Began writing comics in the 1940s and worked for major publishers throughout his career. He also wrote one of the first graphic novels "It Rhymes with Lust" in 1950.

Comic book writer and co-creator of "The Doom Patrol" and "Deadman" for "Strange Adventures" for DC Comics. These creations were consciously designed to emulate Marvel Comics' innovative character-based storytelling style for superheroes, which Drake had warned DC's management would make the small rival publisher a major force in the business. Unfortunately for DC, the management scoffed at Drake's warning and was subsequently forced to play catch-up to Marvel in later years.

Interviewed in Tom Weaver's McFarland books "Eye on Science Fiction" (about The Flesh Eaters (1964)) and "A Sci-Fi Swarm and Horror Horde" (about 50,000 B.C. (Before Clothing) (1963)).

Created (with Gene Colan) the original version of Guardians of the Galaxy in 1969 (first published in Marvel Super-Heroes #18).
