The Life of Chuck Review
Mike Flanagan
Adapted by horror maestro Mike Flanagan from a lesser-known 2020 Stephen King novella, The Life of Chuck is an ambitious and unusual meditation on mortality, memory, and the fragility of life. Told in reverse, the film opens at the end of the world and gradually winds its way back to childhood innocence, a structure that is bold on paper but often falters in execution.

The story begins in a small American town where the apocalypse is unfolding. Teacher Marty Anderson, played with gravitas by Chiwetel Ejiofor and his ex-wife Felicia (Karen Gillan) attempt to navigate collapsing coastlines, vanishing internet access and a creeping sense of inevitability. Against this backdrop of despair,...

Mark Hamill says his new film The Life of Chuck reminds him of It's A Wonderful Life. The 73-year-old actor - most famous for playing Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise - portrays Albie Krantz, the paternal grandfather of Tom Hiddleston's titular protagonist Charles "Chuck" Krantz, an accountant who grows up loving dance.Hamill says the fantasy drama - which tells the story of Chuck's life in reverse concentrating on the most important moments - has a lot in common with the acclaimed 1946 Christmas film which stars James Stewart as George Bailey, a kind-hearted man who contemplates his life one Christmas Eve and is shown what...

The Life Of Chuck
Image
Like Rob Reiner and Frank Darabont, Mike Flanagan has made Stephen King adaptations a speciality. But while Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep felt no less ripe for cinematic treatment than, say, Misery or Rita Hayworth And Shawshank Redemption, King’s 2020 novella The Life Of Chuck seems a peculiar choice. Hardly a genre banger, it is the story of an average man’s life told in reverse. And rather than plucking at one strand or refitting the material entirely, Flanagan has boldly gone for a faithful take. Like the novella, he’s even divided his film into three chapters, thereby risking the dangers of the anthology movie.

It opens strongly with a curious apocalypse tale. But there are no storm clouds or explosions in this Armageddon. Just sunny skies and quiet streets, with people reflecting on their existential predicament. Disasters are reported (from Pornhub going down to a volcano in Germany) though not witnessed,...

The Life Of Chuck review | Dancing through life

Mike Flanagan’s latest film is a step away from horror, but the emotional impact remains strong. Here’s our The Life Of Chuck review.

Even if you’ve watched the trailer for Mike Flanagan’s The Life Of Chuck, you’d be forgiven if you didn’t have a clue what it’s about. In fact, I’ve seen the film and still find it difficult to summarise its plot. What I can tell you, though, is that The Life Of Chuck hasn’t left my brain since I watched it.

The mystery is intentional. Based on a novella by Stephen King, the film’s first chapter has Chiwetel Ejiofor...

The viral internet legend known as The Backrooms is officially making its way to the big screen. A24 has confirmed that the horror movie, based on the creepy YouTube series created by Kane Parsons finished and will hit theaters in 2026.

For anyone unfamiliar, The Backrooms started as an online creepypasta and urban legend. The story describes a strange, endless maze of yellowed office rooms with buzzing fluorescent lights, damp carpets, and a sense of being trapped in a dreamlike alternate reality.

The unsettling idea is that once you “noclip” out of reality, like in a glitching video game, you end up lost in this bizarre dimension, stalked by unknown creatures.

Parsons turned this concept into a viral YouTube series in 2022, releasing short films that quickly exploded in popularity. His channel, Kane Pixels, introduced millions of viewers to this eerie world, and now he’s taking it to theaters in his feature directorial debut.

Who would Stephen King want to play him in the story of his life?
Legendary horror writer Stephen King has picked Christopher Lloyd or Kyle MacLachlan to play him in the film of his life. The 77-year-old legendary horror author has considered what a biopic about him could be like, but although he would love to be portrayed by a "good-looking leading man" like Brad Pitt he thinks Back to the Future actor Lloyd or Twin Peaks star MacLachlan would be better suited to play him.In a fan conducted interview with The Guardian newspaper, King said: "I would love to have a good-looking leading man, but I don’t think Brad Pitt would do it. ‘Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy’ Was Streaming-Only in the U.S., but Theatrical Test Screenings Proved It Could Succeed Everywhere
Image
Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs and movies about the moment they realized their project was breaking big.

Four films, four books, and three decades since her creation, and the marvelous Ms. Bridget Jones still endures. Initially created by author Helen Fielding as newspaper column fodder — clever enough to poke fun at a cultural obsession with “women’s issues,” charming enough to truly make us care about her — the utterly indefatigable rom-com queen has done it all. This year, that includes something brand-new: get nominated for an Emmy.

While “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” was released theatrically around the globe, in the United States, the much-anticipated fourth film in the long-running franchise was only available to stream on Peacock. That wasn’t an entirely popular choice, particularly for Bridget fans who wanted...

