'Big Trouble in Little China' star Peter Kwong Dead at 73
Image
Peter Kwong, known for his portrayal as Rain in John Carpenter's 1986 classicBig Trouble in Little China, has died. According to Variety, Kwong died in his sleep on Tuesday, May 27, as revealed by one of his reps. T he veteran actor was 73. In the film, Rain is an elemental master and expert martial artist who uses a sword. During an interview with The Los Angeles Times in 1986, the actor described the film as "tongue in cheek." He also said that it can't be seen as being in the same genre as Year of the Dragon.

Starring Kurt Russell as Jack Burton (a cocky truck driver), Kim Cattrall as Gracie Law (Jack's love interest), Dennis Dun as Wang Chi (Jack's friend), James Hong as Lo Pan, Victor Wong, and more, Big Trouble in Little China, according to critics, was filled with energy and packed with humor. The story follows Jack, who...

Big Trouble in Little China: The Greatest Cult Film of All-Time?
Image
I come from the video generation. People today have their pick of whatever they want to see online – legally or not – so one can’t say there’s a lack of available stuff. In fact, I’d wager no movie, no matter how obscure, is totally impossible to find nowadays. But let me take you back to a time before the internet, when things weren’t so easy to find. In the eighties and nineties, we had video stores, where you could rent video tapes for a day, and were limited by the inventory, which is why everyone had at least two or three video stores in their circuit to hit. Each place had different things. Without the internet, renting older movies was a real crapshoot, especially if they were obscure, but sometimes you’d find gold.

Such was the case when, at thirteen years old, I walked into my local video store,...

John Carpenter
A new episode of our What Happened to This Horror Movie? series is now available to watch on the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel – and you can also check it out in the embed above! In this one, we’re taking a look back at the 1987 John Carpenter film Prince of Darkness (watch it Here), the middle installment in what the director calls his “Apocalypse Trilogy”, even though the three films – the other two being The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness – aren’t directly connected to each other. If you haven’t seen Prince of Darkness yet, watch the video to find out all about it.

Scripted by Carpenter under the pseudonym Martin Quatermass, Prince of Darkness has the following synopsis: Poking around in a church cellar, a priest finds an otherworldly vial filled with slime. Frightened, he brings his discovery to a circle of top scholars and scientists,...

Why Kurt Russell Channeled John Wayne For A Beloved Cult Classic
Image
John Carpenter's 1986 action-comedy "Big Trouble in Little China" is a pretty strange movie that has earned a special place in the hearts of fans as a cult classic. In it, truck driver Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) becomes entangled in a battle against ancient evil with his friend and pseudo-sidekick, Wang Chi (Dennis Dun). Instead of being an all-out action hero, however, Jack is actually really kind of Wang Chi's sidekick, cracking wise and getting the girl but never doing much in the way of fighting. He's an all-American hero archetype despite this, and apparently, it's at least partially because Russell was channeling Western movie legend John Wayne.

In his interview book, "John Carpenter: Prince Of Darkness," Carpenter explained that he and Russell decided that he should play the character like the famous Western actor because Wayne had a certain kind of "blowhard" attitude that worked perfectly. By playing Jack Burton...

The 10 Best Kurt Russell Movies
Image
March 17, 1951 was a great day in history, because that’s the day Kurt Vogel Russell entered the world. And while he would go on to become one of the biggest icons of the eighties and nineties, many folks don’t know that Russell started as a child star for The Walt Disney Company, even acting opposite his future life partner Goldie Hawn in The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band (1968) – although they wouldn’t get together until Russell ended up in another movie starring Goldie Hawn, Swing Shift (1984). From the sixties into the seventies, he starred in Disney flicks like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), but as the studio’s movies started to flop and Russell got older, a change of pace was needed. Arguably, Russell’s career took off when he began working with director John Carpenter, with the first movie being 1979’s TV movie Elvis, but what...

