John Sykes, a beloved guitarist who performed with Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake in the 1980s, has died at age 65 from cancer. The news was confirmed in a statement on Skyes’ official Facebook page.

“It is with great sorrow we share that John Sykes has passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer,” the statement read. “He will be remembered by many as a man with exceptional musical talent but for those who didn’t know him personally, he was a thoughtful, kind, and charismatic man whose presence lit up the room.

10 TV Shows That Tricked Us About Who The Main Character Was
Image
There are other possible possibilities with TV characters who end up being different from expected, such as the gag where the show jokingly introduces one character before directing focus to a less conventionally appealing one (which might also involve the first character's death). Misleading ad campaigns for movies and TV shows might also (intentionally) confuse the audience about who the main character is supposed to be. Hopefully, the decoy protagonist is a satisfying twist, rather than annoying shock bait.

The trope known as the "decoy protagonist" describes when a piece of media, such as a TV show, introduces a character and tricks the audience into believing they are the story's main character. This may be the case with TV shows that killed main characters early, completely undermining what the audience thought their long-term role would be. The most common scenario with the decoy protagonist is that after a character's introduction,...

An Ode to the Best St. Patrick’s Day Song: Thin Lizzy’s ‘Black Rose’
Robert Arkins in Les Commitments (1991)
The Irish have put up with a lot of bullshit over the years. There’s England. The Troubles. The kittening of the Celtic Tiger. Enya. It’s not been an easy history. And black people, those living in mostly white countries anyway, they’ve put up with a whole bunch of bullshit, too. So if we pretend there’s an iota of depressing truth being bandied about when, in Roddy Doyle’s novel The Commitments, the irrepressible yet wee bit naïve protagonist Jimmy says that the Irish are the blacks of Europe,...

Flashback: Thin Lizzy Rock for Irish Pride on ‘Roisin Dubh’
Phil Lynott
Thin Lizzy’s songs typically addressed badass rock & roll topics like bar fights, jailbreaks and medieval battles. But on Black Rose: A Rock Legend — their ninth LP, released 40 years ago today — the band paid tribute to their Irish homeland with a highly unusual and weirdly touching album-closing epic.

“Tell me the legends of long ago,” Phil Lynott sings over a rolling, waltz-time riff at the beginning of “Róisín Dubh (Black Rose): A Rock Legend,” named for an old Irish song that addresses the country as though it were a lover.

Dread Central's Best and Worst of 2011
Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!

Now, with a fresh movie-watching start before us, we're taking our usual yearly look back at the good, the bad, the Wtf, and everything in between.

And don't be lazy by just reading along! Get off of your asses and give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you if only to compare notes. Lots and lots of notes.

Speaking of notes, the most common complaint we've heard over the years is that we don't have one definitive list representing Dread Central as a whole so for 2011 we dropped everyone's choices in the blender, hit puree,...

Hobo With A Shotgun: DVD review
Director: Jason Eisener. Review: Adam Wing. “You can’t solve all the worlds problems with a shotgun.” Whether or not that be true, one thing’s for sure, this particular hobo is going to die trying - delivering justice one shell at a time. Rutger Hauer has long been deserving of a comeback, and a homeless vigilante with vengeance in mind could be just the ticket - we’ll call him Hobo for now. Hobo has a dream, to set up his own gardening business, ridding the world of unwanted landscape. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side though, and there’s a good chance he’s just pushed his cart into the wrong city, where crime prevails and an overlord reigns with violent and bloody malice. It’s a neon-filtered world - Mad Max with glitter balls - filled to the brim with armed robbers, corrupt cops and abused prostitutes.

Blu-ray Review: Hobo With A Shotgun – Better Grindhouse Film Than Grindhouse!
The Film

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

2007’s Grindhouse began a resurgence of the classic exploitation film, with a myriad of movies trying to emulate the look and feel of cult classics from the 70’s and 80’s. It was a fun idea, but the execution wasn’t entirely successful. Death Proof was for hardcore Tarantino fans only, whilst Planet Terror was an improvement but still disappointing.

