Just before Austin took the ring and pinned Roberts, he was tipped about the promo’s contents.

Former pro wrestler Mike Jones of WWE and WCW fame has passed away.

Mike Jones, best known to wrestling fans for his run as Virgil in WWE (then WWF), died on Wednesday, per WrestleZone. The wrestler had recently been hospitalized amid ongoing health issues following a dementia diagnosis in 2022. He'd also suffered two minor strokes, and a social media post in 2022 stated he had stage 2 colon cancer. Jones was 61 years old.

“My dear friends, it is with great sorrow that I bring news from the Jones family of the passing of our beloved Michael Jones, whom we know and loved as Virgil, Vincent, Soul Train Jones and more,” pro wrestling referee Mark Charles III said of the news when announcing Jones' death on social media. “Virgil passed peacefully at the hospital this morning and I ask that you pray for him and for his family. In the fictional world of pro wrestling, drawing #30 might be portrayed as a random bit of luck, but there's reasoning for that spot.

WWE’s Royal Rumble works because of its controlled chaos. The story of the match is that anyone can win, but luck creates a massive handicap. If it wasn’t pre-determined, we’d see an awful lot more winners from the #30 spot. I mean, ever watch a Cpu simulated version of a Rumble in a video game? There’s like a 2/5 chance of that last entrant winning.

Now, I’ve been opinionated here lately, but I haven’t compiled any sort of list, and we all like a list, don’t we? So, I figured I’d create a list that is purely my opinion but, from knowing how many people in and out of wrestling feel, it will be a series of opinions shared by many too. We can all shoot the breeze and throw around who we think are the best at something, and it’s all just opinion. We all have different views on what makes the best, what we feel are the best. Every Royal Rumble has to start with someone and these pairs of competitors tend to have some meaning behind their appearances.

One of the things that makes the Royal Rumble so great is the illusion that everything is random. When the countdown ends, we don’t truly know who is going to run out most of the time. The full roster is a mystery, as is its order. But only in storyline. After all, wrestling is predetermined, so all of this is planned and written. That’s why the last five or six spots are usually the heavy hitters.

The #30 spot tends to be pretty straightforward. Outside of the three times when it’s gone to the winner, the final entrant is usually a specific kind of wrestler who is supposed to come off as high-level and threatening, but one that we know has zero real chance winning the match.

The pro wrestling world is in mourning today after the loss of one of sports entertainment's most colorful and iconic managers and entertainers. Bobby Heenan, a.k.a. "The Brain," passed away at age 73. While no cause of death was announced, the famous loudmouth manager had been in poor health for years, after he was diagnosed with throat cancer back in 2002. Wrestlemania 17, hands down, is the best Wrestlemania booked to date. Apart from a horribly short Women’s Championship match with Chyna facing off against Ivory, from the opening match to the main event, every match was great.

The world of sports entertainment is in mourning today, as it was confirmed this morning that legendary WWE Superstar George 'The Animal' Steele, a.k.a. William James Myers, has passed away at the age of 79. The pro wrestler's death was confirmed by his wife Patricia, who revealed that he passed from kidney failure last night in Florida. The wrestling legend had been in and out of hospice care since April.

The professional wrestling world is in mourning today, after news broke last night that Joanie Laurer, best known as WWE Superstar Chyna, passed away at the age of 45. We showed you a number of social media posts that came in last night, from pro wrestlers past and present, paying tribute to this squared circle icon. One of the best heavyweights of his or any generation, the double-tough Georgian had two stints with the company that produced tremendous results. As the former prison guard out of Cobb County, Georgia, he first established himself as a hated heel, determined to put Hulk Hogan down and out of professional wrestling.

Over time, though, he showed great respect and dignity, doing the right thing during a program involving Jake Roberts and Ted Dibiase and turning babyface in the process. It was in that role that he is most remembered, an upper midcard performer who mixed it up with main event talent on occasion but could always be trusted to carry any program handed down to him by management.

David Sinnott

For the past few years, documentary filmmaker David Sinnott has been shoot-interviewing wrestlers and professional fighters, compiling material for his documentary, Nine Legends. It’s a true Mount Rushmore of fighters as well, more than delivering on the ‘Legend’ promise of the title.

The full list of those interviewed by Sinnott for the project are: Goldberg, Bret Hart, The Dynamite Kid, Rob Van Dam, Mike Tyson, Randy Couture, Lita, Ted Dibiase and Chris Jericho. Quite the range of stars, I’m sure you’ll agre.

Fans of wrestling docs may already recognise Sinnott’s name from his acclaimed 2009 effort, Bloodstained Memoirs, which followed a similar template, interviewing another 9 stars, including the likes of Ultimo Dragon, Mick Foley, The Great Muta, Roddy Piper and others.

In Nine Legends, the film hangs on a fictional narrative of an elderly Sinnott, in the year 2050, recounting the stories of his interviews to his grandson.
