Rome, April 13 (Ians/Aki) Hollywood director Ridley Scott has filmed a TV series "The Vatican" in Rome, starring Bruno Ganz as the fictional present-day Pope Sixtus VI.

Scott, who last filmed in Rome the blockbuster "Gladiator", paid the city of Rome 50,000 euros a day to film in the area around St. Peter's Square, the Messaggero daily reported.

A crowd of tourists looked on as Scott and his crew filmed in Pius Xii Square at the top of the main road that leads to St. Peter's Square.

"The Vatican" movie's central character is a New York archbishop, Cardinal Thomas Duffy, played by Kyle Chandler.

The cast also includes Anna Friel as Cardinal Duffy's sister, and singer Rebecca Ferguson.

Bruno Ganz (Downfall) has been cast in the drama pilot as Pope Sixtus, described as “an unassuming and introspective caretaker of the Church, who struggles with his own legacy, and how history will judge his papacy.”

Ganz joins a cast that already includes Fnl alum Kyle Chandler, who will star as Cardinal Thomas Duffy, and Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies), who plays his sister.

Kyle Chandler is eying a return to TV with "Vatican," Showtime's new pilot.

The "Friday Night Lights" alum will play Cardinal Thomas Duffy, the Archbishop of New York, Showtime announced. Chandler's character is described as progressive, which alarms some in the Catholic Church. The actor joins Matthew Goode and Sebastian Koch, who've also signed on for the "Vatican" pilot, which Ridley Scott is attached to direct with a script from Paul Attansio.

“Kyle Chandler is one of the most talented and sought-after actors working today, and was a fantastic creative partner through five seasons of 'Friday Night Lights,'" David Nevins, president of entertainment at Showtime, said in a statement. "With Kyle, Matthew Goode and Sebastian Koch, Ridley and Paul have put together a powerhouse cast to anchor this incredibly timely show."

Pretty much everyone in television has been clamoring for Kyle Chandler to come back to the medium that made him Coach Taylor for the last two years, but he's been quietly exploring a movie career with small roles in critically acclaimed films.

Now, he has finally signed on to come back to the small screen, with a role that's very different from the "Friday Night Lights" patriarch that made him a household name. (At least, in all the best households.)

Showtime has cast Chandler in their drama pilot "The Vatican," directed by Ridley Scott and written by "House" scribe Paul Attanasio. Centered around the politics of the modern Catholic Church, the show is described as "a provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church."

Magnet Releasing has announced the DVD/Blu-ray release date for Quentin Dupieux's psycho-tire movie Rubber. The movie is speeding its way to store shelves on June 7th. Weird how thiings work nowadays, huh? first we had the VOD, then the 2 week long theatricla run and finally on store shelves. The film stars Thomas F. Duffy, Hayley Homes, Wings Hauser, Tara Jean O'Brien, Haley Ramm, David Bowe, Ethan Cohn, Pete Dicecco and Remy Thorne.

I still don't know quite how I feel about Quentin Dupieux's horror/comedy film 'Rubber'. Yes, it's about a killer tire. I haven't seen it yet, so the jury is still out. Though from the trailer (below), it looks to be pretty bitchin'.

I am certainly feeling a tingling sense of hope as I view the new poster for the flick. Bloody Corpses? Hell yeah. You can't go wrong with an illustration that features carnage like that. You can see it below.

The movie is available via some VOD cable carriers and will be released in select theaters on br April 1st. Go 'Rubber' go!