The highlight by far was the fake trailers which ran in the middle, including Edgar Wright’s hilarious Don’t and Robert Rodriquez’s Machete. Machete itself became a feature film; being significantly more fun than Grindhouse, despite some poorly shoehorned political commentary and an increasingly hammy Robert De Niro.

Another of these fake trailers, Hobo with a Shotgun is now the second from Grindhouse to be extended into a feature length film. Originally created as a competition entry, it became exclusively attached to the...

This week's new films
Cell 211 (18)

(Daniel Monzón, 2009, Spa/Fr) Luis Tosar, Alberto Ammann, Antonio Resines. 113 mins

Sometimes all you need is a great set-up: a prison guard, first day on the job, gets trapped in a cell just as a riot breaks out, and must therefore pose as an inmate to survive. It's better not to know where this tough Spanish thriller goes from there, but rest assured you're in very good hands. There's tightrope tension and breakneck pace, but wider questions of honour and justice unfold, too – everything you could ask for, in fact.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (12A)

(David Yates, 2011, UK/Us) Daniel Radcliffe, Ralph Fiennes, Emma Watson. 130 mins

Having sat through the deathly dullness of Part 1, here's our reward: a rousing finale that strikes all the right notes, ties up 10 years' worth of loose ends, plunges you into 3D battle, and perhaps even wrings the odd tear – all without inducing effects fatigue.

Exclusive Interview With Hobo With A Shotgun Director Jason Eisener
Beginning life as a ‘fake’ trailer, made as part of a competition tied to the release of Grindhouse, Hobo with a Shotgun is now a fully fledged feature film and on July the 15th it finally reaches UK cinemas. “Delivering justice, one shell at a time” in the role of the titular Hobo is Rutger Hauer and accompanying him in ‘Scum Town’ are Pasha Ebrahimi, Robb Wells, Brian Downey and many more.

Hobo with a Shotgun is directed by Jason Eisener and we were recently given the opportunity to speak to him. Below is a transcription of our discussion.

There are films like Dead End Drive-in that seem to be big influences on you and their influence is clearly evident in Hobo. What were your key influences and how did you decide to incorporate them?

Me and John, the writer of the film, are best friends and grew up together.

Blu-ray Review: Hobo with a Shotgun
Hobo with a Shotgun gives you exactly what you'd expect from a movie called Hobo with a Shotgun. You can decide whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, but Magnolia has certainly put together a package worth owning if you fall on the side of the former.

Like Machete, Hobo with a Shotgun began as one of the fake trailers sandwiched between the Grindhouse double feature of Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror and Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, though Hobo appeared only in Canadian cinemas after it won a contest giving it the privilege to do so. Long story short, the fake trailer's director (Jason Eisener) was ultimately given $3 million to make a feature from that premise and this is the result.

This exploitation film, in case the title isn't descriptive enough, takes the Death Wish formula and puts it in hands of a homeless man played by Rutger Hauer...

DVD Review: Hobo With A Shotgun
Hobo with a Shotgun took old school grind house fans by storm and now I’ve finally witness it on this 2-Disc Collector’s Edition.

The movie stars Rutger Hauer as a nameless hobo in search of a nice town to start over in and to call his home but he picks the wrong town with Hope Town, which is actually pretty much hopeless, that’s right people.

Hauer takes the wrong jump off the train. He walks into a town that is more post-apocalyptic than anything that has to do with the word hope. He meets up with Abby (Milly Dunsworth) a hooker with a heart of gold, yes you’ve heard that before haven’t you. He actually saves her a few times and they form a weird bond. The hobo meets up with town gangster known as The Drake (Brian Downey), his twisted sons and their gang...

As subtle as its title, Hobo with a Shotgun is an in-your-face orgy of Seventies/Eighties grindhouse exploitation elements that goes way over the line in terms of blood and gore and good taste. That said, it’s bound to find a large audience that can’t get enough of the sicko stuff.

Rutger Hauer is mad as hell and is not going to take it anymore in Hobo with a Shotgun.