20 Fantasy Movies That Feel Like A Dungeons & Dragons Campaign
Image
Dungeons & Dragons is one of the most iconic pieces of fantasy media ever created. It draws on tropes from genre classics and has influenced the tropes of many more. However, D&d campaigns have a very particular feel to them. They're not polished tales created by trained writers.

Instead, Dungeons & Dragons campaigns tend towards a lighter, more chaotic tone. A group of players is given total freedom with their goals, tastes, and ideas. This is unlike many fantasy movies. That said, a similar tone does exist in some fantasy movies that feel just like tabletop gaming sessions.

Updated on January 24, 2025, by Chen Drachman: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is out there, to the great delight of many fans. This gave us an opportunity to revisit this list and add some additional chaotic, adventure-filled, ensemble-driven entries.

James Hong Thought He Bombed His Big Trouble in Little China Audition
Image
Celebrated actor and Everything Everywhere All At Once star James Hong met newfound fame after playing baddie David Lo Pan in Big Trouble in Little China. The fiery 1986 action film, starring Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, and Dennis Dun, became a cult classic over the decades and the role of David Lo Pan, sinister as he was, quickly became one of Hongs most iconic roles.

But in a recent MovieWeb interview promoting the second season of Gremlins: The Wild Batch, in which Hong plays Grandpa in the popular sequel series, Hong admitted he wasnt sure hed even be cast, noting:

Obviously, playing David Lo Pan in Big Trouble in Little China was a high point in my life. I remember auditioning for that. I did my dialogue as Lo Pan, and I said, I can show you a little Kung Fu. And he [director John Carpenter] said, No, no, no, you don't need to.

10 Best Kung Fu Parody Movies
Image
While kung fu movies have cycled in and out of popularity, they have also created an influx of many great parody films of the genre. Kung fu and martial arts films saw a significant rise in favor in the 1980s and 1990s, with hundreds of movies produced then. Audiences appreciated the typically likable and underdog heroes, as well as the intense choreography and kung fu techniques featured in the movies. Many iconic kung fu film stars even practiced the martial art in real life, adding realness to their performances.

However, the stylized and well-known martial arts genre also provided lots of material for spoof films. Kung fu parody movies often focus on mocking any combination of the genre's stunts, filming style, language, and intense tone. These films also became quite popular, subverting a genre with which many had grown familiar. Even notable kung fu stars like Jackie Chan pivoted from...

Kurt Russell's 5 Most Rewatchable Movies, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
There is something universally lovable about Kurt Russell. The actor actually started his career as a way to meet famous baseball players before getting signed on with Walt Disney and becoming a bonafide child star. After a gnarly injury forced him to retire from baseball and pursue acting full-time, he became a prolific performer who manages to make nearly everything he's in better just by his mere presence. From fluffy rom-coms like "Overboard" with future long-term partner Goldie Hawn to intense genre fare like "The Thing" to big blockbuster franchise flicks like "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," Russell is able to fit into the fabric of just about any kind of film. He's incredibly charismatic even when playing antiheroes and downright villains, which makes his movies extremely rewatchable. But which are the most rewatchable?

While some of Russell's movies didn't do well theatrically or critically at the time of release,...

10 Kurt Russell Comedy Movies That Prove He's Hilarious
Image
Kurt Russell is a powerhouse of Hollywood with a great deal of credits to his name, not the least of which being a collection of commendable comedies. A versatile actor, Kurt Russell is best known for his work in action movies, particularly under the watchful eye of John Carpenter, making a name for himself in titles like The Thing and Escape From New York. It's easy to forget that outside of Russell and Carpenter's collaborations, he's also starred in quite a number of comedies, as well.

Compared to Kurt Russell's Westerns or cheesy 80s blockbusters, Russell is usually the best thing about the comedies he's in. In general, the actor's films historically haven't been massive hits at the box office, and his more humorous appearances keep to this unfortunate pattern. Whether or not the movie surrounding him holds up on his own, Russell always manages to bring a cheery performance...