Angelina Jolie in The Initiative: 4 Spy Roles Listed Best to Worst
Image
Considering how Angelina Jolie is majorly known for playing tough and mysterious characters, especially in spy and action movies, it’s not surprising she’s returning to the same genre with The Initiative. This new spy thriller will reunite her with director Doug Liman, the same person she worked with on the hit 2005 film, Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

According to reports from THR, Liman’s new movie will star Jolie as a rogue master spy named Bright, who works outside the rules to take down dangerous enemies. Additionally, the project is being described as “Training Day set in the world of spies,” which means it’s going to have high tension, intense action, and plenty of twists.

Meanwhile, over the years, Angelina Jolie has played several memorable spy and thriller roles. From charming undercover agents to dangerous assassins, she has shown that she can pull off action scenes while also bringing depth to her characters.

Eleanor the Great: Why Scarlett Johansson’s Directorial Debut Is Massively Controversial
Image
Scarlett Johansson made her directorial debut at Cannes this year with Eleanor the Great, starring June Squibb, which is a light-hearted exploration of grief and friendship that slowly delves into controversial themes. Though the plot seems superficially comedic at first, the movie taps into a massively controversial territory with its Holocaust appropriation story.

The central plot of the movie kicks off when Squibb’s character appropriates her dead best friend/soulmate’s tragic Holocaust survival story and spins it off as her own. The purpose of this experiment was simple: she wanted to be the center of attention in a crowd of strangers and make some new friends through falsely-earned sympathy while at it. (Read the full review on Variety).

Know Scarlett Johansson’s Family Surviving Holocaust Story Before Her Directorial Debut With ‘Eleanor the Great’
Image
Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut, Eleanor the Great, which earned thunderous acclaim at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, isn’t just her first time behind the camera; it’s a deeply personal artistic endeavor forged in the shadows of her own family’s Holocaust history. Sony Pictures Classics will release the film in theaters on September 26. But the story behind the story is what hits hardest.

Johansson’s maternal family is Jewish, with roots in Eastern Europe. The Black Widow star first uncovered her maternal family’s harrowing past in 2017 on PBS’ Finding Your Roots, where historian Henry Louis Gates, Jr. revealed that her great-grandfather Saul escaped Poland in 1910, settling in Manhattan’s Lower East Side as a banana grocer (via Algemeiner).

His brother Moshe, however, stayed in Poland with his wife and ten children, only to be rounded up by Nazis and killed in the Warsaw Ghetto. “It must’ve been hell,...

‘Eleanor the Great’ Trailer: Scarlett Johansson’s Directorial Debut Stars 95-Year-Old June Squibb
Image
June Squibb is back above the title with Sony Pictures Classics’ ‘Eleanor the Great,’ hitting theaters September 26. The 95-year-old Oscar-nominated “Nebraska” star, whose sleeper action comedy “Thelma” charmed audiences last year, leads Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut — written by Tory Kamen — in what Sony Pictures Classics describes as a “comically poignant exploration of how the stories we hear become the stories we tell.”

The logline reads: “In ‘Eleanor the Great,’ June Squibb brings to vivid life the witty and proudly troublesome 94-year-old Eleanor Morgenstein, who after a devastating loss, tells a tale that takes on a dangerous life of its own.’ Also appearing are Erin Kellyman, Jessica Hecht, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Johansson serves as producer alongside Jonathan Lia, Keenan Flynn, Trudie Styler, Celine Rattray, Jessamine Burgum, and Kara Durrett.

The movie is also set to screen at TIFF in September and premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in May.

The Departed Jack Nicholson and Matt Damon in “The Departed” (Warner Bros. Pictures)

Despite being the man behind classics like “Raging Bull,” “Taxi Driver” and “The King of Comedy,” Martin Scorsese didn’t win his first Oscar until 2006’s “The Departed,” a fairly straightforward crime thriller with tremendous commercial appeal. 'I'm Really Sorry': Harry Potter Wasn't an 'Important' Creative Job for Emma Thompson
Image
Emma Thompson is one of the most talented and beloved actresses, with a series of extremely heartfelt performances that stole the hearts of the audience. However, few are even aware that she was a part of Harry Potter.

The film series, which consisted of eight films between 2001 and 2011, was filled with high-caliber English and Irish actors, so keeping track of all of them is difficult. Aside from the young actors who found worldwide fame thanks to their roles, the series featured actors like Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, Dame Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, and so many others. However, when speaking about her career at the Locarno Film Festival, via Deadline, Emma Thompson didn't see her role in the franchise as one of the most creative ones.

Thompson played Professor Sybill Trelawney, the Divination teacher introduced in the third book and film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban...