Film Review: Rutger Hauer Stars in Grindhouse Lunacy of ‘Hobo With a Shotgun’
Rating: 3.5/5.0

Chicago – What do you expect from a movie called “Hobo With a Shotgun” (other than perhaps the most truthful title since “Snakes on a Plane”)? If you’re spending hard-earned money on a movie about a vengeful homeless person played by Rutger Hauer, you probably know what you’re in for. On those grindhouse terms, “Hobo With a Shotgun” totally works. It’s so far over-the-top that it makes “Machete” look believable, but that’s why it’s effective. Unlike so many movies you will see this season, “Hobo With a Shotgun” delivers.

Rutger Hauer plays the title character, a boxcar jumper who finds himself in the ironically-named “Hope Town,” a place that would make Gomorrah look like a lovely place for a summer vacation. Shortly after his arrival, our hero witnesses a horrific event in the center of town. The ringmaster of sin and chaos, The Drake (Brian Downey...

Hobo with a Shotgun | Review - SXSW Film 2011
Director: Jason Eisener Writers: Jason Eisener, John Davies, Rob Cotterill Starring: Rutger Hauer, Gregory Smith, Molly Dunsworth, Brian Downey, Nick Bateman I really did not want to pile onto the "I hate Hobo with a Shotgun" bandwagon, especially since Dave Campbell (Smells Like Screen Spirit's Editor-in-Chief) and I seem to be the only ones riding on it. (In case you missed it, here is Dave's review of Hobo with a Shotgun.) I typically do not read reviews of films before I write my own, but in this instance I read everything that has been published (to date) on IMDb.com and Rotten Tomatoes; and, I have to admit, I really do not understand why so many people are raving about it. And that, my friends, is the reason I want to explain why I hopped on this god-forsaken bandwagon in the first place... Hopping off a train -- because that...

Hobo With A Shotgun Review
[This review is a reprint of my review that ran during this year's Sundance Film Festival. Hobo with a Shotgun blasts its way into Us theaters this weekend.] Sometimes, being insane in your filmmaking isn’t enough. To make something special, a filmmaker requires a spark of creativity to light the flames of a madness explosion. Hobo with a Shotgun is a Hiroshima of creative insanity. Director Jason Eisener has not only paid homage to 70s exploitation films, he’s made a film that could easily have stood amongst it ranks. Every time you think the movie can’t become any more crazy, any more grotesque, or any more disgusting, it takes out its penis and starts masturbating in public while raving about how cans of Progresso soup are running a shadow government. The film is based off a fake trailer Eisener made for the 2007 Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodrigues flick Grindhouse. Expanded in to a feature film, the story centers on a hobo (Rutger Hauer) who has rode the rails to Hope Fuck Town, the unhappiest place on...

Movie Review: Hobo with a Shotgun (2011)
Rutger Hauer in Hobo with a Shotgun

Photo: Magnet Releasing Hobo with a Shotgun is terrible, and for me to dedicate more than those six words to this review is to give it more than it deserves. But the unwritten rules say I have to be fair and make a case for my opinion, which in this case is fine since I have a few questions I think need to be asked.

This is the second film to come out of the fake trailer sector in recent years. Similar to Robert Rodriguez's Machete, Hobo with a Shotgun started as a result of the Quentin Tarantino and Rodriguez 2007 teaming, Grindhouse. Co-writer and director Jason Eisener's Hobo with a Shotgun fake trailer was the winner of a contest that saw his trailer played in front of screenings of Grindhouse in Canada. A year later Eisener became a mild online sensation...

Exclusive: Jason Eisener and Rob Cotterill Talk Hobo with a Shotgun and More
It’s no secret that the story behind Hobo with a Shotgun’s four year journey to the big screen has been a remarkable one. In 2007, when Eisener won the Grindhouse faux trailer competition sponsored by Robert Rodriguez and the SXSW Film Festival, he was a relatively unknown Canadian filmmaker who put together his contest winning entry on a budget less than what many of us spend on groceries a week.

Now, Eisener and the feature film adaptation of his trailer of the same name are everywhere these days and for very good reason. Turns out that Eisener’s tale of a street urchin dishing up justice with a shotgun and a dream for safer streets in Hope Town has become a cultural landmark- all before the movie even bows in a limited theatrical release this Friday courtesy of Magnet Releasing.