Why Big Trouble In Little China's Marketing Campaign Left Kurt Russell Disappointed
Image
John Carpenter's 1986 action-comedy "Big Trouble in Little China" is an odd duck. The plot involves an ancient wizard named Lo Pan (James Hong) who aims to kidnap, marry, and then sacrifice a green-eyed woman to break a curse he is under. The woman in question is Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), the fiancée of Wang Chi (Dennis Dun), who, fortunately, knows a little bit about evil wizards and ancient Chinese warriors. It will be up to Wang to rescue Miao Yin from Lo Pan. Also kidnapped is the green-eyed Gracie (Kim Cattrall), beloved by the dumb-as-rocks blowhard Jack Burton (Kurt Russell), essentially Wang's sidekick.

The gag of the movie is that Jack doesn't really seem to understand that he's a sidekick, and behaves like the action hero. Indeed, the whole movie seems to be a martial arts movie told from the perspective of the American guest star. Russell was featured...

Kurt Russell Has Two Conditions To Play Big Trouble In Little China's Jack Burton Again
Image
The central joke of John Carpenter's 1986 martial arts comedy "Big Trouble in Little China" is that the himbo hero Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) thinks he's the main character of the story, when really he's the dorky, comedic sidekick to other people. One should acknowledge that Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) is the true hero of "Big Trouble," and it is ultimately his heroism that saves his fiancée Miao Yin (Suzee Pai) from the clutches of the evil warlock Lo Pan (James Hong). Wang Chi is the one with fighting skills, as well as the one with connections to other magic users. Jack Burton is a silly blowhard with the muscles to fight off bad guys and the know-how of a golden retriever.

Needless to say, "Little China" is quirky and charming. It remains the most whimsical of John Carpenter's output. Indeed, it may be the only comedy film Carpenter directed...

Why Kurt Russell Sidelined His Own Character In Big Trouble In Little China
Image
The main gag of John Carpenter's 1986 fantasy flick "Big Trouble in Little China" is that the sidekick seems to think he's the main character. The main character of the story is Wang Chi (Dennis Dun), a restaurant owner who cannot wait to meet his fiancée Miao Yin (Suzee Pai). Miao Yin, however, is kidnapped by the Lords of Death, a San Francisco street gang. Wang follows them to Chinatown hoping to rescue his fiancée, only to discover that she was passed to David Lo Pan (James Hong), an ancient Chinese sorcerer who aims to sacrifice her on a magical alter and break a ghostly curse he suffers from. Wang gathers old friends, each of them possessing knowledge of magic and ancient Chinese sorcery, to trek into the magical underworld in order to defeat Lo Pan and rescue Miao Yin.

Oh yeah, and Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) is there. Jack is a none-too-wise,...

Kurt Russell Improvised A Wtf Moment In Big Trouble In Little China
Image
Kurt Russell and John Carpenter make a great team. The two first worked together on the TV movie "Elvis," and then went on to make "Escape From New York," "Escape From L.A.," "The Thing," and of course, "Big Trouble in Little China." "Big Trouble" isn't a horror movie or even your typical John Carpenter flick. It's a pulpy action-comedy that sees Russell playing buffoonish truck driver Jack Burton, who gets roped into becoming a very clumsy hero to fight a trio of ancient gods and an evil sorcerer. The movie is an absolute blast from beginning to end, and Russell is clearly having a lot of fun playing Burton, a character who thinks he's the hero when he's really more like a glorified sidekick to his friend Wang Chi (Dennis Dun).

Russell and Carpenter worked together well over the years, with Russell seemingly bringing out the best in Carpenter and vice versa.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986) – The Best Scenes

After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, and the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek shifts his focus over to the works of John Carpenter with the latest episode in his The Best Scene video series. The Carpenter classic Lance is looking at with this one is the 1986 action extravaganza Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here) – a movie that’s so good, he couldn’t pick just one “best scene”. He narrowed it down to three options, and you can hear all about them in the video embedded above.

In the video, Lance covers the opening gambling scene with our heroes Jack Burton and Wang, the alley battle scene that...

Kurt Russell Teases Big Trouble in Little China Sequel: 'Never Say Never'
Image
Kurt Russell has left the door open for a potential return as Jack Burton in Big Trouble in Little China 2.

