Mark McCorkle & Bob Schooley, best known for creating, writing and executive producing Disney Channel’s Kim Possible, will receive the WGA West’s 2021 Animation Writers Caucus Animation Writing Award. The honor will be bestowed next month at the group’s virtual awards ceremony and member meeting.

The pair have specialized in adapting movie characters into TV series, with credits including Penguins of Madagascar, Monsters vs. Aliens, Disney’s Hercules, and Disney’s Aladdin: The Series. On the big screen, their credits include Hotel for Dogs and Sky High.

They also EPed two TV movies based on Kim Possible: Kim Possible: A Sitch in Time and Kim Possible Movie: So the Drama.

Routh announced his casting Tuesday morning over Netflix’s Geeked Twitter account, which also unveiled the series’ premiere year.

“I’m Brandon Routh and I play Gideon in the upcoming Magic: The Gathering animated series, coming to Netflix in 2022,” he said on social media. “For those of you that don’t know, Gideon is known for being the strong guy who always stands up for what’s right, just, and isn’t afraid to fight.”

The announcement was made during Wizards of the Coast’s Magic Showcase 2021 stream. Plot details on the series are still being kept under wraps, but it was confirmed that Routh will voice the character Gideon Jura. It was previously announced that the show expands on the stories of the Planeswalkers, which are the game’s magic-wielding heroes and villains.

In addition, it was announced that a prequel novel by Django Wexler will be released in conjunction with the series, which is slated to debut in 2022.

The novel, which hails from Del Rey Books, sees Planeswalkers Gideon Jura and Jace Beleren adventuring together as they right wrongs across the multiverse. But with very different insights into what they witness, it is safe to say that the partnership is under quite a bit of strain.

Netflix has finally revealed the first voice cast member for its upcoming animated “Magic: The Gathering” TV series, setting “Superman Returns” star Brandon Routh as the voice of Gideon Jura, an “unfalteringly heroic Planeswalker” on the show, which is set to debut in late 2022.

Nickelodeon and Entertainment One are teaming up on a new animated “Transformers” series, the network announced Thursday.

The half-hour series, described as an action-comedy, centers on “a new species of Transformers [who] must find their place and purpose among Autobots, Decepticons, and the human family that adopts them. It has been picked up for 26 episodes.

Ant Ward, who previously co-created the “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot for Nick, will executive produce the series alongside “Transformers: Rescue Bots” alum Nicole Dubuc. Dale Malinowski is co-executive producer.

Nickelodeon development executive Claudia Spinelli developed the project for Nick Animation Studios with Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, senior director of current series and development, animation. Conrad Montgomery will oversee production for Nick, and Mikiel Houser for eOne.

Craig Miller will receive the WGA West’s 2020 Animation Writers Caucus Animation Writing Award in recognition of his distinguished career and contributions to the animation field. The award will be presented by his longtime collaborator, comic book writer Marv Wolman, at the Caucus’ virtual awards ceremony on Tuesday.

Miller, who chairs the Caucus, has more than 300 credits to his name, including The Smurfs, Curious George, and Pocket Dragon Adventures.

“In his long distinguished career, Craig has been a tireless advocate for the writers of animation, working diligently to get writers like himself covered under a WGA contract,” the guild said. “The WGA West board of directors is proud and honored to give him this well-deserved award.”

Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” has been named the best adapted screenplay of 2018 by the Writers Guild of America, while Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade” was named the year’s best original screenplay in a surprising upset over Oscar Best Picture and screenplay nominees “Green Book,” “Roma” and “Vice.”

“Eighth Grade” is not even nominated for the original-screenplay Oscar, making it the first WGA screenplay winner not to be nominated for the Oscar since Michael Moore’s “Bowling for Columbine” in 2003.

While “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” is an Oscar screenplay nominee, it was not nominated for Best Picture and was competing against three films that had been nominated in that category — “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman” and “A Star Is Born” — plus “If Beale Street Could Talk.”

Prolific animation writer-producer Nicole Dubuc will receive the WGA West’s 2018 Animation Writers Caucus Animation Writing Award tonight at the annual Awc awards ceremony at the guild’s headquarters in Los Angeles.

Dubuc, who’s been nominated for seven daytime Emmys for writing and producing children’s animation shows, currently serves as the showrunner of the upcoming Disney Junior series The Rocketeer.

The award is presented to caucus members who have advanced the literature of animation in film and television throughout the years and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the animation writer.

“Nicole Dubuc has accomplished more in her time as an animation writer than most of us do in careers that are twice as long,” said WGA West president David A. Goodman. “She has crossed genres, busted barriers, and broken through ceilings not only as a writer, but also as a showrunner, an actress, and a labor leader.

3.5 Hera's Heroes

Last week, I said that the Sabine-centric episode of Star Wars Rebels didn’t do enough with the young Mandalorian’s background. This week's Hera's Heroes shows exactly what last week's episode could have done, tying a suspenseful story inextricably to Hera’s family history. It did so in a lot of ways, most spoken out loud by the end of the episode, but some left to the audience to consider. This exposition, smoother than usual, and dialogue that shows how solidly characterised the Ghost crew has become makes this another episode that shows that season three might be the best of the series.
