Quentin Tarantino mourns the “death” of Rick Dalton
Image
If you’ve been keeping up with Quentin Tarantino since 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, you’ll know that few characters have ever piqued his interest the way Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton has. Tarantino has teased a new book called “The Films of Rick Dalton,” and indeed, just last week, a mysterious new Wikipedia page went up that filled out Dalton’s filmography in an intriguing way. Now, via the official Twitter feed of the Video Archives Podcast, which he hosts with Roger and Gala Avary, he’s confirmed the “death” of Rick Dalton at the ripe old age of ninety. The podcast is also hyping a special commemorative episode dropping on Tuesday that will examine some of the best roles.

We are saddened by the news of the passing of actor Rick Dalton, best known for his roles in the hit TV series Bounty Law and The Fireman trilogy.

Quentin Tarantino to Release Two Novels, Including Expansion of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
Image
Aging like a fine wine (aka the opposite of too many whiskey sours), Quentin Tarantino’s latest film Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood continues to blossom like one of the director’s finest works over a year after release. Now, as the filmmaker looks towards wrapping up his career behind the camera with perhaps one final film, he has suggested he would get more into writing, and he’s now confirmed that desire by signing a two-film book deal.

Tarantino has inked the deal with HarperCollins and first up will be an expansion of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood with a new novel. Said to offer “a fresh, playful and shocking departure from the film,” according to the publisher, it will arrive as a mass market paperback, akin to the director’s pulp paperback favorites, alongside e-book and digital audio editions, this coming summer. A deluxe hardcover edition...

Quentin Tarantino Sets Two-Book HarperCollins Deal; ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ Novelization & ’70s Movie Deep Dive ‘Cinema Speculation’ To Follow
Image
Quentin Tarantino has signed a two book deal with Harper, the HarperCollins imprint. First up is Tarantino’s first work of fiction, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, a novel to be published next summer that breathes new life into the characters and the premise of a film that got 10 Oscar nominations and won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Brad Pitt. Tarantino has long been infatuated with the movie novelizations he read voraciously growing up, paperbacks that accompanied a film’s release. He has set in that tradition a book that teases out the characters played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Pitt. Appropriately, the throwback novel will start as a Harper Perennial mass market paperback, alongside e-book and digital audio editions. A deluxe hardcover edition will follow in the fall.

Tarantino’s second work with Harper will be a work of nonfiction, Cinema Speculation. Tarantino has often cited film critic...

Quentin Tarantino Says Leonardo DiCaprio's Character in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Is Bipolar
Director Quentin Tarantino recently revealed a new detail about Leonardo DiCaprio’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood character, Rick Dalton. In a video interview with Vanity Fair, Tarantino and DiCaprio discussed the mental state of Rick Dalton saying that he is bipolar and that the real-life inspiration behind the character and that mental condition was actor Pete Duel.

Duel starred in a 1970s Western series called Alias Smith and Jones, and he ended up committing suicide in 1971. While researching the actor, Tarantino learned he had “a drinking problem due to self-medicating his apparent undiagnosed bipolar disorder.” This is an element that was added to the character Rick.

Knowing this adds a whole new layer to Rick, his issues, his attitude, his mood swings, and how he acts throughout the film. From my own personal experience, I thought that Rick might be bipolar, especially with that scene where he has...

Review: "Cannon For Cordoba" (1970) Starring George Peppard; Kino Lorber Blu-ray Release
By Fred Blosser

“Cannon for Cordoba,” a 1970 film produced by Vincent M. Fennelly for the Mirisch Corporation, written by Stephen Kandel, directed by Paul Wendkos, and distributed by United Artists, has been released by Kino Lorber Studio Classics in an attractive new Blu-ray edition. In the movie, U.S. Army Captain Rod Douglas (George Peppard) leads a three-man team across the Mexican Border in 1916. Douglas has been assigned to gather intelligence on a predatory rebel general, Cordoba (Raf Vallone), who has confiscated American-owned property in Mexico. Wealthy U.S. ranchers and politicians are demanding that the Army secure the border with troops (an outcry for a $70 billion wall would have to wait another hundred years). After Douglas’ team enters Mexico, one of the trio, Adam, is captured and tortured to death by Cordoba’s troops. Douglas and the third ranger, Jackson (Don Gordon), escape to warn Gen. Pershing (John Russell...

Cannon for Cordoba
A middling entry in the genre of blow-it-up big action spectacles, Paul Wendkos’ Spain-filmed western gives us all the excitement promised by the poster, but with some cardboard characters and lumpy storytelling. George Peppard is on the job, however, and once again proves he can carry a big picture, flaws and all.

DVD Review: "Cannon For Cordoba" (1970) Starring George Peppard
By Lee Pfeiffer

MGM has released the 1970 Western Cannon For Cordoba as part of their burn-to-dvd line. This is yet another film that was written off as "run of the mill" at the time of its initial release but probably plays far better today when Westerns are scare commodities. The film is clearly designed to capitalize on movies such as The Professionals and The Wild Bunch, and while it certainly isn't in the league of those classics, it's a consistently engrossing and highly entertaining horse opera.  Set in 1916, when the Us was embroiled in assisting the Mexican government in suppressing "revolutionaries" who were really bandits, the plot centers on a crime kingpin named General Coroba (well played with charm and menace by Raf Vallone), who launches an audacious raid on American General Pershing's troops and succeeds in stealing a number of valuable cannons that will make him almost invulnerable...