Directed by John Carpenter, Big Trouble in Little China was released in 1986. It stars Russell as Jack Burton, a truck driver who accompanies pal Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) on a mission to rescue the latter's fiancé from Chinatown bandits. The legendary James Hong also starred as the iconic villain Lo Pan. It's a film that's considered by many fans to be among Carpenter's best works, but despite its cult following and enduring popularity, it was never given a sequel. However, it's not too late to finally revisit that world, as Russell suggested in a new interview with ComicBook.com.

Kurt Russell Responds to Possible Return in Big Trouble in Little China Sequel: "We Could Slap John Carpenter Around a Bit"
Image
Kurt Russell is open to reprising his role in a Big Trouble in Little China sequel if the script is better than the first. Director John Carpenter has previously mentioned the potential for Big Trouble in Little China to be revived, possibly as a video game. Creating a successful sequel to Big Trouble in Little China would be challenging due to the unique combination of genres that made the original a cult classic.

When it comes to classic ‘80s adventure movies, Big Trouble in Little China holds a place in many top ten lists. Therefore, it is one movie that constantly comes up in conversations about which movies can benefit from being given a legacy sequel, and one person who would be on board with that if the right script came up is star Kurt Russell.

John Carpenter suggests Big Trouble in Little China would be a fun video game
Image
Legendary director John Carpenter is currently doing the press rounds to promote his new unscripted TV series, John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams (you can read our review at This Link), and during an interview with ComicBook.com he was asked which of his films he thinks would make for the best film-to-video game adaptation. His answer: the 1986 martial arts fantasy adventure Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here)!

Here’s the direct quote from Carpenter: “I think, maybe Big Trouble in Little China, it seems to me would be a fun video game and kick ass. There’s also, by the way, a Thing card game. I mean, there’s a lot of these games. There’s actually a They Live game. I don’t know that there would ever be a Prince of Darkness game. I don’t see that.“

Now that Carpenter mentions it, it’s kind of...

Big Trouble In Little China Lo-Pan Actor Talks Dwayne Johnson Reboot
Image
Dwayne Johnson has been trying at a Big Trouble in Little China reboot, on which Lo-Pan actor James Hong is sharing his thoughts. The Rock has not been shy about his desire to bring life back into the Kurt Russell-led genre-defying film, which came out in 1986. John Carpenter's original Big Trouble in Little China followed Russell's character Jack Burton and his wild adventures in and around San Francisco's Chinatown. The action revolves around Burton and his friend Wang Chi (Dennis Dun), and their efforts to find and rescue Chi's green-eyed fiancée Miao Yin (Suzee Pai) after she gets kidnaped. The kidnaper, Lo-Pan, did so in order to marry her, as his curse specifies that he needs to marry a woman with green eyes in order to retain his immortality.

Although he had his hands full with Black Adam for some time, Johnson has also been pining for this reboot for some years now,...

John Carpenter’s Inferno: Celebrating 35 Years of Prince Of Darkness
Image
John Carpenter is deservedly known as a master of horror, but he often did not get his just due quick enough. So many of his films did not find a loving audience until after their theatrical releases, including The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, In the Mouth of Madness, and 1987’s Prince of Darkness, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.

The film is the second chapter of Carpenter’s “Apocalypse Trilogy”—which also includes The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness. Although it lacked the star power and larger scope of the other two films, Prince of Darkness still comes off as incredibly rich and complex. It’s a kind of movie you don’t see much of anymore, if at all.

According to Carpenter, Prince of Darkness came at a time when he was tired with the process of making big-budget studio movies. “And I longed...

