The Death Wish franchise, which began in 1974 and is based on a novel of the same name, has featured plenty of famous actors. Recognizable faces like Jeff Goldblum appear in cameos and antagonist roles, adding depth and diversity to the cast. The 2018 reboot sticks to the original's core, with Bruce Willis leading as Kersey & familiar faces like Elisabeth Shue starring.
The Death Wish franchise is thematically tricky, especially in an age where people truly seem to end debates with bullets as often as words. However, Brian Garfield's novel and its sequel, Death Sentence, are far more inclined to express repulsion towards unnecessary violence than admiration. Can the same be said for the films, which made the character of Paul Kersey more and more of a typical action hero? Not exactly.

Over a storied and celebrated career, actor Bruno Ganz has logged time with a handful of famed filmmakers including Eric Rohmer, Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders and more, and is perhaps best known for his roles in international hits like "Wings Of Desire" (directed by the latter) and "Downfall." And now, it looks like he's found another role that could gain him all kinds of attention thanks to nothing more than some good timing. Ridley Scott has cast the actor in "The Vatican," the pilot he's directing for Showtime (he's also producing the series). Tackling the current hot button, headline grabbing topic of the Catholic Church, the show will center on Kyle Chandler's Cardinal Thomas Duffy, a charismatic and progessive Archbishop of New York, and the various political maneuverings within the halls of power. And it seems it will go all the way to Rome with Ganz to play the fictional Pope Sixtus,...

He played a fallen Angel in Wim Wenders’ Wings Of Desire and now Bruno Ganz will play the Pope in Showtime’s drama pilot The Vatican. The Swiss-born actor, who also played Adolf Hitler in 2004′s Downfall, will take on the Holy garments as the soft-spoken, fictional Sixtus VI in the pilot, from Paul Attanasio and Ridley Scott. Ganz takes on his Papal role just two days after the real new Pope Francis I was elected and joins Pushing Daisies‘ Anna Friel and Kyle Chandler in the thriller about spirituality, power and politics set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic Church. Chandler plays the progressive New York Cardinal Thomas Duffy, and Friel plays his very secular, hard-living younger sister. Kyle Chandler, who is known for his role in the television series, Friday Night Lights, will be returning to the TV screen with Showtime’s new show, The Vatican.
Directed by Ridley Scott, The Vatican is an upcoming thriller that will examine the spiritual and political nature of the Catholic Church. This sounds a lot like Showtime’s The Borgias but it involves a contemporary setting.
Chandler is set to star in the lead role, portraying Cardinal Thomas Duffy, “a charismatic yet enigmatic” Archbishop of New York, whose progressive views and ideas cause quite a ruckus between the members of the Catholic Church. It is said that he ordains a woman, an uncommon action to carry out in the church.
With regard to the show, this won’t be Chandler’s first time working with the President of Showtime entertainment, David Nevins, as he was the executive producer of Friday Night Lights.

Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), who has seemingly been in every movie that came out in 2012, could be returning to the small screen this year for Showtime's drama pilot The Vatican. The series gained some extra interest this winter when it was announced Ridley Scott (Prometheus) would be directing the pilot, continuing a trend of film directors setting their sights newly on television (which is great news for TV fans). The Vatican will (unlike the network's other Vatican-related series, The Borgias) take place in modern times, and has been described as a "thriller" that will focus on both the politics and spiritual aspects of the modern day Catholic church. Hit the jump for more on the potential series, as well as Chandler's much-anticipated role. Chandler will be portraying Cardinal Thomas Duffy, a charismatic Archbishop of New York whose progressive ideas cause a schism (yes I went there) among church leaders.

Everyone's favorite Kyle Chandler has been cast to star in the pilot for Showtime's The Vatican, a contemporary thriller set in the modern-day Catholic Church. Chandler will play Cardinal Thomas Duffy, the charismatic and mysterious archbishop of New York whose progressive beliefs earn him both supporters and enemies within the Church. Ridley Scott is set to direct the pilot. It is slightly surprising that Chandler would take a job on TV (especially one where he can't be perfectly married to someone), considering his budding film career; however, more Chandler is never a bad thing, so we'll allow it. Amen.

Pretty much everyone in television has been clamoring for Kyle Chandler to come back to the medium that made him Coach Taylor for the last two years, but he's been quietly exploring a movie career with small roles in critically acclaimed films.
Now, he has finally signed on to come back to the small screen, with a role that's very different from the "Friday Night Lights" patriarch that made him a household name. (At least, in all the best households.)
Showtime has cast Chandler in their drama pilot "The Vatican," directed by Ridley Scott and written by "House" scribe Paul Attanasio. Centered around the politics of the modern Catholic Church, the show is described as "a provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church."

He has been one of the most wanted men for television series for the past two years. After passing on dozens of pilots, Kyle Chandler has finally picked his follow-up to Friday Night Lights, which won him an Emmy. Chandler is set as the lead in Vatican, Showtime‘s high-profile drama pilot from Oscar nominees Paul Attanasio and Ridley Scott. Also joining the pilot, written by Attanasio and to be directed by Scott in his pilot directing debut, is German actor Sebastian Koch (The Lives Of Others). They join previously cast Matthew Goode. Vatican reunites Chandler with Showtime entertainment president David Nevins, who as president of Imagine TV executive produced the critically acclaimed Friday Night Lights. Said to evoke The Sopranos and Upstairs, Downstairs, Vatican is described as a provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church. As American InGen team member Dieter Stark, Stormare co-starred in director Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated “Jurassic Park” sequel alongside Jeff Goldblum, Vince Vaughn and Julianne Moore. Although the film didn’t go over well with critics and earned $300 million less than the first film in the franchise, it still grossed a whopping $618 million in worldwide box office, making the film a bona fide hit. Spoiler alert: Stormare’s character is killed by a small, carnivorous dinosaur known as a Compsognathus from the Greek word for “elegant.”
Choice Quotation:
Dieter: It gives me the creeps, like it’s not scared.
Dr. Robert Burke (Thomas F. Duffy): There haven’t been any visitors on this island. There’s no reason for it to fear man.

I still don't know quite how I feel about Quentin Dupieux's horror/comedy film 'Rubber'. Yes, it's about a killer tire. I haven't seen it yet, so the jury is still out. Though from the trailer (below), it looks to be pretty bitchin'.
I am certainly feeling a tingling sense of hope as I view the new poster for the flick. Bloody Corpses? Hell yeah. You can't go wrong with an illustration that features carnage like that. You can see it below.
The movie is available via some VOD cable carriers and will be released in select theaters on br April 1st. Go 'Rubber' go!
