myth, mentioned only in whispers...

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale Movie Review
Père Noël Origines (2010)
Title: Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale Director: Jalmari Helander Starring: Per Christian Ellefsen, Peter Jakobi, Tommi Korpela, Jorma Tommila, Jonathan Hutchings, Onni Tommila, Risto Salmi, Rauno Juvonen, Ilmari Jarvenpaa There’s nothing like a good tease every now and then. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is an 80 minute version of strip club teasing. Although one always want more, the majority of club patrons usually leave satisfied. This is the feeling when one will have after seeing this dark, humorous take on Santa and his elves. Having said that, even though the above gentlemen’s club reference rings true, there is the other aspect or reaction of being teased…Frustration. Since the trailer hasn’t [...]...

"Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale" Review | Sinners In The Hands of An Angry Saint
As a child, or hell even as an adult, have you ever desperately wanted a certain videogame, let's call it Bonestorm? You've begged, pleaded, whined, maybe even shoplifted a copy and got caught. And finally, on Christmas Day, your mother hands you a video-game sized box, and you feverishly tear off the wrapping to discover Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenge. It's still a video game, but it's not the one you wanted.

That's kind of the experience with Jalmari Helander's Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. It's a movie about a menacing Santa, but it's not the Santa you wanted. The trailer sells you a bag of treats -- what looks like some kind of Predator Santa stalking the naughty reindeer trappers of Finland. Instead, it's simply a dark fairy tale, with most of the major violence happening off screen. Like a father assembling his daughter's pink bicycle in the wee hours of the night,...

Remake On The Cards Already For Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale
Finnish flick 'Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale' arrives in theatres both here in the UK and stateside this Friday and it's certainly been ramped up in the marketing stakes this seasonal period with screenings, trailers and even a caged Santa appearing in carnaby Street in London last week. So with an 'expected' semi-success already on the cards for Jalmari Helander's new dark fantasy flick studio fat cats across the pond are already eyeing up a potential remake! The director himself confirmed 'There's lot of conversation about the remake right now.' says Helander. 'We're seeing what's happening. It would be interesting to see an American, more mainstream version [of Rare Exports]'. - Not entirely sure that's true, and not entrely certain it's necessary whatsoever. Per Christian Ellefsen, Peeter Jakobi, Tommi Korpela, Jorma Tommila, Jonathan Hutchings and Onni Tommila all star....

Santa is Not a Happy Fella in Rare Exports Clip
Why is Santa a bit peeved in Jalmari Helander’s “Rare Exports”? Um, hanging him from the ceiling will just about tick anyone off, apparently. Check out a clip from the imported horror flick “Rare Exports”. You can read our review of the movie here. On the eve of Christmas in northern Finland, an archeological dig unearths Santa Claus. This particular Santa, however, isn’t the one you want coming to town. When most of the town’s children go missing, Pietari and his father, a local hunter named Rauno, come into possession of the mythological being. Rauno’s clan of hunters attempt to cash in on the opportunity by selling Santa back to the misguided leader of the multinational corporation sponsoring the dig. What ensues is nothing short of a wildly humorous nightmare — a fantastically bizzare polemic on modern day morality. Starring Per Christian Ellefsen, Peeter Jakobi, Tommi Korpela,...

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale Review
In a nod to Hans Christian Andersen's sinister fairy-tales and 80s children's adventure flicks, Finnish film-maker Jalmari Helander's first feature, Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, is released just in time for the festive season.

It's 24 days to Christmas and the livelihoods of a small mountainside community in Lapland are suffering – the reindeer they slaughter and sell have all been massacred. Seeking an answer, an angry group cross over into an excavation site and find more than they bargained for. It seems Korvatunturi mountain is some kind of giant ice box. Pietari, the son of one of these reindeer farmers, believes the original Santa Claus has been dug up.

Soon strange things start to happen in the community – all the radiators are torn off the walls, a hair dryer is stolen and a farmer has all his potatoes emptied from their sacks. Pietari's father finds a peculiar naked...

Elling
TORONTO -- "Elling", a smash hit in its native Norway, concerns two mentally challenged men forced to sink or swim in society. It's a comic crowd-pleaser, meaning that it has no real interest in the problems of mental illness or alienation. Rather, its makers -- writer Axel Hellstenius, working from a well-known Norwegian novel, and director Petter Naess, who also directed a stage version of "Elling" -- zero in on gags and situations reminiscent of "The Odd Couple".

The film has a certain gentle whimsy in the bickering and affection between the two misfits. And the abilities of its two leads -- Per Christian Ellefsen as the fussy mommy's boy Elling and Sven Nordin as the hulking, libidinous Kjell-Bjarne -- give the film's lighthearted if illogical story a comic charge.

The film, selling well in other territories, could possibly become a minor art house hit in North America.

Thrown out of a state institution, the two roommates, who have had few experiences with the outside world, get tossed into state-sponsored housing in Oslo. Initially, the simple act of going around the corner for groceries is a challenge. But as their courage grows, the two find oddball ways to cope with society.

When Kjell-Bjarne strikes up a friendship with a single, pregnant neighbor, Elling flies into a jealous rage. Striking out on his own independent course, Elling, who is actually well-read, goes to a poetry reading. There his disgust with the works presented jibes with the sentiments of an old man who turns out to be a well-known poet.

Soon the two men have an extended family of the pregnant neighbor, the lonely, aging poet and his rusted 1958 Buick, which Kjell-Bjarne grows determined to restore.

Naess directs with the lightest of touches, which is fortunate given the flimsiness of the material. One feels his affection for the characters and their neuroses. While it would be uncharitable to point out that the two men -- remarkably and without explanation -- actually grow smarter as the story progresses, Naess lets these changes creep in so gradually that many might not even notice.

Technical credits are fine, especially Svien Krovel's cinematography, which bathes the movie in a midnight-sun glow that suits this contemporary fable.