Big Trouble In Little China: 5 Ways It's Aged Well (& 5 It Hasn't)
Big Trouble in Little China is a 1986 cult classic. Starring Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, James Hong and Dennis Dun, and directed by legendary horror filmmaker John Carpenter, it's one of our favorite cult classics. Class of 1987: 30 Years of Liquid Evil – Celebrating John Carpenter’s Prince Of Darkness
Poor John Carpenter. Like nearly all of the truly great horror filmmakers, his movies are destined to be misunderstood in their time, only finding the proper appreciation several years after the fact when the rest of the world is finally able to catch up to what he’s doing. It’s not always the case, of course, as he has had a handful of commercial hits; for many years, his breakthrough movie Halloween was the most successful independent film ever made. It was the rare instance in which audiences were tuned in to what Carpenter was doing at the time he was doing it. Most of his other great films—and he has more great films than almost any other director working in the genre—took years to connect with the public. Don’t blame Carpenter for that. He’s a man ahead of his time.

It has been 30 years...

Kim Cattrall, Kurt Russell, and James Hong in Les Aventures de Jack Burton dans les griffes du Mandarin (1986)
First Look at Making of Big Trouble in Little China Book
Kim Cattrall, Kurt Russell, and James Hong in Les Aventures de Jack Burton dans les griffes du Mandarin (1986)
While we continue to ponder whether or not the Big Trouble in Little China remake starring Dwayne Johnson is a good thing, we now have something new and exciting to pour over from the original movie itself. As we approach the 30th Anniversary of Big Trouble in Little China, which was released July 2, 1986, we have a first look at the big coffee table book that explores the making of the movie. Along with the cover art, we also have two behind-the-scenes photos.

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we get a sneak peek at this awesome tome from authors Tara Bennett and Paul Terry. At the time of Big Trouble's debut in theaters, the Fourth of July release date window wasn't what it has become today. And the movie didn't fare too well amongst other big summer blockbusters. Its box office reception was tepid, to say the least, pulling in just $11 million.

34 Things We Learned from John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness Commentary
John Carpenter celebrated his 68th birthday a few days ago, so it felt like a no-brainer that I should cover one of his films this week. We here at Fsr are big Carpenter fans and have already covered several of his films on Commentary Commentary — Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live — but while those titles are beloved I’m turning this week to one of his less-respected titles that I happen to love. 1987’s Prince of Darkness is a fun mix of gory horror and metaphysical mumbo-jumbo, and while some sketchy acting hurts it the film as a whole is terrifically creepy entertainment. The score is fantastic, the film ends strong, and the cast includes a bevy of Carpenter favorites including Donald Pleasence, Victor Wong, and Dennis Dun. Keep reading to see what I heard on the Prince of Darkness commentary. Prince of Darkness...

Stream This: Kurt Russell and John Carpenter Find Big Trouble In Little China
[Editor’s Note: Welcome to “Stream This,” our weekly feature where we single out television programs and movies of considerable merit that are available on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Crackle, or other streaming services. Look for a new recommendation every Thursday.] Not all that long into John Carpenter's rapturously cuckoo Big Trouble in Little China, intrepid truck driver Jack Burton (Kurt Russell), the film's ostensible hero, is rushing back to to the titular San Francisco neighborhood from the airport when a big rig, carrying Puma apparel, gets in front of him. Now, sure, one could excuse this seemingly inconsequential happening as just a reiteration of Burton's urgency in getting back to Little China, especially considering the fact that he just witnessed a kidnapping at the airport, including the abduction of his friend Wang's (Dennis Dun) would-be fiancee, Miao (Suzee Pai). In another sense, however, it's a revealing gaze into the work ethic and filmic philosophy that drives Carpenter: an acknowledgement and immediate dismissal of the corporate interests that fund movies both big and small. It's a blunt visual statement, sans any bullshit concept of embedding the advertisement or making the product part of the narrative,...

Why Dwayne Johnson is asking for 'Big Trouble' with his Carpenter remake
John Carpenter
I confess that my first reaction to this news was caught on film and you can now see it in photo form attached to this story. Here's the thing: I am on record as saying that I consider Dwayne Johnson a bit of a natural resource. I don't think the movies he makes are always worthy of his charisma and his genuine talent, but i think he's more than proven himself capable. I am hopeful when he announces a project that it'll be something that is as good as he is. I am also on record as saying that it's exhausting to get worked up about every single remake or sequel or reboot or whatever at this point. The industry has so clearly embraced that as an omnipresent business plan that it is wasted energy. It takes a lot to shake that loose from me now, but maybe this one...

