John Sykes, a beloved guitarist who performed with Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake in the 1980s, has died at age 65 from cancer. The news was confirmed in a statement on Skyes’ official Facebook page.

“It is with great sorrow we share that John Sykes has passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer,” the statement read. “He will be remembered by many as a man with exceptional musical talent but for those who didn’t know him personally, he was a thoughtful, kind, and charismatic man whose presence lit up the room.

There are other possible possibilities with TV characters who end up being different from expected, such as the gag where the show jokingly introduces one character before directing focus to a less conventionally appealing one (which might also involve the first character's death). Misleading ad campaigns for movies and TV shows might also (intentionally) confuse the audience about who the main character is supposed to be. Thin Lizzy’s songs typically addressed badass rock & roll topics like bar fights, jailbreaks and medieval battles. But on Black Rose: A Rock Legend — their ninth LP, released 40 years ago today — the band paid tribute to their Irish homeland with a highly unusual and weirdly touching album-closing epic.

“Tell me the legends of long ago,” Phil Lynott sings over a rolling, waltz-time riff at the beginning of “Róisín Dubh (Black Rose): A Rock Legend,” named for an old Irish song that addresses the country as though it were a lover.

I cannot recommend Valhalla Rising enough. It’s visually amazing (every frame of the film is staged as if it’s a painting) and thoroughly unique.

Director: Jason Eisener. Review: Adam Wing. “You can’t solve all the worlds problems with a shotgun.” Whether or not that be true, one thing’s for sure, this particular hobo is going to die trying - delivering justice one shell at a time. Rutger Hauer has long been deserving of a comeback, and a homeless vigilante with vengeance in mind could be just the ticket - we’ll call him Hobo for now. Hobo has a dream, to set up his own gardening business, ridding the world of unwanted landscape. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side though, and there’s a good chance he’s just pushed his cart into the wrong city, where crime prevails and an overlord reigns with violent and bloody malice. It’s a neon-filtered world - Mad Max with glitter balls - filled to the brim with armed robbers, corrupt cops and abused prostitutes.

2007’s Grindhouse began a resurgence of the classic exploitation film, with a myriad of movies trying to emulate the look and feel of cult classics from the 70’s and 80’s. It was a fun idea, but the execution wasn’t entirely successful. Death Proof was for hardcore Tarantino fans only, whilst Planet Terror was an improvement but still disappointing.

The highlight by far was the fake trailers which ran in the middle, including Edgar Wright’s hilarious Don’t and Robert Rodriquez’s Machete. Machete itself became a feature film; being significantly more fun than Grindhouse, despite some poorly shoehorned political commentary and an increasingly hammy Robert De Niro.

Beginning life as a ‘fake’ trailer, made as part of a competition tied to the release of Grindhouse, Hobo with a Shotgun is now a fully fledged feature film and on July the 15th it finally reaches UK cinemas. “Delivering justice, one shell at a time” in the role of the titular Hobo is Rutger Hauer and accompanying him in ‘Scum Town’ are Pasha Ebrahimi, Robb Wells, Brian Downey and many more.

Hobo with a Shotgun is directed by Jason Eisener and we were recently given the opportunity to speak to him. Below is a transcription of our discussion.

There are films like Dead End Drive-in that seem to be big influences on you and their influence is clearly evident in Hobo. What were your key influences and how did you decide to incorporate them?

Me and John, the writer of the film, are best friends and grew up together.

Hobo with a Shotgun gives you exactly what you'd expect from a movie called Hobo with a Shotgun. You can decide whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, but Magnolia has certainly put together a package worth owning if you fall on the side of the former.

Like Machete, Hobo with a Shotgun began as one of the fake trailers sandwiched between the Grindhouse double feature of Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror and Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, though Hobo appeared only in Canadian cinemas after it won a contest giving it the privilege to do so. Long story short, the fake trailer's director (Jason Eisener) was ultimately given $3 million to make a feature from that premise and this is the result.

This exploitation film, in case the title isn't descriptive enough, takes the Death Wish formula and puts it in hands of a homeless man played by Rutger Hauer...

As subtle as its title, Hobo with a Shotgun is an in-your-face orgy of Seventies/Eighties grindhouse exploitation elements that goes way over the line in terms of blood and gore and good taste. That said, it’s bound to find a large audience that can’t get enough of the sicko stuff.

Chicago – What do you expect from a movie called “Hobo With a Shotgun” (other than perhaps the most truthful title since “Snakes on a Plane”)? But the unwritten rules say I have to be fair and make a case for my opinion, which in this case is fine since I have a few questions I think need to be asked.

This is the second film to come out of the fake trailer sector in recent years. Similar to Robert Rodriguez's Machete, Hobo with a Shotgun started as a result of the Quentin Tarantino and Rodriguez 2007 teaming, Grindhouse. Co-writer and director Jason Eisener's Hobo with a Shotgun fake trailer was the winner of a contest that saw his trailer played in front of screenings of Grindhouse in Canada. It’s no secret that the story behind Hobo with a Shotgun’s four year journey to the big screen has been a remarkable one. In 2007, when Eisener won the Grindhouse faux trailer competition sponsored by Robert Rodriguez and the SXSW Film Festival, he was a relatively unknown Canadian filmmaker who put together his contest winning entry on a budget less than what many of us spend on groceries a week.

Things are pretty bad in Hope Town.

The place is ruled by a violent sadist known as The Drake (Brian Downey), along with his two evil sons, Ivan (Nick Bateman) and Slick (Gregory Smith). The town is completely under their control, and the police utterly in their pocket. The streets are anarchy, violence reigns; murders, robberies, and rapes abound. Colloquially, the town has shrugged off its cheery name and is known on the street as 'Scum Town'.

