One of my favorite movies of the 90s, and easily among the best horror / sci-fi movies ever made, fans have always wanted to return to the world created by Paul W.S. Anderson and Philip Eisner nearly 28 years ago. And we're getting our chance this August, with the release of the first of five issues of a brand-new prequel comic book series set in the world of Event Horizon. Six months ago, we heard that Idw Publishing, a company known for bringing us comic books based on popular established properties like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Trek, Godzilla, and others, were launching a new line of comics called Idw Dark, which would specialize in horror stories. Notorious sci-fi horror film Event Horizon is returning in comic book form, thanks to Idw Publishing, which is set to release a long-anticipated prequel detailing the grotesque fate of the ship’s original crew, as only glimpsed in the original movie. This kid, Charlie, is soon hounded by a government agency known as The Shop, who had conducted drug trials on her parents, Andy and Vicky, when they were young. Nefarious without limits, the Shop kills Vicky and kidnaps Charlie, but Andy is able to use his limited powers (known as The Push) to search for his daughter and flee with her. "Firestarter" fleshes out this perilous journey, honing in on Charlie's inner struggle and how everyone around her wants to control her powers one way or another. It's a novel about cultivating autonomy, which often takes root when one faces the brutality of the world firsthand. Although "Firestarter" isn't as thematically dense as, say, "Carrie" or "The Stand," it examines the making and unmaking of identity, with society forever ready to intrude if someone dares to stray from the norm.

From the director of the 2000s Resident Evil films, Paul W.S. Anderson's underrated 1997 sci-fi horror film Event Horizon will be available to stream for free on Tubi on March 1st. The film, set in 2047, follows a group of astronauts sent to investigate the titular spaceship after it mysteriously reappears after going missing. The film was a box office failure, only managing to gross a total of $42 million globally on its $60 million budget. Critically, Event Horizon was also poorly received, with only 34% on Rotten Tomatoes; however, since its release, the film has garnered a substantial cult following thanks to its far more successful release on DVD.

We all know the term “Hell on Earth,” but what about “Hell in Space”? That might be the most succinct way of describing the 1997 film, Event Horizon (watch it Here), directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and written by Philip Eisner. The film’s title is borrowed from an astrophysics term, and although there are various theories surrounding this term, it can best be summed up by someone such as myself who does not have an astrophysics degree as the idea that once a particle is inside the horizon, moving into the hole is inevitable—which leads us to the colloquial understanding of an “event horizon” as “a point of no return” and that is exactly where the characters of this film will find themselves.

Screen Gems has acquired the spec script Border Patrol, with genre filmmaker James Wan and Michael Clear on board to produce the project through their company Atomic Monster and Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) set to direct the film. According to Deadline, Screen Gems enjoyed their working relationship with Roberts on Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City so much that they “moved fast to land the rights” to this spec script package so they could work with him again.

The initial script for Border Patrol was written by Noah Griffith and Daniel Stewart, whose previous credits include the Netflix series Sweet Tooth, the DC Comics-inspired series Swamp Thing, and the Stephen King-inspired series The Mist. Griffith and Stewart’s script is now being rewritten by Gregg Hurwitz and Philip Eisner, the duo who wrote the Netflix film Sweet Girl. Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down, The Strangers: Prey at Night, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, V/H/S/99) has set up another new project, this one titled Border Patrol.

Deadline reports that Roberts will direct the mysterious film for Screen Gems, with James Wan‘s Atomic Monster on board to produce. Plot details are under wraps at this time.

Deadline notes, “The studio acquired the spec script written by Noah Griffith and Daniel Stewart. It is being rewritten by Gregg Hurwitz and Philip Eisner.”

James Wan & Michael Clear are producing, with Judson Scott executive producing for Wan’s Atomic Monster. Starlight Media’s Peter Luo and Nancy Xu are executive producing.

Exclusive: Screen Gems is looking to reunite with its Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City helmer Johannes Roberts, as sources tell Deadline the studio has set him to direct Atomic Monster’s Border Patrol. James Wan & Michael Clear are producing, with Judson Scott executive producing for Wan’s Atomic Monster. Starlight Media’s Peter Luo and Nancy Xu are executive producing.

The studio acquired the spec script written by Noah Griffith and Daniel Stewart. It is being rewritten by Gregg Hurwitz and Philip Eisner. Plot details are being kept under wraps as the film is still in development.

Roberts has been a director on the rise since breaking out with his shark thriller 47 Meters Down, which overperformed at the box office on a low budget and put Roberts on the map. His work on that helped him land the rebooted Resident Evil pic, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

“Event Horizon” had an inauspicious start. Released in theaters August 15, 1997, it opened to mixed reviews and #4 at the box office. And then, a funny thing happened: In December 1998, when “Event Horizon” was released on the still-new DVD format, it started to find a cult following.

“That really propelled ‘Event Horizon’ to a new audience,” director Paul W.S. Anderson told IndieWire. “It’s a great-looking movie, and when you were watching it on VHS it didn’t really have the quality that it had in the cinema. When the DVD came out the quality jumped, and I think the stark beauty finally kicked in.”

Once the studio realized what they had, they made the most of it. “They started selling a lot of DVDs, and they would change the box without changing the movie, and they’d sell a lot of that version,” he said. “Then they’d change the box again!

Sweet Girl star Isabela Merced is currently causing all manner of chaos in the name of revenge in Netflix's recently released action thriller, with the young actress already thinking about returning for sequel. Merced stars in the movie as Rachel Cooper, the daughter of Jason Momoa's Ray Cooper, and had high praise for the stunt team behind Sweet Girl's various gritty action sequences, hoping to work with them again on a potential Sweet Girl 2.