Recently, Dread Central had the opportunity to talk with...

Hobo With A Shotgun to blast the UK
It began as an award winning “fake” Grindhouse trailer now, Hobo With A Shotgun, director Jason Eisener’s full-on, no-holds-barred, kick-ass movie tribute to the grind house movies of the 1970s and 80s, is heading to the UK! Rutger Hauer fills the title role inspired by countless exploitation classics, and its more than great to see him back! The splattery goodness kicks of in UK cinemas July 22nd. Synopsis: When an ageing Hobo (Hauer) jumps from a freight car in a new city hoping for a fresh start in life, he soon realizes he has well and truly reached the end of the line. He finds himself trapped in an urban hell, an anarchic world overrun by murderers, rapists, paedophiles, petty crooks, prostitutes and corrupt cops. Reigning supreme over them all is the city’s crime boss, Drake (Brian Downey), and his two insanely sadistic sons, Slick (Gregory Smith) and...

Jason Eisener at an event for Hobo with a Shotgun (2011)
Rutger Hauer stars in this bloody spin-off about a vigilant yeg, in theaters May 6th

Hobo with a Shotgun, which spun-off from a trailer created for the theatrical release Grindhouse, is a gleefully gory shot of pure schlock, and one of the best times you will have at the movies this year. It's a shocking, funny, and downright dirty ode to The Toxic Avenger and Street Trash with a little bit of Robocop thrown in for good measure.

80s action icon Rutger Hauer stars as the title character, a train hopping yeg who stumbles into a corrupt town full of sodomizers, baby killers, and drug pushers. Disgusted with the nihilistic anarchy that surrounds his ever-waking moment, this Hobo with a Shotgun decides to take maters into his own hands and clean up the streets one shell casing at a time.

Hobo with a Shotgun (2011)
Directed by: Jason Eisener

Written by: John Davies

Cast: Rutger Hauer, Brian Downey, Gregory Smith, Molly Dunsworth, Nick Bateman

Things are pretty bad in Hope Town.

The place is ruled by a violent sadist known as The Drake (Brian Downey), along with his two evil sons, Ivan (Nick Bateman) and Slick (Gregory Smith). The town is completely under their control, and the police utterly in their pocket. The streets are anarchy, violence reigns; murders, robberies, and rapes abound. Colloquially, the town has shrugged off its cheery name and is known on the street as 'Scum Town'.

Somehow this dreary location became the stopping off point for an old hobo (Rutger Hauer). Our hobo takes the train in - as hobos are wont to do - and begins his standard business of begging up some change. He soon has a nasty run-in with Drake's evil sons, and then makes good with Abby (Molly Dunsworth), a Hooker-with-a-Heart-of-Gold.

Executors to Control Late Gary Moore's Mansion
Late guitar legend Gary Moore left behind an estate worth $3.2 million after his death in February. The Thin Lizzy rocker died from a suspected heart attack while on holiday in Spain with his girlfriend Petra Nioduschewski.

According to Sunday Mirror, records show the musician left behind assets of more than $3.2 million, which was reduced to around $1.6 million after deductions. A judge in England granted executors of his estate temporary control of his companies until final settlement is negotiated.

He was married twice and is survived by two sons and a daughter.

Speaking about Moore's death, Brian Downey admitted he was shocked about the news. "I am in total shock," so he said. "He will always be in my thoughts and prayers and I just can't believe he is gone."...

[Interview] Jason Eisener and Rob Cotterill on ‘Hobo With a Shotgun’
In the midst of SXSW, Hobo with a Shotgun writer/director Jason Eisener and producer Rob Cotterill made some time to sit down with Tfs for a few minutes and discuss the film. Check it out below and see Hobo With a Shotgun on VOD today.

Tfs: I talked to you on Twitter about a month ago and you had said you had tried to get professional wrestler Jake “The Snake” Roberts for a part in Hobo with a Shotgun. What part were you thinking for him and why didn’t it end up working out?

