Martin Duncan was born in London and trained as a stage manager at LAMDA. He was an actor for 22 years and composed music for over 50 theatre productions.

From 1994 to 1999, Martin was Artistic Director of Nottingham Playhouse where he directed works by Gogol, Brecht, Goldoni, Molière and Beckett. His productions toured to festivals in Romania, Italy, France, Germany, Ireland and Japan.

From 2003 to 2005, Martin was Joint Artistic Director of Chichester Festival Theatre where his productions included: Cole Porter's Out Of This World, How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying and The Government Inspector.

In the UK, he has directed opera productions at Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Glyndebourne, Garsington Opera, Opera Holland Park, Opera North, Scottish Opera, Aldeburgh Festival; and abroad in Munich, Cologne, Berlin, Bonn, Dortmund, Antwerp, Toulouse, Paris, Moscow, Minneapolis, Toronto.

He was an Artistic Adviser for the London 2012 Olympic Culture Festival and is an Artistic Associate at Mountview Theatre School.

      He acted in George Bernard Shaw's play, "Mrs. Warren's Profession", at the Northcott Theatre in Exeter, England with Sarah Stephenson and Ann Windsor in the cast. Rhys McConnochie was the director.
