Although many in Hollywood thought she was related in some way to director Allan Dwan, it turned out that Dorothy wasn't related to him at all, but took his last name because she greatly admired his work.

While filming a picture with Tom Mix in 1927, Dorothy's stunt double, Ethel Hall, was killed when the boat she was in capsized in the river and she struck her head on a rock.

Petite, soulful-eyed brunette leading lady of the silent screen, best remembered for playing 'Dorothy' in an early version of Le Prince qu'on sort (1925). Her second husband was comic actor Larry Semon, who frequently used her in his short films. After Semon's death in 1928, Dorothy continued to get steady work, including as heroine of several westerns. She apparently had a good enough voice to make the transition to talkies, but instead opted to retire and raise a family with her third husband, the son of a Union Oil Company executive.