11 Fun Facts About Big Trouble In Little China
Earlier this week, Funko announced the Big Trouble in Little China line of Pop! toys, and that inspired my next Fun Facts list. I watched this movie all of the time when I was a kid. I swear it was on a constant loop in my house for a little while there. The John Carpenter-directed movie stars Kurt Russell, and it was just such an incredibly fun movie, with great characters. I think it's about that time to show it to my own kids. Here are 11 Fun Facts about the movie that you may or may not know. It was hard to find decent clips from this film on YouTube to show you certain things, but I posted the original trailer, a supercut of Russell's best lines in the movie, and the most ridiculous death scene ever.

The story was originally written as a western but Carpenter thought it...

'Big Trouble in Little China' Returns as a Comic Book from John Carpenter
While 80s movie fans await the inevitable news that Big Trouble in Little China will be either remade or rebooted as a franchise with a younger, handsomer Jack Burton, it was announced today that director John Carpenter is returning to the 1986 cult classic starring Kurt Russell, only this time in comic book form. That's right, ol' Jack Burton will live again in a series of all-new adventures featuring some of the movie's best characters. Coolest part is, it picks up with Jack's hideous hitchhiker as seen at the thrilling climax of the original movie, creating what is essentially a true sequel that takes place at Wang's wedding. In stores June 4th!

Here is the official press release and cover art gallery:

Comics: First Look At Big Trouble In Little China
“You know what ol’ Jack Burton always says at a time like this?” This June, Boom! Studios will tell you just what ol’ Jack Burton says in his continuing adventures in Big Trouble In Little China, a new, ongoing series from comics favorites Eric Powell (The Goon) and Brian Churilla (The Sixth Gun: Sons of the Gun). The cult-classic film combined ‘80s supernatural action with ‘70s kung-fu flicks, and Boom! has the film’s original director, John Carpenter, working alongside Powell to bring that over-the-top spirit to the comic. Big Trouble in Little China (1986) - Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) is a simple man who doesn’t believe in ghosts or magic until he’s swept into a mind-boggling adventure deep within Chinatown’s mysterious underworld. Burton’s pal, Wang Chi (Dennis Dun), is trying to rescue his kidnapped fiancée. Egg Shen (Victor Wong), an enigmatic tour-bus driver seems...

Big Trouble in Little China Blu-ray Review
Big Trouble in Little China has made its way onto Blu-ray for the first time a couple of years shy of its 30th anniversary, and it’s a really lovely release. Drew Struzan’s wonderful original art adorns both the Deluxe Blu-Ray and SteelBook editions, and alongside the classic special features there are brand spanking new interviews with everyone from John Carpenter and Kurt Russell, to the stuntmen and visual effects producers. Needless to say it’s a must for any diehard fans of the film, but how does Carpenter’s cult martial arts comedy stand up in 2013?

It’s easy to see how Big Trouble failed to fully connect with audiences upon its 1986 release, and why it has remained divisive since despite its cult following. Whether deliberately or not, Carpenter crafted a movie that’s constantly hard to get a handle on. Expectations are constantly being subverted, red herrings...

‘Big Trouble in Little China’ Review (Arrow Video)
Stars: Kurt Russell, Dennis Dun, Kim Cattrall, James Hong, Victor Wong, Kate Burton, Donald Li, Carter Wong, James Pax | Written by Gary Goldman, David Z. Weinstein | Directed by John Carpenter

When you have favourite movies it always comes as a surprise when you hear that they bombed on original release, even more of a surprise when you learn that most of its failure was down to being buried by the film companies. This is the case of Big Trouble in Little China, a movie that now has such a cult following that it’s hard to see how it could have failed. Luckily for us we have Arrow Video to give us a Blu-ray steelbook release to truly celebrate the film.

Jack Burton (Russell) is the ultimate American hero, in his own mind. When he finds himself in the middle of gang warfare in Little China between the forces of...
