    Leading actor of the Viennese stage (from 1904), in films from 1912. From 1929, ensemble member of the Theater in der Josefstadt. Noted for roles in classic plays by Shakespeare, Shaw, Gorky, Hauptmann and Schiller. Played key roles on screen, especially during the 1920's under the direction of Murnau, Lang or Wiene. In sound films, acclaimed as Colonel Pickering in Pygmalion (1935), opposite Jenny Jugo and Gustaf Gründgens.