Je: Jake “The Snake” Roberts is one of my favorite wrestlers of all-time; I think he’s probably one of the best actor-wrestlers of all-time. He wasn’t a crazy physical guy, but he could control an audience just by his presence. And I was thinking “that’s a lot of who The Drake...

Hobo with a Shotgun Red Band Trailer
Bear in mind this is a red band clip therefore you probably don’t want to watch it if you’re squeamish! I got to see the movie at SXSW and it’s completely messed up but in a very good way. The movie uses insane violence but in a very comedic way keeping the audience entertained throughout. I guess you could liken it to The Grindhouse Style of movies in Planet Terror and Death Proof which if you’ve not seen, you simply must!

Hobo with a Shotgun stars Rutger Hauer, Gregory Smith, Robb Wells, Brian Downey, Molly Dunsworth and Nick Bateman.

Synopsis: A vigilante homeless man pulls into a new city and finds himself trapped in urban chaos, a city where crime rules and where the city’s crime boss reigns. Seeing an urban landscape filled with armed robbers, corrupt cops, abused prostitutes and even a pedophile Santa,...

Read our exclusive interview with actor Rutger Hauer, who portrays the title character in the new action-adventure-crime movie ‘Hobo with a Shotgun.’ The movie, which will be available On Demand on April 1 and hits theaters on May 6, 2011, was based on the fake Canadian trailer that was attached to the 2007 double horror feature ‘Grindhouse.’ ‘Hobo with a Shotgun’ follows Hobo, who is determined to rid the crime that plagues the city he lives in, especially the corruption that is caused by main crime boss Drake (played by Brian Downey). DVD Review: Lexx – The Complete Series
Lexx: The Complete Series

Stars: Brian Downey, Eva Habermann, Michael McManus, Jeffrey Hirschfield, Xenai Seeberg | Created by Paul Donovan

A cult hit known for its quirky, sexually charged adult storylines and ‘boldly’ talking sci-fi where others had not gone before, Lexx finally hits DVD in a complete series boxset from Mediumrare Entertainment.

Opening with four television movies, Lexx caused a huge splash on its initial airing on both sides of the pond, with Channel 5 (as it known at the time) scoring massive ratings for both the 4-movie mini-series and the three series that followed. Very much a product of the 90s, the series is set in a dystopian future and follows a rag-tag group of fugitives flying around in a giant dragonfly-looking spaceship, the Lexx of the title, which is, according to its creators, “the most powerful destructive force in the universe”.

Unlike many space-set sci-fi series of the...

Hobo with a Shotgun Review
Hobo with a Shotgun Directed by: Jason Eisener Written by: John Davies, Jason Eisener and Rob Cotterill Starring: Rutger Hauer, Molly Dunsworth, Gregory Smith, Nick Bateman, Brian Downey, Jeremy Akerman Ever since genre fanatics like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas took over the movie industry throughout the late '70s and early '80s, people have been saying that b-movies have become the new a-movies. However, today that has become even more true with big name directors like Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez literally attempting to emulate the look and feel of the low budget grindhouse flicks that they grew up on. The truth is, these retro-style tributes are not always easy to pull off, and as the commercial failure of Grindhouse proved, they are not always easy to sell either. But every now and then someone manages to get it right, and Hobo with a Shotgun most certainly falls into that category.

Hobo with a Shotgun Review
This review was originally posted on Andrew’s blog I Can’t Get Laid in This Town

Part of me actually toyed with talking about the social and political ideologies at the heart of Hobo With a Shotgun. In many ways, Jason Eisner’s film is about how Canadian and American societies choose to view the lower classes and the exploitation of the disenfranchised. The film is almost Shakespearean in scope, in a way that not too many people will be able to fully recognize or appreciate. The script is smarter than your average exploitation fare (if you stop to recognize such things) and the lead performance of Rutger Hauer as the titular hobo who speaks softly and carries a big stick is the kind of thing that would play great on stage.

But chances are, if you are going to see a film like Hobo with a Shotgun, you...

Joshua Reviews Jason Eisner’s Hobo With A Shotgun [SXSW 2011 Review]
Grindhouse style films are an interesting beast, within the world of film.

