Criminal Minds Star Matthew Gray Gubler's New TV Series Gets an Unfortunate Update
Image
CBS recently announced Criminal Minds star Matthew Gray Gubler was set to star in the upcoming procedural drama Einstein. However, soon after the official reveal that the show had been ordered, the network decided to push the series back by a full year to the 2026-27 TV season.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the decision to push Einstein to next year came about due to a lack of space in CBS's 2025-26 schedule. It made the most sense for the network to push the series to the 2026-27 TV season. Einstein will follow Gubler, previously best known for his role as Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds, another genius, as Albert Einstein's great-grandson, Lew Einstein. This is the second attempt at the series, as a different version of Einstien was announced in 2020 by CBS but was subsequently dropped.

Einstein's synopsis reads: "Brilliant but directionless Lew, the great-grandson of Albert Einstein, spends...

CBS Delays Matthew Gray Gubler Drama ‘Einstein’ Until 2026-2027 TV Season
Image
CBS is experimenting with its own sense of space and time: The network’s drama “Einstein,” recently ordered to series and targeted for next season, will be instead be held until the following year.

That means the Matthew Gray Gubler starrer, which was first ordered as a pilot in August 2024, won’t actually hit the airwaves until two years later — during the 2026-2027 TV season. Per CBS, the reason is that there just wasn’t room for “Einstein” during the upcoming 2025-2026 frame.

Eye execs are making their final decisions on next season’s schedule right now, and are set to unveil its fall 2025 plans at a press conference on Wednesday, May 7. It’s believed that CBS execs decided there wasn’t room on the schedule for “Einstein,” and that the show might benefit from a longer pre-production time.

Other new shows already ordered to series next season include “Blue Bloods” spinoff “Boston Blue,...

CBS Gives Drama Pilot Order to Detective Drama ‘Einstein,’ From ‘Monk’ Creator
Image
CBS has given a pilot order to “Einstein,” from “Monk” creator Andy Breckman. Breckman is adapting “Einstein” from a German format; the show revolves around the great grandson of Albert Einstein — described as “brilliant but directionless.” The character is a tenured professor who gets into trouble with the law — and for retribution, must help a local police detective solve her cases.

Breckman is writer/exec producer on the project, while Randy Zisk is director/exec producer. The series, from CBS Studios, will also be executive produced by Tariq Jalil; Rose Hughes, Rodrigo Herrera Ibarguengoytia and Laura Beetz (Seven One Studios International).

The original “Einstein” started as a TV movie in 2015 starring Tom Beck (“Alarm for Cobra 11”) and from writers Martin Ritzenhoff and Matthias Dinter. Ritzenhoff and Dinter then turned it into a series through Zeitsprung Pictures; the show ran for three seasons and was distributed to over 100 territories.

CBS Orders ‘Einstein’ Crime Procedural Pilot From ‘Monk’ Duo For 2025-26 Consideration
Image
CBS continues to move ahead with its long-term development strategy, ordering another pilot targeting the 2025-26 broadcast season. The network has picked up to pilot drama Einstein (working title), from the Monk team of creator/executive producer Andy Breckman and director/executive producer Randy Zisk.

It follows a pilot order for comedy Dmv and a development room for comedy Eternally Yours (working title) — all looking to join Sheriff Country, CBS’ first new scripted series set for a launch during the 2025-26 season.

The third time at CBS — and fourth time overall — proved to be the charm for mounting an U.S. adaptation of the German procedural Einstein with a pilot order. As Deadline reported exclusively in June, the new take had been heating up at CBS.

In it, brilliant but directionless, the great grandson of Albert Einstein spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor until his bad boy antics...

‘Einstein’ Detective Series In The Works Again At CBS From Andy Breckman, Randy Zisk & Intrigue
Image
Exclusive: CBS is hoping it’s third time is a charm for its take on German procedural Einstein.

The network is developing a new take on the scripted format from Monk pair Andy Breckman and Randy Zisk.

Brilliant but directionless, the great grandson of Albert Einstein spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor until his bad boy antics land him in trouble with the law and he is pressed into service helping a local police detective solve her most puzzling cases.

This is the third attempt at developing the project for CBS. In 2019, Monk creator Breckman and director Zisk developed a version of the show, which ran for three seasons in Germany. The following year, the network teamed with Insatiable creator Lauren Gussis and American Gothic creator Corinne Brinkerhoff for a gender-swapped version of the show that added a new perspective on policing, in the wake of the killing of George Floyd.

‘Einstein’, A Gender-Swapped & Timely Take On German Police Series, In Works At CBS From Lauren Gussis & Corinne Brinkerhoff
Image
Exclusive: CBS is taking another shot at adapting the German police procedural dramedy Einstein, this time with major changes to the original concept.

The 2017 German series was a police procedural dramedy about the unknown great-great-grandson of Albert Einstein, a theoretical physics professor, who helps the police in solving murder cases.

The CBS take, written/executive produced by Insatiable creator Lauren Gussis and executive produced by American Gothic creator Corinne Brinkerhoff, centers on a roguish, out-of-the-box-thinking physics professor who happens to be the secret, illegitimate great-granddaughter of Albert Einstein. She begrudgingly partners with a Boston homicide detective not only to help solve the most puzzling of crimes, but also to address the problems ever-present inside the institution of policing itself.

In addition to switching the gender of the Einstein great-grandchild title character, the adaptation also provides 2020 perspective on policing, which has come under major scrutiny following the death of George Floyd.

Warner Independent Looks to Bring 'Dorks' Back to Life
  • In the tradition of great Hollywood mergers, Warner Independent Pictures has announced the tapping of Chris Bishop to scribe what is being described as Revenge of the Nerds meets Shaun of the Dead, in a retelling of the 2004 German flick Night of the Living Dorks. The original, penned and helmed by Mathias Dinter, gained a cult following when it made it across the Atlantic in 2006. The plot focuses on three not-so-cool school friends, Phillip, Konrad and Weener, who decide to try an old voodoo ritual. Later, they die in a car accident, but live on as zombies. They soon learn that being zombies may be their ticket to popularity, or at least sex with girls. The project will be produced for Wip by Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Doug Davison. Adam Goldberg, known for bringing geek comedies to the screen, has also signed onto the project. Goldberg’s writing