Somehow this dreary location became the stopping off point for an old hobo (Rutger Hauer). Our hobo takes the train in - as hobos are wont to do - and begins his standard business of begging up some change. He soon has a nasty run-in with Drake's evil sons, and then makes good with Abby (Molly Dunsworth), a Hooker-with-a-Heart-of-Gold.

Late guitar legend Gary Moore left behind an estate worth $3.2 million after his death in February. The Thin Lizzy rocker died from a suspected heart attack while on holiday in Spain with his girlfriend Petra Nioduschewski.

According to Sunday Mirror, records show the musician left behind assets of more than $3.2 million, which was reduced to around $1.6 million after deductions. A judge in England granted executors of his estate temporary control of his companies until final settlement is negotiated.

He was married twice and is survived by two sons and a daughter.

Speaking about Moore's death, Brian Downey admitted he was shocked about the news. "I am in total shock," so he said. "He will always be in my thoughts and prayers and I just can't believe he is gone."...

In the midst of SXSW, Hobo with a Shotgun writer/director Jason Eisener and producer Rob Cotterill made some time to sit down with Tfs for a few minutes and discuss the film. Check it out below and see Hobo With a Shotgun on VOD today.

Tfs: I talked to you on Twitter about a month ago and you had said you had tried to get professional wrestler Jake “The Snake” Roberts for a part in Hobo with a Shotgun. What part were you thinking for him and why didn’t it end up working out?

Bear in mind this is a red band clip therefore you probably don’t want to watch it if you’re squeamish! I got to see the movie at SXSW and it’s completely messed up but in a very good way. The movie uses insane violence but in a very comedic way keeping the audience entertained throughout. I guess you could liken it to The Grindhouse Style of movies in Planet Terror and Death Proof which if you’ve not seen, you simply must!

Hobo with a Shotgun, which finds Rutger Hauer starring as a homeless vigilante on the war path, has been given a May 6th release date. To help celebrate the impending theatrical debut of this Grindhouse spin-off, Magnolia Pictures has released a second trailer, and a featurette in support of this gory, hard-hitting thriller. However, today that has become even more true with big name directors like Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez literally attempting to emulate the look and feel of the low budget grindhouse flicks that they grew up on. The truth is, these retro-style tributes are not always easy to pull off, and as the commercial failure of Grindhouse proved, they are not always easy to sell either. But every now and then someone manages to get it right, and Hobo with a Shotgun most certainly falls into that category.

Part of me actually toyed with talking about the social and political ideologies at the heart of Hobo With a Shotgun. In many ways, Jason Eisner’s film is about how Canadian and American societies choose to view the lower classes and the exploitation of the disenfranchised. The film is almost Shakespearean in scope, in a way that not too many people will be able to fully recognize or appreciate. The script is smarter than your average exploitation fare (if you stop to recognize such things) and the lead performance of Rutger Hauer as the titular hobo who speaks softly and carries a big stick is the kind of thing that would play great on stage.

Often created out of promotional material like posters or low-budget trailers, no film personifies the idea of the modern Grindhouse film quite like the feature debut from up and coming director Jason Eisner, Hobo With A Shotgun.

Based off of a trailer submitted to a contest inspired by the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez double feature Grindhouse, Hobo With A Shotgun has become one of the most anticipated films for fans of the genre, as it not only mixes a truly great and fantastically campy premise, but a cast and crew to kill for.

There's a subset of fans who will definitely have the time of their life watching Jason Eisener's Hobo With a Shotgun. They're the people who watched the violent films of the ‘80s, whose parents allowed them to stay up late and watch the likes of Dolph Lundgren and Rutger Hauer blasting enemies with vicious, juicy delight. Eisener's film, based on his trailer originally a part of Tarantino/Rodriguez's Grindhouse project, bottles that sensibility, shakes it up, and splatters it all over the screen. What's more, he's brought Hauer himself along for the gory ride, and the resulting cinematic feat is a bloody good time. Quite literally so. Rutger Hauer plays the titular Hobo, no name given, who rides into the appropriately named Hope Town on a freight car. The town is overrun by prostitutes, drug dealers, and generally amoral human beings and run by the megalomaniacal The Drake, played by Brian Downey.

Hobo With A Shotgun is the most accurate movie title I've come across in many years. It's a film about a hobo with a shotgun, dispatching criminal elements with his trusty shotgun, in the faux grindhouse style we've become accustomed to. It's hard to deny the sheer bloodsplody fun of the film, and as I've been telling people asking if they should see it, "If you're excited to see a hobo kill people with a shotgun, then you'll get what you want." The only thing that really bothers me is that once more we're subject to the ironic seventies style grindhouse motif. I really wished that writer/director Jason Eisener had eschewed the winking and just made a real B-movie. Rutger Hauer's performance is so earnest and hilarious, I kinda wish they weren't just making a disposable bloodfest. B-movies can be cheesy, hyper-violent, corny, zany, without having to pretend to be bad on purpose.

Hobo With a Shotgun, a film that’s turning out to be one of the most anticipated of 2011 is a “Grindhouse” style flick that’s an homage to the low-budget 80s style action movies, just got a new poster. Rutger Hauer stares in the film as the Hobo with that shotgun, who goes on a bloody, violent killing spree. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the film, most of them celebrating the straight up craziness of the whole film. This new poster comes from the Alamo Drafthouse’s boutique merchandise creator Mondo, who designed the poster to commemorate the screening of the film at the SXSW Film Festival.