"[I'm playing] empowered characters only. It was so much fun because they got to do a lot of the action scenes and I've always loved action movies. As someone who has been a huge fan of Event Horizon ever since it was released in 1997, I’m always on board for anything that celebrates this audacious, terrifying, and grotesquely beautiful exercise in cosmic horror. Written by Philip Eisner and directed by (my boy) Paul W.S. Anderson (who was still just Paul Anderson at this stage in his career), there’s no denying that Event Horizon wears its influences proudly on its blood-stained sleeve, but there’s something about how Eisner approached those homages he works into his script that felt unusual and thought-provoking at the time the film was hitting the big screen during the summer of that year. And I’d be so bold as to say that even now, Event Horizon feels like a once-in-a-lifetime cinematic excursion in sci-fi and pure, unfiltered horror that rarely ever comes along out of the studio system.

This is a good week to be a horror fan who collects home media, because we have some killer releases headed our way on Tuesday. Personally, I’ve been waiting ever so patiently for Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition release of Paul W.S. Anderson’s Event Horizon, and my patience is finally going to pay off tomorrow, as not only are we getting a 4K scan of the film, but the Blu is also chock-full of special features I cannot wait to dig into. The potential series is from Paramount Television, with “Godzilla vs. Kong” director Adam Wingard is set to direct and executive produce, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Wingard will executive produce with Jeremy Platt and the film’s producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin. The project expands Amazon’s relationship with Paramount TV, which also produces “Jack Ryan” for the streaming service.

Amazon and Paramount Television are developing a series adaptation of the 1997 sci-fi horror film “Event Horizon,” Variety has learned.

Adam Wingard is set to executive produce and direct the potential series. Wingard recently directed the film “Godzilla vs. Kong,” which is due out in theaters in March 2020. He has previously directed films like the recent “Blair Witch” reboot, “The Guest,” “You’re Next,” and the live-action version of “Death Note.” He also wrote and directed films like “Autoerotic” and “What Fun We Were Having.”

Brian Andrew Mendoza is set to make his directorial debut with Jason Momoa in Sweet Girl. This will be a reunion for the two creatives because Mendoza served as producer and cinematographer on Braven as well executive producer on Frontier, two projects that put Momoa front and center. Joining them as producer is Brad Peyton (San Andreas) and Jeff fierson of Asap Entertainment. This will be the third feature project from a partnership between Asap Entertainment and Netflix.

The company also produced Frontier and the upcoming post-apocalyptic series DayBreak, which is based on a comic series by Brian Ralph.

After starring in the $1 billion-plus grossing “Aquaman,” Jason Momoa is heading to Netflix — the streamer announced Monday that it will distribute “Sweet Girl,” in which Momoa will star as a husband who vows to bring justice to those responsible for his wife’s death.

In the movie, Momoa, also known for his role as the bare-chested Dothraki leader Khal Drogo in “Game of Thrones,” will be tasked with protecting the only family he has left, his daughter, while seeking vengeance.

“Sweet Girl” will reunite Momoa with several collaborators. The movie will be director Brian Andrew Mendoza’s feature debut. Mendoza was the cinematographer and producer on “Braven” and executive produced the Netflix series “Frontier,” both of which star Momoa.

Momoa and Mendoza are producing alongside Brad Peyton and Jeff Fierson of Asap Entertainment, who also produced “Frontier,” with executive producer Martin Kistler.

Slasher Films is the new studio outfit setup by Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash which will deal mainly with all things horror. The new demonic flick will star Anne Heche -below ('Psycho', 'I Know What You Did Last Summer') along with the sexy Willa Holland ('Legion', 'Straw Dogs'), Jennifer Stone ('Mean Girls 2'), James Tupper and Rafi Gavrone. The production kicks off in February 2012. In addition to the previously-announced Nothing to Fear and an adaptation of Steve Niles' Wake the Dead , Slash's production outfit, Slasher Films, will shepherd Theorom and The Other Kingdom . Vincenzo Natali - of Cube - is poised to direct Theorom , which finds him returning to the horrors he explored in Splice when a college professor unleashes a genetic evil after unlocking an ancient relic. Philip Eisner, meanwhile, penned The Other Kingdom and will make his directorial debut. Eisner also wrote Event Horizon . This time, he has scripted a tale about a hospital staff who has to defend itself from people infected with an alien pathogen. All Slasher Films will be co-produced by Scout Films.

Along with an adaptation of Steve Niles' Wake the Dead, former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash has announced three more films that have a great chance of falling under his Slasher Films banner. Dig it!

According to Bloody Disgusting "Slash has partnered with Michael Williams and Rob Eric of Scout Productions (Transsiberian, Session 9, The Fog of War, Mr. Death) and is in negotiations to acquire three new feature film packages under the shingle that will produce edgy, contemporary horror films.

The first film to be produced under the new moniker will be Nothing To Fear, a horror/thriller revolving around two young sisters and their family, who accidentally discover one of the seven gateways of Hell in a small town in rural Kansas. Several directors are currently circling the project, which is scheduled to shoot in Louisiana this summer.

Slasher Films is also negotiating to produce Vincenzo Natali's Theorem.

Musicians spiced up the 2011 Sundance Film Festival last weekend, with films involving Lou Reed, James Taylor and the Grateful Dead. HollywoodNews.com: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that they will explore the physical realities of science fiction movies in the three-evening series “Out of This World: The Science of Space Movies” beginning on Thursday, August 5. “Out of This World” will continue on Friday, August 6, with a presentation of Fritz Lang’s 1929 silent classic “Woman in the Moon” and conclude on Saturday, August 7, with screenings of “Project Apollo” (1968) and “For All Mankind” (1989), documentaries that focus on Nasa’s Apollo program.

All three evenings are being presented by the Academy’s Science and Technology Council. The following is information for each night:
