Austrian-German production company Schubert is moving forward with a slate of films by distinctive auteur filmmakers, among them the historical drama “Rose,” by Austrian writer-director Markus Schleinzer and starring Sandra Hüller (“The Zone of Interest”).
Founded by Johannes Schubert in 2020, the Vienna and Berlin-based company partnered with Row Pictures in Leipzig and Munich’s Walker + Worm Film on “Rose,” Schleinzer’s third feature, which follows a 17th-century woman who, disguised as a man, begins a new life in a protestant village at the end of the Thirty Years’ War. Repped internationally by The Match Factory and currently in advanced post-production, the Austrian-German co-production is set for release this year.
Also in the works is the upcoming feature debut “Keep Quiet” by Franz Böhm, who just picked up a BAFTA for his short “Rock, Paper, Scissors.” Marking their second collaboration after the Hot Docs breakthrough “Dear Future Children,” the English-language political thriller,...

“We are on the way up,” a bullish Sandra den Hamer says of prospects for the Dutch film sector for 2025 and beyond. The chief executive office of the Netherlands Film Fund believes that the local film industry is at last moving forward after several difficult years in the wake of Covid, falling market share for local movies and the near invisibility of Dutch cinema at major international festivals.
Dutch films are performing better than many anticipated in 2024, growing market share to 17% from 14% the previous year. Comedy drama Loverboy: Emotions Off was the top performing local title with revenues of $4.5mn driven largely by younger cinemagoers.

The Netherlands has selected its acclaimed Dutch drama film, ‘Sweet Dreams’ by director Ena Sendijarevic, as its official entry, in the International Feature category for the 96th Academy Awards, in 2024. The film had its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival in August, winning the film’s actress Renee Soutendijk a best performance award. In addition, ‘Sweet Dreams’ is also set to get its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, according to Hollywood Reporter.
According to the film’s description, ‘Sweet Dreams’ is a dark humour based satire which is very ‘unforgiving’ in its take on European colonialism, showcasing how the lavish aesthetics and majestic lifestyle of colonial Europe soon came to a bitter end, and how its power and standard was reduced.
The synopsis reads: “On an Indonesian island, 1900, Dutch sugar plantation owner Jan and his wife, Agathe, are at the top of the food chain.

Speaking in Rotterdam, Netherlands Film Fund director Doreen Boonekamp has delivered an upbeat assessment of the state of the Dutch film industry.
Boonekamp has also revealed details of how the country’s new cash rebate system, introduced last year, is driving up production levels.
Some €78m was spent on Dutch production last year, a considerable hike on production investment in 2013, which was around €14m less.
Boonekamp said, as a result of the new incentive, “a lot of post production work is going back to the Netherlands”.
The incentive offers a cash rebate of 30% on the eligible Dutch spend.
Since the incentive was launched in June 2014, 51 film projects have received a total of €13.6m from the scheme.
These have included high profile projects such as Mike van Diem’s De Surprise, Alex van Warmerdam’s Schneider vs. Bax, Polish feature Math Sucks, Austrian movie The Night Of A Thousand Hours, and Roel Reiné’s epic seafaring yarn Michiel de Ruyter...

Former Oscar winner Mike van Diem’s The Surprise and BBC backed series The White Queen [pictured] are among the recipients in the first funding round from the new Screen Flanders economic fund.
A total amount of €4,995,000 ($6,678,685) is to be distributed in the fund’s inaugural call.
The next call for projects closes on 28 June. The final call for 2013 opens from Sept 1 and closes on Oct 25. Another €5 million will be divided among applicants in both remaining calls.
Sitting alongside the Belgian Tax Shelter, the new fund is bound to boost the region’s appeal for coproduction and inward investment yet further. The aim of the selective system is to support (co-) productions that are made, in part or entirely, in the Flanders region. One of the conditions is that the project spends a minimum of €250,000 ($334,205) in the region. The 20 supported titles together stand for well over €20 million ($26,7m)of audiovisual expenses in the Flanders region.