Often created out of promotional material like posters or low-budget trailers, no film personifies the idea of the modern Grindhouse film quite like the feature debut from up and coming director Jason Eisner, Hobo With A Shotgun.

Based off of a trailer submitted to a contest inspired by the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez double feature Grindhouse, Hobo With A Shotgun has become one of the most anticipated films for fans of the genre, as it not only mixes a truly great and fantastically campy premise, but a cast and crew to kill for.

And while it may not be for everyone, Hobo more than lives up to the hype.

Not much deeper than the title itself, Hobo follows the titular homeless man as he finds himself in the closest thing to hell this world has. After playing witness to a brutal robbery,...

SXSW Review: 'Hobo With a Shotgun' is a Gore-Covered Love Letter
There's a subset of fans who will definitely have the time of their life watching Jason Eisener's Hobo With a Shotgun. They're the people who watched the violent films of the ‘80s, whose parents allowed them to stay up late and watch the likes of Dolph Lundgren and Rutger Hauer blasting enemies with vicious, juicy delight. Eisener's film, based on his trailer originally a part of Tarantino/Rodriguez's Grindhouse project, bottles that sensibility, shakes it up, and splatters it all over the screen. What's more, he's brought Hauer himself along for the gory ride, and the resulting cinematic feat is a bloody good time. Quite literally so. Rutger Hauer plays the titular Hobo, no name given, who rides into the appropriately named Hope Town on a freight car. The town is overrun by prostitutes, drug dealers, and generally amoral human beings and run by the megalomaniacal The Drake, played by Brian Downey.

Hobo With A Shotgun Review: I Wupped Batman's Ass
Hobo With A Shotgun is the most accurate movie title I've come across in many years. It's a film about a hobo with a shotgun, dispatching criminal elements with his trusty shotgun, in the faux grindhouse style we've become accustomed to. It's hard to deny the sheer bloodsplody fun of the film, and as I've been telling people asking if they should see it, "If you're excited to see a hobo kill people with a shotgun, then you'll get what you want." The only thing that really bothers me is that once more we're subject to the ironic seventies style grindhouse motif. I really wished that writer/director Jason Eisener had eschewed the winking and just made a real B-movie. Rutger Hauer's performance is so earnest and hilarious, I kinda wish they weren't just making a disposable bloodfest. B-movies can be cheesy, hyper-violent, corny, zany, without having to pretend to be bad on purpose.

Additional posters that have been released in the SXSW poster collection include a "Director's Series" for Duncan Jones with "Source Code" and "Moon", by artist Olly Moss, and a poster for "Paul", by artist Tom Whalen. [SXSW Review] Hobo with a Shotgun
Hobo with a Shotgun is an exploitation movie done right; along with its hyperviolence and sadistic sense of humor, it’s also dark and gritty, a dirty movie that pulls no punches. Rutger Hauer stars as the title character, a bum who arrives by train into a city that is overrun with crime and corruption. At first, he attempts to ignore it and just go about his begging ways, attempting to save up enough money to buy a lawnmower from a pawn shop. But after saving a young prostitute named Abby (Molly Dunsworth), he is attacked and beaten up for his troubles with the help of a corrupt police force. With the police of no help, Hobo decides that he’s going to have to take justice into his own hands, and takes to the streets shotgun in tow to start ridding the city of its crime. This raises the...

Great new Hobo With A Shotgun poster that’s slightly Nsfw
Hobo With a Shotgun, a film that’s turning out to be one of the most anticipated of 2011 is a “Grindhouse” style flick that’s an homage to the low-budget 80s style action movies, just got a new poster. Rutger Hauer stares in the film as the Hobo with that shotgun, who goes on a bloody, violent killing spree. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the film, most of them celebrating the straight up craziness of the whole film. This new poster comes from the Alamo Drafthouse’s boutique merchandise creator Mondo, who designed the poster to commemorate the screening of the film at the SXSW Film Festival. Check out the full sized poster after the jump.

Check out the trailer for the film right here:

Hobo With a Shotgun comes from director Jason Eisener and stars Hauer, Gregory Smith, Molly Dunsworth, Brian Downey and Nick Bateman. Read...
